Russell's paradox strikes again

  • My Battlefield 2 got a bit confused one day. If the members of the squad are precisely those individuals who are not members of the squad, then everyone must both be a member and not a member. Somehow the squad still managed to list exactly seven members. The upper limit the game allows is six.

Yes, I know it's not exactly Russell's paradox, you don't have to yell at me.

More importantly, what the fuck kind of nazi-assed server admin do you have to be to both outlaw attacks on the aircraft carrier *AND* misspell it in the process?

If a team is so bad they lose foothold on the carrier, they DESERVE to be owned like that.

  • Pretty much every servers sucks for at least one reason. Sometimes you'll do desperate things.

    \begin{rant}

The top 5 ways ruin the game:

    1. Horribly imbalanced map (team positions, AA vs Aircraft, ...)
    2. Infantry only
    3. Four star generals vs sergeants
    4. Hackers (although it is always fun to kill one of those)
    5. Stupid rules ("spec ops in enemy base must not shoot first","only spec ops in the enemy base","commander must not use arty/scan/uav", ...)

    \end{rant}

Let's see if I understand this.  You have a game where you are trying to FUCKING KILL PEOPLE but you will get kicked/banned FOR BAD LANGUAGE, not to mention doing things to actually FUCKING KILL PEOPLE , like destroying vehicles and using C4.

Wow.  That makes my head hurt.

  • First, given BF2's bugginess I'm not surpised in the slightest.

Second, (for those that mentioned it) there need to be stupid rules to give the game some balance. Anyone that's played it knows 90% of the players are uncoordinated, underage rambo-wannabe cannon-fodder. Add to that the team autobalance that keeps placing you in the retard team and it can be a real pain in the butt to take part in a good game.

Third, are you still playing that? After a few months it turns into an endless recursion of time and that game's been out for years.

Fourth, if there was an invisible sniper taking potshots at you at the tv station on Sharqi peninsula that was me.

    You'll never find me.

No, a stupid rule is stupid.  This is what turned me off to these games a long time ago.

If the game allows it, what's the problem?  Some server admin somewhere is creating rules that don't  allow things that the game's developers deliberately put in the game?  How absurd is that?  What, it isn't "fair"?  Well boo-freakin-hoo.  Get over it already.

  • ditch BF2 and start playing realitymod.com

I'm quite sure CS doesn't support ΤΕΧ syntax. That would be TRWTF.

Also, would you have noticed that I used upper case tau, epsilon and chi to write ΤΕΧ?

The bad language rule I can understand - after all, these are 12 year olds we're talking about and the last thing anyone who ISN'T twelve wants is a bunch of kids whose voices haven't broken screaming "FUCK U NIGGER" over the voice channel constantly. At least if you take away their FUCK and NIGGER, then you don't have to hear their squeaky voices at all (unless they've discovered FAGGOT)

The actual gameplay rules? Fuck that shit. Shit like that is why I haven't played on a public server since Tribes 2 was out. Singleplayer only and the occasional "Let's see if this has any multiplayer game modes that are intellectually intriguing" (protip: The answer to that question is always NO) match with 2 or 3 buddies.

Because, er, while playing a shooter, one is not actually killing people, but reducing to zero a value aspect of a symbolic representation in computer memory, and one is being actually immature by actually insulting people with one's actual lack of emotional self-control*.

One day, when I have enough free time, I will introduce you to the concepts of make-belief and fantasy, and how they are distinct from reality.

Poor game design/balancing. The developers aren't perfect, you know.

Plenty of MW2 players calling for dedicated servers a la CoD4 so that they can disagree with the game designers about what makes it fun and what doesn't. The CoD4 designers thought it would be fun if everyone around you dropped live frag grenades when they died. They had a minority opinion there...

It just means you have to keep your teabagging sessions really short.

You'd be surprised how many servers for violent games are run by, apparently, conservative Christians.

I frequently got kicked when playing Battlefield 2142 for saying such foul language such as "damn!" or "WTF!" (Not spelling it out, actually typing WTF.) Same applies to America's Army, which has ragdoll corpse physics so accurate that I've gotten physically ill watching it.

One of the more insane and bizarre things about PC gaming online.

  •  I got stuck in a squad on Battlefield 2142. My client told me I was in it, but the server said I wasn't. I figured I'd just wait for the next game and it would fix itself. It didn't. I was still in the squad, but in this game the squad didn't even exist.

I had another player create the squad and try to kick me from it. No dice, it said I wasn't in it. So I figured maybe he could invite me into it and then kick me. No dice, it said I was already in it. So I both wasn't in it and was already in it, so could neither be invited nor kicked.

    Yay.

That blew my mind the first time I saw it. America's Army claims it "provides players with the most authentic military experience available." I especially love the MOS list. I can't wait for them to offer 57E and  21L.

Sheesh, what's the point of playing then?
