Tsaukpaetra explores his newfound power of Discourse

Well I'll be damned...
Alright, let's explore the magical land of CDCK as an Admin while it still lasts.
Of course, to those in the future, I'm referring to the site I set up in only twice the time promised by Discourse itself:
Join me, as I set upon this magical journey!
-
first on the playground: apparently you can change the timestamps of an entire topic (for some reason). At least, that's what I've assumed, can't actually do it because the calendar widget won't go away...

Discourse admins can change the time/date that posts say they were posted on?
"Your honor, as you can see, my client couldn't have killed that man; his Discourse post history clearly indicates that he was posting at the time when the crime occurred, and the post IPs indicate that he was at his home computer when posting them."
-
@anotherusername It’s not like a site admin in desperate need of an alibi couldn’t do that by changing the database directly anyway.
-
@gurth a site admin, sure... forum mods shouldn't necessary have direct access to the database though.
The example was kind of stupid and contrived... that the timestamp on your post can be edited by a mod, though, is really bizarre.
-
@gurth said in Tsaukpaetra explores his newfound power of Discourse:
changing the database
Most of the site admins I know wouldn't know how to do that anyways, much less make it automatically consistent throughout the thread at the clock of a tick.
-
@tsaukpaetra said in Tsaukpaetra explores his newfound power of Discourse:
automatically consistent throughout the thread
That wouldn't really be necessary. They don't all have to be adjusted by exactly the same amount; as long as they stay in the correct order, and the timestamps don't look suspiciously fake (e.g. all at :00.000 seconds), there wouldn't be anything to indicate that they had been tampered with.

Despite having had to rebuild the App several times during install, apparently I need to rebuild it again because not everything was installed. Or something.

So what niche does your site fill that WTDWTF does not? Well, WTDWTF denizens can go over and complain about Discourse, which they can no longer do here.
I propose you go there and upvote all of @Tsaukpaetra's posts. Should be easier to do than here.

True, I have over 24 thousand posts here, not even double-digits on there...
Edit : fat fingered

Makes perfect sense. If your server had the wrong time, then your posts all have the wrong time too. Good thing there's a way to correct that.

Just in one topic?
-
@anotherusername Shockingly enough, topics occasionally get created.
-
@pie_flavor If the server has the wrong time, all of the posts in all of the topics will be wrong, so why would it be a per-thread fix?
Anyway the server having the wrong time isn't something that should ever happen, and if it does, the posts having the wrong time isn't probably something that you should fix -- unless it's something like a wrong time zone, in which case adjusting all of them by a number of hours might be appropriate. But doing it thread by thread would still be tedious and dumb.
-
@anotherusername So you're saying there isn't a way to do that for all posts after a certain date?
-
@pie_flavor said in Tsaukpaetra explores his newfound power of Discourse:
@anotherusername So you're saying there isn't a way to do that for all posts after a certain date?
Not so far as I've found. And even then, that criteria gets in the way of if the forum was available with the correct time for any amount of time where people posted at that point or afterward.
-
@pie_flavor said in Tsaukpaetra explores his newfound power of Discourse:

From the screenshot he posted, just for a whole thread. Which ... really doesn't make a lot of sense.
-
- Jeff post out (or create new thread with your new post)
- Edit the timestamps on the one-post thread
- Jeff it in
- ???
502 OK
-
@pie_flavor Side note, I went ahead and installed NodeBB too:
https://nodebb.tsaukpaetra.com
Took like five minutes, and about twenty minutes figuring out how to do letsencrypt on a fresh server (apparently certbot hasn't been updated properly for some reason). Though, not sure if emails are actually going out like so..
See if the wackiness you see here happens there, yeah?
Edit: nvm, I seem to have borked t... :(

Next you'll suggest that writing objects directly into the database is the tried-and-true method of posting to topics...

Yes. As a joke based on a User Friendly cartoon, but yes.

sadly, I've run out of monies and so had to choose between one or the other.
(un?)fortunately, the discourse one ended up being the one that got shot.

It's , so they are indeed to be pitied. OTOH, they did it to themselves, they deserve it.
