My understanding of what happened is that FASA had licensed the rights for several designs from a company in the US, Twentieth Century Imports, that claimed to have the rights to distribute and promote several anime series, only to find out years later that TCI had lied about it when Harmony Gold and Bandai sued TCI and named FASA as a co-defendant.
FASA, aware of their miniscule weight compared to HG and Bandai, basically did everything they could to make peace, but TCI fought it out to the bitter end while trying to drag everyone they had burned down with them. As soon as TCI went under, FASA rolled over and agreed to stop using the artwork for those designs (which they'd already done even before all this happened, as they wanted to focus on the new Clan designs) and de-emphasize them in the novels and other products.

@Erufael Put small lasers in the arms to fit 2 more heatsinks. Seems to be working well so far. Only one game where I didn't do over 400 damage, and that was cuz I was an idiot and got myself killed early. Unloading 6 SRM-6's into the face of a bad guy is pretty damn rewarding!
-
Trying out a crabby:
This loadout:
So far has been an utter failure. :(
Gonna try dualie AC/20 and see what else it'll fit.

What was bad about it? From a glance it seems like it would be a little light on ammo.
-
@Erufael XL engine attracts hits like a magnet, and losing an arm caused an ammo explosion that'd wipe out the rest of the mech. My first round with it, I wiped out a Kodiak, but the thing's surprisingly just too delicate. Here's the new build:
-
@blakeyrat That one seems a little better. Heavy hitting, with ammo and CASE. Hope it works!
-
@Erufael HOLY SHIT 2 AC/20 hit HARD. Two hits with that took out a Dire Wolf, and a third hit took the arm off a Stalker.
Problem is: fucking hot. I can't afford double heat sinks at the mo because buying the mech drained me.
-
Giving an XL another try... had one in my inventory.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah... If we ever meet on the field of battle, I dearly hope that we're on the same team if you're driving that thing. lol. I don't wanna get in front of it!
-
@Erufael The XL engine's still too delicate. Ugh.
I need to save up money. Gonna play the heavies I'm actually good at playing for awhile.
-
"Working from home" and wanting to finish up my pilot challenges.
Matchmaking takes forever at 9:14 AM. Doing some Misery rounds, maybe I can get on the Stalker assault table, being the only assault that I both own and are good at.
-
@blakeyrat Aaaaand... got instantly nuked.
-
@blakeyrat Wellll, shit. Guess I'll play around with my new toy. Did I mention that launching 6 SRM-6's at a bad guy is very satisfying? hehe
-
@blakeyrat Fuck, instantly nuked again. WTF is wrong with these teams. "Oh a mech is narced, let's all go chasing him ignoring the fact that the narced mech is like 20 miles away from the rest of the enemy team and the objecive!"
-
@blakeyrat AND AGAIN!
I just played a round as a Misery and did less than 50 damage. They got a LRM lock on me and apparently nobody on my team had AMS or ECM or was FUCKING PAYING ATTENTION WHATSOEVER.
-
@blakeyrat I hate when streaks like this happen. :/
-
@Erufael I just suck in assaults and shouldn't even try to pilot them, that's really what's happening.
-
@blakeyrat Ahh. That would make a difference. Heavy's are just right for me, personally.
-
@Erufael Me too.
Ok that round I did 364 damage.
People keep picking the huge flat snow map and I have ZERO LRM defense.

Ugh. I know the feeling.
-
Currently working on upgrading my regular SRMs to SRMs with Artemis.
-
@Erufael I really hate how Artemis versions are different pieces of equipment you have to re-buy. The ammo maybe, but why the launchers?
-
@blakeyrat Yeah its a massive pain in the ass. I also have to dump most of my heatsinks to fit them, since they're a full ton heavier. Each.
-
@Erufael Ok well I got a couple good rounds in, time to download No Man's Sky. Which is a game made by assholes who didn't offer a pre-download on Steam.
-
@blakeyrat lol Well, have fun!
-
About to start my 6th match on HPG Manifold. In a row. What is with today with this map!?
-
I just created an account (pilot name "A Nonny Mouse") and have started in with the Academy stuff.
I've been watching MoltenMetal on youtube, and reacquired the MW bug from him.
I played MW2 a lot when I was younger, and laying around somewhere I have MW4 and MechCommander 2, which I've played a little bit.
-
@djls45 Sadly I think the playerbase has dwindled a lot due to their stupid and botched skilltree system.
Although starting an account from scratch might be the only case in which the skilltree's lack of any kind of assistive technology wouldn't annoy you as much. For us experienced player, the skilltree makes your mech almost useless until you spent 15-20 minutes leveling it up... for every mech (I have 40, to give you an idea.) And no, there's no way to copy-and-paste skilltrees or create a template and apply it to the mech, or even automating the conversion of legacy skillpoints to new skilltree points.
And none of that will ever get fixed now that Pirahna is spending like 90% of their development resources on Mechwarrior V.

