Good product placement, or just extracting the urine?

  •  On today's The Register is this story about how the population of the county of Norfolk can't use Google (for those outside the UK, the place has got a rep for being very in-bred [allegedly]). The banner ad made me smile though:

How to go to google: Easy, type in "G", "o", "o", "g", "l", "e", ".", "c", "o", "m" into your address bar... Do Norfolk residents really need their own personal intern for doing that?! :-)

  • Wow. You learn something new every day.

Norfolk : England :: West Virginia : United States

  • I don't know, if they're really that stupid, they're liable to type in all the quotes, commas and spaces too....

Giving instructions to idiots to get them to do something successfully is harder than it looks.

  • The US may be guilty of many things as a whole, but inbreeding is certainly NOT one of them, especially when you consider the enormous influx of immigrants (both legal and otherwise) to this country over the past 100+ years and the upswell of interracial relationships.

But nice try, you limey idiot.

Why stop at 100?[1] Why not go back futher? When did whites (from UK/Ireland) colonise the americas again? (The legalities and subsequent alleged abuse of which I won't enter into except to mention them here...)

But nice try, you limey idiot.

Ah. Racial abuse. By a (presumed) White left-ponder. Against a (perceived) White right-ponder.

Could someone explain to me the thought processes that go on here?

    Serious Q: Isn't inbreeding a pre-requisite for someone to be called a 'red-neck?'

[1] "What's the difference between 300 years and 300 miles?" springs to mind here. But that too would offend some.

LOL. With it being The Reg, I'd definately be leaning towards product placement :)

  • @PJH said:

Four hundred years ago.  Mass immigration from countries other than the UK or France didn't pick up until the 1840s, though.  His number is accurate enough.

    @PJH said:

Technically it's a slur against a country, not a race.

    @PJH said:

Depends.  The term originates from poor farmers who worked outside all day and developed deep tans on their necks.  It moved from being a derisive slur against the poor lobbed by wealthier urbanites, but eventually came to be associated with someone who is poor, white, rural, likely uneducated and probably racist.  It's one of those terms that has been "taken back" a bit, as some (including increasing numbers of southern blacks) use it to self-identify as rural, working class, family-oriented and religious.

  •  Heh, for me all the Google ads were for (or trips to) Norfolk Island!

    Oh, come now... be fair.

Norfolk : England :: Southern West Virginia : United States

Northern WV sits nicely in the Pittsburgh sphere of influence. It's down south where Jesco White lives...

  • @PJH said:

    Serious Q: Isn't inbreeding a pre-requisite for someone to be called a 'red-neck?'

If I remember my history correctly, 'red-neck' is originally derived from striking Appalachian coal-miners who wore red handkerchiefs around their necks as a sign that they supported unionization. This is, of course, before it became a derogatory term for those on the far left side of the bell curve...

EDIT: crap, here comes the wrath of morbius... I'm out!

  • @jchannell said:

That you can say this unironically is the funniest thing of all.

  • Well... Pittsburgh's a hell of a lot bigger than any other city around. 45 minute drive from where I'm sitting...

  • @jchannell said:

Pittsburgh has a "sphere of influence" much like an old man in a nursing home with a bad colon on Pureed Burrito Night.  As in, if you're close enough to the TV that you can tell which Andy Griffith show you're watching, you clearly have a non-functioning olfactory sense.

  • Better Pittsburgh than Boone County...

As an aside, I spent some time living in the southern part of WV, albeit in a populated area. Huntington is a wretched hellhole at the end of Chemical Valley. I refused to drink the water and felt dirty after every shower...

There's a guy who posts here who lives in Huntington, I believe.  He married his girlfriend because he thought she was pregnant, then it turns out she wasn't.  Toxic chemicals in the water could definitely explain a lot of his behavior...

  • Huntington is the fattest city in America because the water is so bad and everyone drinks gallons of soda pop instead.

  • When I lived there, highlights included:

    • Getting drunk with the mayor when I was 19 at a frat party
    • Witnessing a drive-by shooting
    • being mugged (which was funny, because I turned my pockets out & laughed at the guy - "I have 2 cigarettes and a handshake, buddy - you can have one of my smokes." - he left me alone after that)
    • meeting a 49 year old Vietnam veteran that was drunk, taking Lortabs and high on Morphine, that had 2 wooden legs and called himself "Kickstand" - and racing him across Waterfront Park on foot.
    • 4 out of 5 girls I knew got raped
    • There was about 9 months or so where a lot of the police force was laid off and we only had 18 officers for the entire city, and while the whole place went to shit you could rest assured that there would always be 2 sitting at the gas station across from the college drinking coffee and oogling the college girls.

Yeah, stay the hell away from Huntington WV

I call shenanigans. It's Riverfront Park.

Shenanigans again. The police have never been good at their jobs so its impossible for the city to go downhill after laying them all off.

  • Riverfront... Waterfront... it's been a number of years. :)

One night, me & my friends were at Ritter park, and we heard this shriek - "If you kill me I'ma have to leave my baby!!!" We turn around to see this car shaking back & forth violently & the brake lights going on & off erratically. Then the car peeled out of the parking spot backwards and sped off. Shame, too - I always liked Ritter Park (the whispering wall is really neat).

That's an impressive percentage. Now, assuming it wasn't your doing, did you exclusively hang around with gang-members or is that more or less the standard rate in that area?

Two people, both living in WV, who aren't related by blood?  I call bullshit.

  • Jesus, you guys are a tough crowd.

And yeah, it's my fault this thread got derailed.

Seriously though, West Virginia's not that bad if you're in the North. Morgantown is one hell of a city. The FBI and NASA have offices and buildings all over the place. It's the southern counties (Boone, I'm looking at you) that gives WV a bad name. That, and assholes from VA that can't get over our secession.

  • @bstorer said:

Well, everyone is related by blood, it's just a question of how many generations back you have to go to find the common ancestor.

Of course in some places, you ARE the common ancestor (like WV, Norfolk, and Soviet Russia).

  • @jchannell said:

That, and assholes from VA that can't get over our secession.
I'm not a native Virginian, but I can assure you, absolutely nobody in Virginia gives a shit about West Virginia.  There are two times when West Virginia might be mentioned: 1) as the butt of a standard WV joke, and 2) if someone were discussing slots.  Otherwise, you are well beneath their notice.

  • You're from VA? Hadn't noticed... =D
