North Korea to join Olympics in South Korea
-
I'm speechless. This is absolutely the very last thing I've expected to happen, if not at all, then at least in this decade. I'd say this is the biggest news since WTC attack.
-
@gąska Whichever site's reporting this is late to the party; people have been talking about it since last week.
I agree that this is kind of a big deal, though. If things go well, it might do a lot to help repair the Olympics' reputation.
-
@masonwheeler That's right, we want to improve the reputation of people doing pointless things for nothing but acclaim by letting in the brainwashed minions of the most evil nation on earth.

Talking about upcoming talks. This is about the results of those talks. The symbolism of NK competing in SK is huge.

Well, we'd really like to lower tensions on the peninsula and this seems like the sort of thing that leads to and is actually a result of that.
-
@boomzilla No, I have no problem with it in that sense. Just in the sense that this will benefit the 'reputation' of the olympics.
-
@gąska It's kind of a big deal, but also:
- The Olympics are supposed to be some kind of international good will event
- North Korea has participated in many winter Olympics in the past (2006 and 2010 most recently)
- South Korea would really look like an ass is they didn't let the north compete
I'm guessing the meeting was mostly a formality.
-
@blakeyrat then why did it happen now, a month before the event, and not, say, any time between now and 2011 when South Korea was selected as an organizer?
-
@gąska Procrastination. High tempers making face-to-face meetings difficult. Etc.
-
@blakeyrat I'd rather believe it's a sign of the upcoming change in relations between NK and the rest of the world that will steer us away from a nuclear war.

Now we just need Oprah to replace Trump and we're golden.
-
@zecc "You get deported! And you get deported! And YOU get deported!"
-
As long as NK doesn't lose badly to SK and nuke them in retaliation

That’s why they’re also sending a tae kwon do “demonstration team” with a winter sports delegation.
-
Just have to hope that NK athletes don't try to defect. That will just reverse all the good will this may bring about.

NK tends to keep the families close at hand (and within NK) when athletes (and others) leave the country.... It is their "incentive plan" to encourage returning.

It was never near a nuclear war. Kim needs to look like he is crazy enough to attack for it to work as a deterrent, but everybody knows that it's never gonna happen. Nobody is going to risk it, but nobody expects it to happen.
-
@sockpuppet7 even if the risk of war was always zero, I hope people will finally stop talking about it as real thing. Also, more open NK might make the lives of NKeans better.

I'm not sure what could make their lives worse (sadly)....

It probably would, but it would most likely make the life of one particular group of North Koreans worse in the long run, and that’s why it’s rather unlikely to happen.

@gąska
CNN reports as: Trump forces NK to use ROK athletes as human shields during Olympics.