I just don't know why my camouflage doesn't seem to be working well...
-
@blakeyrat Hmm hard to say... :P
-
@blakeyrat That almost looks like you tried to do Dazzle Camo in the ugliest color pattern imaginable... :o
-
@masonwheeler That literally is MechWarrior's idea of dazzle, with the ugliest color pattern imaginable. (Brighest purple available + brightest orange available).
It looks better on Catapults.
-
@masonwheeler Here's it with some more traditional color choices:
-
And 772 damage in that bad boy. Fuck yeah Stalkers.
-
@blakeyrat Damn, nice! What are you packing on that thing?
-
@erufael LARGE LASERS UP THE ASS.
2x Large Laser and 2x ER Large Laser in the ears (positioned so the ER's are on top, if I did it right)
2x Large Laser on the nose3 weapons groups, with 2 lasers each. You'd be surprised how much firepower a Stalker can put out without overheating. On ice maps, I can fire 12-14 lasers before needing to take a break. (Basically the only good thing about that shitty chassis.)
The ear lasers are great for "hill peeking", another thing the Stalker is really good at. (If you can see a target from the cockpit, you can hit it with all the weapons in your ears. The lasers on the nose... not so much.) The other nice thing about "peeking" is since you're only firing 4 lasers, you can go a lot longer without overheating.
One of the reasons I like the Stalker and Catapult so much is they put most of their weapon-load higher than the cockpit.

BattleTech has a long history of odd camouflage schemes. I own a copy of this:

(Bloody hell, they charge US$95 for it!)
and it includes plenty of schemes that make you think, βWTF?β

@gurth My favorite in the video game (I don't do the table top games at all) is the... I think the Clan Wolf signature camo? You can only get it on Clan mechs. It looks like a highly varnished coppery-colored wood, the reflections on it are amazing, and MWO lets you change the color if you don't like the copper-y color.
Here's someone who tinted theirs green and orange:
The problem with Clan mechs is that a lot of them have a LOT of boring black plastic panels on the outside which makes your paint job a lot less impactful. Generally speaking, except for the cockpit, almost 100% of the surface of a IS mech is paint-able, while Clan mechs have huge portions that are always boring black.
-
@blakeyrat I'm just glad they're dark grey/black instead of something lighter. That would make it suck even more.
-
@erufael It depends on the mech too. Ebon Jag, my favorite Clan mech (because it's the closest in size and capability to the Catapult) is like 50% covered in un-paint-able panels. So irritating. And it's weird curved shape ensures decals won't work very well, either.
-
Built this beautiful little Raven tonight:
Never tried MRMs before, how do they work?
HOLY SHIT THEY ROCK.
I'm firing 20 of them in a volley, and if you think about it that's the same amount of damage as an AC/20 in like half the weight-- added bonus I can load 600 missile ammo (30 shots) in 2 tons, where 2 tons of AC/20 ammo is only 14 rounds. I crammed stealth armor on it too so it's basically invisible.

I suspect they sexed things up a lot for the video games. Itβs been a long time since I was deeply into BattleTech, but as I recall Clan Wolfβs basic scheme was mainly grey (back in the day, anyway).
Here's someone who tinted theirs green and orange:
At least it makes people recognise you easily β¦
-
@blakeyrat Oh damn, nice! I haven't played in a while. I should again.
-
@erufael I get excited about this game, then I'm like "oh I have a great new idea for a build for (Mech chassis!)" then I click into the MechLab and there's this horrible huge empty skill tree waiting for me and that's when I lose all interest in MWO forever.
That skill tree is a fucking albatross. In the old system, you could level up any mech to max performance in like 9 clicks-- in the new system you at minimum need 92 clicks. (91 skills + save.) Making it even worse: the skill trees of most of my mechs are identical, but there's no way to copy-and-paste them, or create a template and apply it. Fucking terrible system.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah, that thing is super bizarre, I agree fully.
-
@erufael I challenge Piranha to point out a single user who gives a shit about balancing a 0.4% increase in heat dispersion against a 0.25% increase in laser range.
The weapon tree has a couple good skills in it (like an extra ammo for each ton of ammo, awesome for AC/20 mechs) but you have to make about 37 shitty pointless decisions to even GET there.
-
@blakeyrat And to add to it, it's all the same as far as i can tell for each 'Mech, so there's nothing that really stands out.
-
@erufael Right; once you come up with a build there's only really a few variants:
Jump-jets vs. none (on chassis)
Energy, Ballistic, or Missile weapon typeThat's all. So you could build 6 skilltrees and just copy and paste them everywhere. If you want to get REALLY slick you could add a "short range, long range" to that.
Frankly I leave the Jump Jet tree blank even on mechs that have jump jets because I'm too fucking lazy.

I just finished my first three Quick Play matches.
First was Domination with a Trial Adder on Polar Highlands (the big wide-open snow map).
Second was Domination with a Trial Raven on Polar Highlands.
Third was Incursion with a Trial Raven on Grim Plexus.I died all three times, and I never broke 100 damage, but we won the first one! The 2nd and 3rd were losses, though.
