Screen recording software

So I need to record a thing on my work computer.
OBS crashes if I tell it to do anything. Yay opensores.
Snagit costs money.
So does Camtasia.Windows 7. What other options are out there? Google results are all alarmingly shady.
-
@weng Go the "gloves" route:
Install the NVidia software suite
Set up Shadowplay to stream to Twitch
Set up Twitch to save a recording of every stream you do
Start recording the thing
Save the Twitch recording of the stream
-
I think Xsplit has a free version
-
@e4tmyl33t If you have an NVidia card, Shadowplay can just save directly to a file. Not sure why you're using Twitch in the process here.
Shadowplay is a good option, although it compresses more than I'd like and there's no quality settings really.
If you upgraded to Windows 10, this is built-in to the OS. Just FYI.

Mostly because I was being cheeky and suggesting one of the longer, more roundabout routes for doing this I could have.

I've used WebMCam for short stuff, like ahem demonstrating forum software bugs.
-
In the past, I've used Microsoft Expression, but I don't think that's around anymore. I think VLC can do it.
-
@e4tmyl33t Intel HD Graphics yo
-
@blakeyrat Yeah. WtfCorp is allegedly rolling out Win10. Somewhere.
-
@zecc This thing looks like the business.
-
@weng it also fucking works with no drama or bullshit. Excellent.
-
@weng I'm using Screencast-O-Matic.
I like it because you can provide a storyboard (which can then serve as captions). Annotations, drawings and highlighters are also nice. And you can adjust the viewport to only show the pertinent part of the screen.
-
Open Skype for Business, start a meeting with yourself. Share desktop/program, and start recording.
Only drawback is that you need a functioning Skype for business...

I use Bandicam. Seems to work well. Not free (why is everyone so allergic to paying for stuff?)

I wrote a batch file that invokes
ffmpeg
. (captures video without sound)@echo off set "ffmpeg=\path\to\ffmpeg.exe" set "mogrify=\path\to\mogrify.exe" : REM Only needed for PNG capture set "output=%userprofile%\desktop\capture" set fps=25 set w=1920 set h=1080 set x=0 set y=0 set delay=5 if not "%delay%" equ "0" ping 0 -n %delay% >nul :: Pick one. goto capture_video ::goto capture_png :: ==== capture to video file ==== :capture_video :: To achieve a reasonably fast FPS with a small output file size, capture has to be done in two steps. :: Because the actual FPS of the capture can be no higher than the FPS of the encoding method you use, :: and because a CPU-intensive encoding method would slow down your computer and spoil the video, :: an extremely fast, lightweight encoding method is needed to first capture video a high frame rate. :: To end capture, press 'Q'. It will then begin re-encoding with a more efficient (and slower) codec; :: don't press 'Q' during re-encoding unless you want to truncate the video and discard the rest of it. :: Capture h264 in lossless mode -- press 'Q' to end the capture (very fast, low CPU -- don't change this) "%ffmpeg%" -framerate %fps% -f gdigrab -i desktop -vcodec libx264 -qp 0 -preset ultrafast -filter:v "crop=%w%:%h%:%x%:%y%" "%output%.mkv" :: Re-encode the capture to WebM video with the VP9 codec (or anything you like... check the ffmpeg docs) "%ffmpeg%" -i "%output%.mkv" -vcodec libvpx-vp9 -crf 31 -b:v 0 "%output%.webm" :: Delete the lossless copy that was created (you can comment this out if you want to keep it) del "%output%.mkv" exit /b :: ==== capture to PNG images ==== :capture_png :: Record each frame as a separate PNG image in a folder (e.g. to use as frames in an animated GIF) set /a ms=1000/%fps% if not exist %output% mkdir %output% "%ffmpeg%" -f gdigrab -framerate %fps% -i desktop -filter:v "crop=%w%:%h%:%x%:%y%" "%output%\%%08d (%ms%ms).png" :: Use ImageMagick's mogrify tool to remove alpha channel from images :: This fixes ffmpeg's transparent square cursor glitch (all the alpha values are 0 if the cursor has any inverted pixels) "%mogrify%" -alpha off "%output%\*.png" exit /b
Obviously the location of
ffmpeg.exe
must be set (but can be anywhere, and doesn't need to be installed -- just download the .zip and unpack it somewhere), and the output filename, FPS, and w/h/x/y values can/should be adjusted to your liking.(don't give the output filename an extension; if you want to get into the weeds, that's specified in the ffmpeg command itself, because it affects what ffmpeg options you can/should use.)
To record frames as PNG images (instead of a video)...
Comment/uncomment the respective lines, and make sure that the location of
mogrify.exe
is specified... there's a peculiar thing that ffmpeg does in PNG mode, which I think is a bug: when a mouse cursor with inverting pixels is active, it correctly calculates the RGB values of the pixels inside the cursor's box, but for some reason it sets the alpha of them to 0, making them transparent. So instead of the cursor, you get a square "hole":The PNG images it saves have a
ms
duration in the filename, which allows simply dragging them into GIMP as layers and then exporting to an animated GIF without fussing with the frame durations. (You probably still want to manually convert to indexed mode and then run the "Animation > Optimize (for GIF)" filter, though.)

I'm assuming you already submitted the log to their issue tracker?
-
@masonwheeler yes. Or should I have added "as the only attendee"? Or is it about the actual mechanics (for extra wtf-ery I plan a meeting in Outlook, make it a Live-meeting, lick the generated link, which open SfB/Lync, and voila, you have a private meeting for yourself to enjoy).
-
@lb_ Will do so when I'm not trying to GTFO early without anyone noticing

Or click it, if you rather do that... (note 2 self: Don't do text entry on a phone)

It'll also set your SfB status to "In a conference call" or "In a presentation", giving people a reason not to bother you too much.

If non-free is an option, SnagIt is pretty outstanding.

OBS works fine for me. You must be .

I wouldn't lick any generated link without knowing his priors ... who knows where it has been

@anotherusername Sniped and bookmarked!

Or how many times it's been shared!
Or if it's been redirected through an ad minifier through an ad minifier etc....

@tsaukpaetra
that's the way you get those nasty viruses
