Looking for job (USA)

The previous thread got quite bloated, so making a new one (topics are free, after all).
3 years of professional experience with C++, 8 years overall experience. Can also do C#, Java 1.4 through 8, Rust, some Python, JavaScript, Bash, Scala, OCaml, F# and SQL (though TBH I can learn pretty much any language in two weeks, so). Knowledge of agile theology, design patterns and other such bullshit. Preferably in Chicago area, but I can relocate pretty much anywhere in States or work remotely. I have permanent residency.
Anyone heard of anything?

Wanna help me cut down and refactor a few thousand lines of wacky Unreal Engine based game code?
jk, we're currently in hiring freeze looking for funding, but that's what I'll be tackling tomorrow...
-
- Need connection to pass on your resume for interview
- Job sites like Monster
- Insourcing companies may hire you to work remotely
-
I think I mentioned this in the other thread, but PM me if you want me to pass your resume or any cover letters on to my wife for proof reading. She specialises in ESL and doesn't charge a lot, especially for something the size of a resume.
Bad or even non idiomatic grammar can really hurt an application, and it's not easy to spot if you're not a native speaker

Btw, try not to mention in your interviews how much you hate immigrants

Keep that shit in the garage, asshole.

or better yet keep ti to yourself?
wait.... oh. that belongs in the garage too then?
oh........ sorry?

Yeah, that would be really weird, to hate myself...
-
Bump.
-
@gąska I don't have any contacts in the midwest. If you want to know of a quality agency in the Seattle area, I can recommend two.
-
Everyone in the Cleveland area pretty much does contract-to-hire. If you want to move here, try putting resumes with some contract agencies; with your skills, you should find a placement in no time flat. The area's pretty... sparse for good multilingual devs.
-
Bump.

It seems like finding a job is turning out to be kind of a bumpy road for you.
-
@hardwaregeek at least I've got a free trip to SF.
Still no job though.

What have you tried? Who have you talked to? What companies have you applied to, and how did you apply to them? What networking events have you attended?
Getting a job is as much work as having a job. What color is your parachute?
-
@blakeyrat my job hunting capabilities were limited by having a full-time job.
-
@gąska If I can buy a house and interview for a new job in the same month while working 40 hours a week for a ball-busting boss, you can too.
-
@blakeyrat all the events are either at 12PM or 6PM. I worked 11-7 almost every day. But it won't be a problem now - at least until I burn out all my savings.
-
@gąska So don't do events. Hell if you don't start until 11, that gives you perfect coffee-shop time before work.
-
Are you still looking? If so, have you tried Triplebyte?
-
@pie_flavor I decided to go back to Poland. I guess the topic's closed.
I used Triplebyte's services already. They're a very fine company. Got me 2 interviews in SF, and even paid for my flight and hotel.

Knowledge of agile theology
Pretty accurate description. Though I think it only merits the categorization of "theology" when it reaches the scrum stage.
-
@tharpa And then there's SAFe, which is full-out cult status. (Unfortunately, upper management where I work converted last year...)

Their home page says that it's "Lean". I would have assumed that meant it was less cult-like than Scrum, with its 8 hours of meetings a week, formal navel gazing, etc.

There's plenty of meetings per sprint, and once a quarter you get stuck for two whole days in a massive all-staff version of a sprint planning meeting. It's horrible!

So it sounds like the "lean" description is simply false advertising.

The funny thing is I don't even remember writing this, but it's totally something I could've written.

Oh, the irony - I've just got a call from a company I've interviewed with a couple months ago that they might have an offer for me. And I already booked a ticket to Poland for Sunday!

How good is the job offer?
Just because you have the ticket does not mean you have any obligation to fly to Poland on Sunday. I've not taken a flight once before because plans changed.

How good is the job offer?
Not an offer yet, but I expect an average mundane C++ job with an average junior-first-class salary that I would have to move to another city for - and yet I'd be better off financially than I could ever be in Poland. Also, completely avoid the risk of losing green card, and work towards US citizenship.
Alternatively, I can go back to Poland, get a dream job as Rust developer/community organizer (that I've almost secured) in my hometown where all my friends are, live in the apartment my parents own, finish my degree, and have a salary bigger than both my parents combined - which is slightly more than what I'd earned as a cashier in Chicago.
-
@gąska Tough choice. What are you going to do?
-

But lower costs of life, especially given the apartment you already have.
get a dream job as Rust developer/community organizer
Seems more fun and a better thing to have on your CV.
finish my degree
That has value too, for personal development and job applications alike.
losing green card, and work towards US citizenship.
What is your reason for going to the US?
It is probably a good idea to go there to pursue an exciting career, but as I understand, that is not the case for you.
-
@gąska a few thoughts.
Absolute earnings don't really matter. Poland is cheaper to live in, so you might earn more in terms of spending power
A job you'll enjoy more can be worth taking less money sometimes
You're young IIRC. Plenty of time to switch career paths if things change , especially with some solid experience from a decent job
Don't underestimate the value of having friends and family around, but equally it's not everything. I've moved across the country for jobs multiple times and although it can be hard at first even an introvert like me can get a social circle built up
-
@gąska you have a lot less chance of being murdered in Poland - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate
OTOH, you don't need to type weird characters in english, and their calculators work in the normal way
OTOH, Poland uses the metric system
That's a really hard choice
-
@gąska My company actually just posted an opening that I could possibly refer you for. I think it's even on my team, though I don't know. This company has its share of problems, but all the SAFe wackos dissolved along with the project they caused the death of, so there's that. You'd also be somewhere relatively expensive, since that's how Portland is.
If it isn't with my team, you could end up using a legacy, proprietary programming language designed 30 years ago, but either way you'd probably also use C#.
So yeah, now that this is available, I'll throw it on the table at least, even though you seem to be quite conflicted as it is.

I don't understand why people still say, "this century". "This millennium" sounds far more impressive.

Millenium is too fucking long and has a lame mouthfeel.

@weng especially in Polish (wiek vs. tysiąclecie).

In case someone wonders. The Americans didn't call me yet, so the dilemma solved itself.
