I clicked a topic in the forum (Hello!), and it asked me to log in. After I did, it informed me the topic doesn't exist.
WhyTF does the "topic doesn't exist" page require login??

Maybe it was Schrödinger’s thread, and by trying to observe it you caused it to change state and disappear from this universe.

That thread was deleted on account of being spam, and I can only assume that it was still listed just as it was being deleted, then gone just before you clicked it.

The forum you requested does not exist.

Maybe it wasn't deleted, but was moved to a hidden section. Which is why it required log-in. As well as why it says "The forum you requested does not exist" rather than "The topic you requested does not exist"

Entirely true. But for most people the two are indistingushable. If you can't see it when logged in, it's irrelevant whether it's been deleted or moved to where you can't see it.

You need to log in to most sites if they have a hidden part. Having logged in, whether you have permission to view said hidden part or not is what's causing the problem here.
It was a 'removed' post, attempting to be viewed by an anonymous user. To view it, the system needs to find out if you actually have permission to view it. So the login screen comes up. If you can view the graveyard you can see the post, if you can't view the graveyard, you get....

.... one of Community Server's foibles.
It has so many - this isn't one of the serious ones. The time between an anonymous user noticing a spam post and a moderator removing it in the time it takes someone to log in is not a problem. The error message is crap, I agree, but there are more sources of complaint than time windows and subsequent error messages :D

As the current spam count on the forums appears to zero, I wouldn't call it "losing the fight". In every domain, spam remains a problem of mopping with the faucet opened.
Now have a look at NewScientist. Hot damn are they balls-deep in scam-tailer spam comments. It's drowning out the normal comments (which, aside, border on the NS-equivalent of youtube comments nowadays. They even have their own equivalent of SpectateSwamp in the form of a Greek author spewing random quantum ether insanity)

I don't know if the site maintainers are doing
something to combat spam, but if they are, they seem to be losing the fight.
In the case of any message board delivering RSS feeds, there has to be some timescale between a message being posted, and it appearing on the feed.
On an 'unmoderated' message board (such as this, and others I frequent,) spam is likely, and if the message board has fairly active moderators, on the board itself, the spam is likely to be removed quickly.
This becomes the problem of how quickly are moderators likely to squash spam vs how 'new' you want the RSS feed to be (assuming the message board software you're using even gives this as an option.)
This is CS. I'm assuming a choice isn't being given and all posts end up on RSS (or we have insufficient moderators to kill spam within 30 seconds of it appearing.)

When a post (or an entire thread) is deleted, it doesn't simply vanish, but goes into an moderators-only section of the forum. To see it, you need to login (as a mod, obviously).
Unfortunately (TRWTF is CS) the forum's front page is not refreshed too often, so a deleted thread is often still shown for minutes after deletion.
