Dragon Dil- er, Helmet!

  • BINNED

There's some kind of open-source virtual assistant in development called Dragonfire, which I think is an excellent product name and it doesn't sound like a 12 year old came up with the name. Sure, why not.

And then someone apparently came up with a genius idea: What if we designed A HELMET THAT WOULD RUN A LINUX DISTRO WITH THAT ASSISTANT AND PEOPLE WOULD WEAR THAT HELMET WHILE JUST WALKING AROUND TOWN BECAUSE APPARENTLY SOON WE WON'T BE ABLE TO BREATHE AIR IN CITIES OR SOMETHING BUT NO OF COURSE THE HELMET DOESN'T ACTUALLY DO ANYTHING TO FILTER ANYTHING AND THE PARTS THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO COVER YOUR MOUTH AND NOSE HAVE A MESH WITH HOLES SO BIG I COULD PUSH A CIGARETTE THROUGH.

I'm sorry, I got so excited over the idea literally couldn't even for a moment. Anyway, introducing

    Dragon Helmet!

What is this person/people thinking? "I don't look like enough of a tool when using a digital assistant in public, I better step up my game"?

Oh and there are greyed-out links to other armor pieces in the top right corner so I guess they're planning on building an entire Iron Man type suit or something. Are we sure this isn't actually a 12 year old? Because if it is, they make much better websites than I did at 12 (or ever). I also didn't look like a grown man when I was 12, so I dunno.

@blek Toby Faire, if I could have an armored outer suit that actually included things like air filtering and a smart assistant, I would totally wear one every damn day. It'd be one more layer between me and people, and it would be functionally useful.

Now, the gulf between that and what's presented here...

  • BINNED

I kinda feel bad making fun of the guy because he doesn't seem like an asshole and he's not asking for loads of money (or any money) on Kickstarter or Gofundme, his Patreon has no patrons, and he's got 3 subscribers on Google+. It seems like an ill thought out passion project, not some kind of ridiculous scam. But good grief, this is the dumbest thing I've seen in at least the last 3 hours, and believe me, I've seen some seriously dumb shit today. Also we made fun of the TempleOS guy here too and that was just pure mental illness.

  • sekret PM club

@e4tmyl33t Also, I'd prefer mine to look/be more like this than Iron Man:

  • BINNED

@e4tmyl33t Yeah, and you could drive a Land Raider to work.

  • sekret PM club

@blek Nah, I'd borrow one of the Ravenwing's land speeders. The newer models have big fuckoff plasma turrets on them!

  • BINNED

@e4tmyl33t Those are so impractical. What if you go on a road trip and need to fit in a couple Battle Brothers in Terminator armor, and like all of the beer? It's like having a Miata as your only car. Well, a Miata with a big fuckoff plasma turret, but still.

    Battle Brothers in Terminator armor

Those fuckers in the Deathwing have teleport homers, they can make their own way there.

  • I never asked for this.

I just noticed the website has a Google map at the bottom, pointing roughly to a USPS office. You can't tell exactly because if you click the Google logo on the embedded map to open the full map, Google helpfully gets rid of the marker because Google is smart. But I digress. Is he trying to tell us something?

    *looks around on the map*

Hmm, there's also a Bank of America. Is he building a supersuit to rob it? Is he being forced to build a supersuit by some kind of villain who is so strapped for money he made this guy set up a Patreon to fund the whole venture?

    ACTUALLY WAIT A MINUTE

There's also a restaurant called Boeuf&Bun on the corner... is this 4chan trying to design a supersuit to take down Shia LaBoeuf's flag?! :thonking: :thonking: :thonking:

  • Very soon we will need to cover our nostrils and mouths with a filter to protect our health against inevitable air pollution.

    He must live in China.

  • This is the best part of his FAQ:

Dragonfire confusing with her own voice?

Simply use your headphones🎧 instead of the speakers🔈 to listen Dragonfire or lower the volume.

Noise cancellation technology doesn't exist here in 2017, so the solution is: wear headphones while using your digital assistant. You know, like you have to do with Ok Google, Siri, Cortana, etc.

  • BINNED

@blakeyrat That was my first thought as well but it doesn't seem the case - or at least he doesn't seem to be from there originally.

Also, look at the model - mouth and nostrils are covered only by a mesh while the rest of the helmet is solid. He talks about how it's going to be important to protect those parts of your face and then designs a helmet that leaves those parts unprotected...

  • BINNED

@blakeyrat Well the helmet would presumably have built-in headphones so it's not an issue, right? ...right?

Haha by the way, I just noticed on the github page that one of the default activation keywords is "hey". Yeah, that's not going to be a problem at all!

Actually the commands are pretty odd in general. I can understand what he means by some of them even though they seem kinda odd (I guess you can give it a name and a gender... yay for customization, I guess), but then there's a file manager. Like, can I tell it to open an 80 gigabyte folder of midget porn (not mine, of course!) and start listing filenames in alphabetical order or something? Because that's gonna be EPIC.

    @blek
A guy has a hobby project to build an Iron Man helmet and virtual assistant.
Sure, it is difficult, impractical and most likely will never be finished.
But I would still count his project as a success if he can:

    • have fun
    • learn about interesting technologies
    • befriend people who share his interest

Oh, it is definitely not suitable for a market product, but he does not plan to sell it at all.
Despite that, the demo video is more believable than most kickstarters, because it shows the actual software, even if its flawed.

This would be ridiculous as a kickstarter or corporate announcement, but I find it completely fitting as a hobby project.

Have you checked the design for any inserts so as to make a replaceable filter? I guess you wouldn't want to throw away this helmet just because the particulate filters got clogged.

  • @adynathos Fine but then why is he trying to recruit US.

  • BINNED

@adynathos Yeah, as I said, I don't hate it that much because he's not scamming anyone - but the website he has is insane and the whole concept has serious flaws that really shouldn't be there even in the inital stages of the product...

Also the weird flaws in the robot voice in that video make it sound like it's barely holding back tears and it's really creepy:

    "Dragonforce."
"Wh-what is your command? (please don't hurt me)"

So there's that. (I know, early prototype...)

  • I actually think the helmet looks kinda cool.

  • BINNED

@jbert Hmm. If you look at the inside of the model, there's something in the cheek ventilation meshes. That something looks like satellite speakers. It could be a placeholder for an air filter but the ventilation slit in the middle doesn't have anything behind it, just a mesh that wouldn't filter anything unless you're focused about floating pieces of charcoal in the air. I guess China could do that.

It could also be a built in PA system, which is what I choose to believe because that's way more cool. Enhanced screaming!

There also seem to be built in headphones inside (same bare speaker model), and the slits on the back of the head seem to have fans for some reason.

To cool off the computer you're going to be getting cozy with? Heat dissipation is a really annoying problem!

  • BINNED

@tsaukpaetra Yeah but they're blowing air at the back of your head, the slits go right through. The airflow would be horrendous. I mean the helmet seems to have two layers with space between, so if it would require active cooling, I'd expect maybe a couple of fans to direct air through ducts in there - but no, it's just there to ruffle your hair I guess.

Maybe they're from China. Probably live near :hanzo:
