Amazon Key Flaw Could Let Rogue Deliverymen Disable Your Camera

Who could predict that de-auth attacks would prevent communication with remote devices?
-
A device whose only job is security found insecure. What a surprise.
Honestly this isn't even headline worthy. How many of these internet connected devices are actually secure? Definitely less than 50%. Probably closer to 1%.
-
No, this doesn't sound plausible at all. Who would make and sell an Internet of things device without a strong focus on security?
-
@jaloopa they had top men working on security...
-
The whole Amazon Key idea is stupid.
Really? The easiest way to receive a package when you're not home is to install an internet connected lock on your door and give some company control over it?
You'd think by now someone would have invented some kind of locked box where you can just deposit the fucking packages.

i don't know about you but i have them delivered to the office and then drop a wad on some REALLY nice chocoaltes and caramels for the mailroom around the holidays.....
-
This story would've been a lot more exciting if the flaw allowed rouge deliverymen to disable the camera...

Or like fucking Amazon Locker, which has existed for six years.
-
@anotherusername
Great, now those rouge states are sending their deliverymen after us.

Like... a box... for mail...

@captain Yeah but the "mail" in mailbox means letters. So it's pretty hard to fit an Xbox in most of them. What we need is "packageboxes".
Which I'm sure already exist, but I don't think I've ever actually seen one.

I've seen them. It's the same concept, where you and the delivery person are the only people who can open the door, except that the door goes to a box, not your entire house.

a
mailboxUm. My mailbox can't handle a package (slot in door). Regular mailboxes can only handle small packages, but are not locked. Those big communal boxes are locked. But then the package has to go via USPS. So...
(plus USPS gets very bent out of shape if any one other then them uses those boxes)

That.

Appears to be pretty common around here.
Those are the communal things I referred to. They're not at all common - except in new construction.

A stupid idea turned out to be stupid.
I am shocked.

@anonymous234 DHL has something called a "Packstation" here, which is basically like Amazon Locker but from DHL. There's quite a few of them here in Munich, and most of the stuff I order comes via DHl anyway, so I use them a lot.
At my apartment there's just the usual small slots and I don't know any of the neighbours so getting packages delivered there is pretty much impossible.

The real question is why not a single person looked at the idea and went "wait that's a dumb idea don't do it" before they went public with the product.

We've got a whole bunch of them at the local supermarket. I don't know for sure as I've never needed to use it, but I think it might be opened by app so that it is easier to share between many people (though each box would only be used by at most one person's goods at a time).

It’s called “your neighbours.”

My guess is that many persons did, but they were all lower-ranking than who came up with the idea in the first place. Therefore, their objections were either over-ruled or not even heard. Or maybe there were some in the team who actually enjoyed seeing the dumb idea become reality and fail hard.

One just recently got installed in my apartment building, although I don't think any of the compartments are big enough for an Xbox.
