Room planning thread

I bought an apartment and I'll be moving in about half a year (hopefully...). It's going to be a brand new, completely unfurnished place, to the point where the windows won't have blinds on them. I've been thinking about how I'll furnish it, I don't have a full idea yet but I have some thoughts that I'd appreciate feedback on because I'm a completely tasteless Philistine and so are most of my friends.

This is the floor plan (the furniture is just a suggestion):

For reference, the living room is 9x3.1 m.

Except for the bathroom the whole place will have white walls and white doors and doorframes. The floors and skirtboards will be this decor (the one on the right):

I also went to a kitchen studio earlier to get a layout, and we came up with this:

    https://i.imgur.com/CsQnM2t.jpg

(The tiles and the fume hood are just placeholders because they didn't have 3d models for the stuff I'm actually getting. The tile I have there actually looks more similar to this, and the fume hood will be one of those slanted ones.

I'm not too sure about the kitchen, I think I might visit the studio again and get the bar lowered to just slightly above the counter, and maybe change the wood shade - I'm not too sure about that and that's one of the things I wanted to ask. I feel like it would look better if the countertops and the top cabinets matched the shade of the floor, and if the bar's vertical leg was white too.

Also I'm gonna digress here for a second, but speaking of kitchens, why the fuck does every manufacturer insist on touch controls that don't work at all if your hands are wet? FOR KITCHEN APPLIANCES?! I mean there are literally zero electric stovetops currently on the market with good old buttons or knobs. One would think someone would see a niche there and fill it, but nooooooo... :headdesk:

Other than that, I went to a furniture store earlier and I saw a Chesterfield couch and I pretty much fell in love with. How much of a bad idea is it? IThese things are pretty expensive (~$1500) and you have to take care of them because leather, but I feel like it could look really good with some minimalist-ish modern furniture. I'm also considering something like this, except ideally it should sit flat on the floor with no legs so that stuff doesn't fall under it and so that I'm more comfortable in case someone sits on an armrest.

There must be some. Got one a few months ago. They might cost more though.

Anyway, the main thing wrong I see is a lack of storage. You can't have too much of that I find…

@dkf I last checked about 6 months ago when I went to the kitchen studio and there was literally nothing on the market around here. I consider myself lucky that I got a fume hood with buttons. I'll check again tomorrow but I don't think it's going to be different.

Regarding storage, you mean in the kitchen? The drawers next to the sink should be enough, I don't really store a whole lot of food outside the fridge, so I don't think that's a concern. I was considering getting a smaller fridge and using some of that space for dry food storage but I really don't think that's going to be necessary.

@blek Keep the contrast on the countertops and leg. It would be unspeakably bland otherwise.

When we remodeled our kitchen we spent ages finding a gas cooktop with the controls in the same arrangement as the burners. Not long after the model was discontinued.

And counter area. To me, there isn't nearly enough, even with the area that's kind of hidden behind the bar.

Is the tall cabinet a refrigerator? It doesn't really look like one in the picture. If not, where is it?

  • BINNED

@hardwaregeek Yeah, the tall cabinet is a fridge and a freezer (at the bottom).

  • 🚽 Regular

@blek Either I'm completely misinterpreting things or the sink and cooker are switched around between the plan and the 3D concept.

Edit: I suppose the entrance is through 01, and 05 is a balcony or private yard? An entrance connecting straight to the kitchen and bathroom feels weird.

I just bought one, like 2 months ago. Knobs to set the burner, buttons to program the oven and timer. (The buttons are those "flush with the frame and covered in plastic" kind, but that's what you want on an oven because you don't want spaghetti sauce jammed in them.) About $500 for oven and range. Amana brand.

But you don't live in Blekistan. What's available there may well be entirely different from what's here.

It's a built-in refrigerator. Very popular in Europe.

If you're just keeping cooking gear in the kitchen, you'll probably be fine. If you expect to store clean dishes and glassware there as well, I expect you'll fall short.

From the main plan, I'd say the distance from the bathroom to the bedroom is quite far. But to each their own.

you have to take care of them because leather,

The care is not anything major, and they are super easy to clean. Ours have also stood up to two dogs and two kids and still look great. Just get a good leather cleaner and wipe them down every once in a while. No big deal.

  • BINNED

@zecc Yeah, they're switched compared to the original plan, and yes, entrance is through 01 and 05 is a balcony (the flat is on the 4th floor).

    It’s actually both: Central-Eastern Europe. Country’s called Czechia. 🇨🇿 ;)

Sorry, I meant THE Great Country State of Czechia Republic!

    Heil! :)

  • BINNED

Anyway, yeah, specific brand recommendations won't do me much good because the brands available in the US typically won't be available here. I've never heard of Amana.

Regarding the stovetop I checked again and it seems that Gorenje has a new model that has actual knobs, so I'm going to get that instead, even though it's kinda ugly. Seriously, fuck touch controls in the kitchen.

  • BINNED

@blek said in Room planning thread:

    old buttons or knobs.

because they brake, especially the turning knobs, dirt and humidity hides under the knob and ultimately one of the knobs will fail. In many cases causing a need to replace more then one and when you have replaced them all you are already halfway past a complete new stove.
