So you got the right to be drafted?   Turning 18 is like turning 50.  Not young anymore, but still don't qualify for the benefits of being older.

He can buy cigarettes, porn and guns and enter into contracts legally.  It's not as good as 21, but it's close.

    To recap:

    1. He can now buy something which causes cancer
    2. He can now buy something he can get easier (and probably better) for free on the internet
    3. He can buy a handgun (he could already buy other types of guns) assuming he lives in an area of the country which still remembers what the constitution is.
    4. He can now be held accountable for his actions in a court of law.

      Sounds fucking awesome!

    Cancer and flavor.

    Good point; he's a furry.

How is that not a bonus?

He could anyway; they try teenagers as adults all the time.  Now he can enter into contracts, though, which opens up a whole new world of offenses he can commit.

Don't forget, if they reinstitute the draft, he could be conscripted as cannon fodder, his blood used to grease the machines of war.

    Oh, hello.
There are meanderings towards that direction in the UK at the moment.
Not that they're getting much credibility at the moment. It's being likened to slavery on various blogs.

Not that I'd object to my chavish neighbours' crotchfruit being subjected to some dicipline for a change, but I can hope...

You're probably right.  Also, congrats on being able to fart words.

If there is any sense left in the world, your kind will be the first to go.  They'll parachute you into the heart of the enemy's defenses so that the real army can move in while the enemy's attention is busy killing you.

I think he is under the mistaken impression that the military won't draft a family's only child.

Or we could just turn our furries over to our enemy to be used as slave laborers, thus ending the conflict peacefully.

Oh, wow, you're right.  I guess I was unprepared to handle the prospect of a properly-constructed sentence from him, so I automatically assumed it wasn't one.

Having had the sentence clarified, it is wrong.  Sole survivor status only applies when one or more sibling or parent is killed, 100% disabled, or captured/MIA due to service in the military.  And then, the benefits of the status (administrative discharge and being withheld from combat zones) are strictly voluntary, meaning that you have to request them.  And then, it's only policy, not law, meaning it can be quickly and easily changed.  And then, it's not applicable during times of war or national emergency.

Of course, it's all irrelevent since there is no draft and we're not likely to have one.  Also, he's openly homosexual and our President hates teh ghey.

It's Australia; he could also buy human organs, bazookas, child sex slaves and plutonium, but not clean drinking water or penicillin.

As far as I know, in most states, you must be 18 to by a rifle/shotgun and 21 to buy a handgun. You can be "gifted" a handgun at 18, but you can't just go out an buy one. I'm not aware of any state that lets you purchase a gun under the age of 18 (again, your parents can give one to you, but you can't go to the store and buy one).

According to Wikipedia (bad idea to rely on, and it's probably wrong) a 16 yr old can order booze in a pub in Scotland if it's with a meal. (I went there looking for the justification of a child over 5 legitimately being able to drink alcohol in the UK, but it appears it has to happen on private premises and not licenced premises.)
