Construction WTF

  • Meant to post this aaaages ago but never had a camera on me whenever passing this WTF. Here's a pic of a pedestrian entrance to a new apartment block near my home. As you can see whoever was installing the railing might have forgotten that an entrance was actually supposed to go there.

  •  You've got to give them credit for equality.  If only short people can fit through the entrance, then nobody gets to use it!

  • How am I supposed to let my annoying neighbor's kids go play in traffic with that wooden pallet blocking the way?

  • OK... so is the pallet there to allow people to climb over the fence or to stop them from crawling under it?  Or, in other words, is the problem here that the fence blocks the way, or that it doesn't block it well enough?

(Ps. If you were going to answer "yes", please kindly backtrack and try the other possible parsing.  Thank you. :-))

  •  That's obviously a doggy door for some kind of monster dog.

Maybe it was whoever was installing the entrance that forgot that a railing was actually supposed to go there?

    The gardener and pavers too?

  • 30 minutes with a hacksaw would fix that right up. but i guess 1 minute with the wood pallet is easier.

  • The worst part is that this is the exact real-life analog of the code I've seen my colleagues write. Seriously, it started of as x, but then it became y and now it's a bunch of retarded paches piled one onto the other because noone can be bothered to refactor and "hey, it works, man".

You wouldn't even need that.  If you look closely you'll see that the railing across the gap appears to be secured with nothing more than a few twists of copper wire.

that describes about 98% of the code out there

Yes, that was the implication, but it's really not worth explaining throw-away one-liners, you either enjoy a brief moment of cognitive dissonance or you don't.

And those mounting points with the big shiny nuts and bolts look like they might make decent hinges.  I wonder if this is just a temporary measure to stop people using it while the mortar and brickwork all sets and settles in, and then they're going to take off that segment of spare fencing they put across it and mount a proper gate of some sort, on hinges.  This may yet turn out to be Not A Wtf.

Please Note: When I said I meant to post this aaaaaaaages ago I meant approx 4-5 months ago... I just never had a camera anytime I was passing. All the apartments with appear to be now occupied so I have to guess that it's been left with a half-assessment job. Someone fucked up and the construction company still managed too sell all the apartments so they can now run off without finishing or should I say correcting the job.

Looking at the picture, the railing across the entrance doesn't line up with the fence proper, so my guess is that the intention was what DaveK said, but they simply forgot about it.

It's like the Marie Celeste of building works... the first witnesses to arrive on the scene discovered the work on the railing half-finished, and there was even a warm mug of builders' tea sat on the wall, still gently steaming...   but of the builders, no sign was ever seen again.
