What's good ram for me?

I'm looking for at least 16 gig. 32 gig would be nice, but $300 is a little much. I'm thinking doubling my memory would be good, since running a game and chrome at the same time maxes me out right now, which of course puts pressure on the harddrive.

What's the model number on your CPU? My answer might change a little depending on the processor model, but in general it looks like the Skylake line processors prefer DDR4-2133 dual channel.So you would be looking for something like this: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233771
Judging by the CAS latency timings on that stick, it "should" be a match for your existing stick. Personally, I've always preferred to install memory in matched pairs - same vendor, same lot, same everything - so I would plan to buy 2 new 8GB sticks and replace the existing stick. But that's probably largely cargo cultism on my part from some point in the past where I mixed and matched memory and hit two different types that didn't match CAS latencies; I would expect there's a 99%+ chance you would be fine just adding 1 of those 8GB sticks to your existing RAM.

and yeah the one you link is pretty good and looks like a match. there's no guarantee your motherboard will do proper dual channel with it because mismatched sticks are never guaranteed to do that, but it looks like a close enough match that baring braindead UEFI or some fault in either ram stick it should work.
worth a shot anyway. :-)

i trust the brand significantly more than gskill, so i'd go for it, yeah. but gskill is a well known brand so while they're not upscale like corsair they're not chinesium bullshit either.

better perf would be to put them in A1 and B1 but.... /shrug/

From a performance standpoint, 2x8GB > 1x16GB. Though probably not overwhelmingly so... but Intel's spec documents all recommend going with the multi-channel RAM configuration rather than single channel of the same total size.

Except when later comes, you won't be able to get the same lot, and you'll be back into the same "do I mix sticks" debate. And/or later will be late enough that your CPU/Mobo is 3+ generations old and you'll be contemplating replacing the whole thing, which will use a newer RAM tech.

get 1x16 if you plan on adding a second 1x16 in the next three months sure, otherwise either find a 1x8 that matches your CAS timings and clock speed (cpuZ is your friend) and add that, or get 2x8 matched.
i'd say get the 1x8 with matched timings and speed because it's cheaper and your mobo will accept it 99.92% of the time, so why waste money? :-)

it'll work. but unless your motherboard has the XMP profile for the ram (or you fiddle with it yourself) it'll run at 2133MHz. also you would have a hard time noticing the speed improvement from 2133 to 3000 so i'd drop down to 2133 and use the savings to get more RAM or an SSD upgrade or something. :-D
but that's actually a decent choice, so don't return it if you're happy with it. we're talking the difference here between an A and an A+, both show up on your report card as a 4.0 GPA.

It will function. You’re kind of wasting money if the 3000MHz memory clock came at a premium over 2133MHz, since the communication speed of the CPU to RAM will bottleneck at 2133. But from a technical perspective the faster RAM will downstep just fine.

The difference is marginal in most cases. You should get whichever is cheaper at the moment - unlikely you're going to expand RAM of the same computer twice in its lifetime.

Holy shit, I thought I bricked my PC.
I pulled the RAM out, put the new one in and it wouldn't boot up. I put the old RAM in, and it still wouldn't boot up. Then I realized I wasn't pushing it all the way in. I'm totally not a hardware guy.... nope.... nope nope nope nope.
Well, thanks for the help guys. I got it up now. 16 gigs feels a lot fresher. Less harddrive use, more breathing room. So much better.

I switched out the RAM and it's solved all the problems I was having.
