The one where @Captain figures out how to use VAMT
-
Trying to set up VAMT in proxy mode, so that my MAK keys can be re-used. The idea is that VAMT does the activation on the client's behalf -- the key gets used up, but VAMT keeps credentials around and is authorized by M$ to activate that machine again and again.
OK this is already 100% more annoying than I expected. On the first run of the Volume Activation Tools wizard (Windows Server 2012 R2), it asks me to pick between Active Directory and KMS-based activations. Either way I need a KMS host key.
I don't have a KMS host key. I have 50 MAK keys for Windows 7, 50 MAK keys for Windows 8, and 50 MAK keys for Windows 10.

@captain found this post
by some other sucker reading the same instructions as him. Now @captain needs to install the Windows ADK and a SQL server. And make tables and stuff.
-
@captain does a face palm since the
That handy looking link to the logs doesn't actually contain a log for MS SQL Server Express 2012.
-
@captain Just contact your system administrator
-
@captain judiciously probes the Googles for solutions until he finds that SQL Server 2012 Express won't install on a domain controller.
That explains things, kind of. I mean, why shouldn't private identity management stuff all live on the same server? Why not just throw VAMT on the file server? WHY NOT?
So @captain RDPs onto the file server and runs the
adksetup.exe
.Interestingly enough, Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express gets stuck at 60% again. @captain wonders if maybe the problem is Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express.
While @captain ponders fixing his server with a pickaxe, the installer finishes.

The question is: why didn't the installer say so, instead of "I failed but won't tell you why"
-
@captain hears voices and replies "That would make too much sense."
-
Silly question, but with >1K licenses, why not KMS????

I mean that I have one MAK key for each product with 50 activations. Actually, the number of activations got bumped up. We have 50 or so licenses for each product.

OK... combine that with a misread on my part, mentally concatenating the "7" from "Window 7" with the immediately following "50"...
Yeah... raw VAMT is a roaring pain....

I think this is all worked out. At least the VAMT part. I'm not a fan of registry hacks to get sysprep.exe to work.
