Which tablet should I buy?
-
Requirements:
- Android (I have an existing software license I need to use)
- Do not need powerful hardware or huge storage space. It will mostly only be used for viewing sheet music and chord charts. So it should be cheaper. It's replacing my dying Wayteq craplet which was $100 new.
- Current Android version with the more granular permission management
- Will receive OS updates
- Durable; will work for many years without the battery dying or similar
- Preferably no preinstalled crapware
-
It's a shame Google's abandoned the Nexus line: the Nexus 10 would have worked quite well I think. But all they have now is the Pixel C, which is probably more than you need.
-
While this isn't what you asked for, you may find it interesting:
There are some pretty cheap tablets that can run that too.
-
@marczellm Amazon Fire is probably the best device in your price range.

You didn't mention screen size. The Fire tablets with the bigger screen are a bit more $$$.

Looks nice! Doesn't ship to Hungary unfortunately. Also it doesn't seem to support Google Play Store, which is where my existing app license lives.

Aspirin.

Nor does the Pixel C. Google

Here's a list of cheap tablets generally available in my country:
-
@marczellm Uh I don't know anything about any of those.
I can say I've never had a problem with a piece of ASUS hardware, so.
-
Geez, most of those are Android 4, 5, 6. Only Huaweis offer 7 in that store.

Yeah but that company's name sounds like the noise my cat makes right before spitting up a hairball.
Call me shallow, but I wouldn't buy a tablet from hairball noise, inc.
-
Been to some stores today. The store people told me that even if I shell out 2-3 times as much ($200, $300), the tablet is unlikely to last more than 3 years. To hell with planned obsolescence.

I had the ASUS ZenPad 8 and it wouldn't charge by around 18 months. I was particularly rough with it and dropped it many times.
-
Until this week, I would have suggested the Fire HD 8 which was $25 after discounts. You have to workaround a bunch of the Amazon bullshit, but you can easily remove the crapware, install the Google Play store, and hook in to the home button to use a different launcher as long as you didn't let the system update before doing this stuff.
But, alas, it is back to
its normal price$58. But you have to apply at least 1 AmEx point for it to be that cost.@marczellm the Fire does support the Play Store, etc. You just have to sideload the Google Account/Services/Services Framework/Play Store APKs first.

In the last 3 years, I bought about 5 Asus tablets.
None of them are still functional

-
@jazzyjosh Yes but there is still no such thing as a Fire tablet in Hungary. Also I haven't the faintest what an AmEx point is.
-
Now I'm looking at
- Lenovo Tab4
- Huawei MediaPad T3
- iPad
Yes I would have to buy some software that I already own for Android, but if I look at it this way, an Android tablet serves 3 years for $200, that's $66/year. If an iPad, available for $500 in Hungary (yes, it's ridiculous) serves me for 7-8 years then they are effectively the same.

But the only source for those are sketchy sites that ripped them from some other real device, right? I didn't think Google just hosts those APKs for download?

If it helps, I live in the US and I don't either.
I don't have an American Express credit card, though, and I wager that is essential to the process of obtaining "AmEx points". But that's just a guess.

I did it on my Fire and the tool I found that did it was pretty professional and worked slick. The hardest part was getting the PC to talk to the Android device when it's in developer mode (there's like a special driver you need to install).
AFAIK, Google gives no shits if a Amazon device has Google Play on it. I used mine exclusively to play a game that was ONLY on Google Play and never on Amazon Store, and it worked fine. Since Google still got the $$$, I can't see why they'd care. Nothing in the UI is broken, although the Google Play apps don't interact as nicely in the customized Amazon Fire UI as Amazon apps, they're still listed in "All Apps" and they still show up correctly in their category. So.
BTW, tons of the apps and almost all of the games in the Amazon Store are "developer is paid by the minute" deals which you can use for free if you have Amazon Prime, so that's pretty slick if you use your tablet to play games.

Depends what you need it for and how you treat it. My 2013 Nexus 7 was still running fine until earlier this year when I broke the screen due to carelessness. It wasn't getting Android updates any more but there are still ROMs if you have to have the latest software

That reminds me, I have a Dell Venue 8 which is pretty old. Too old to play Pokemon Go on it. But I keep it still has baby games and videos for my daughter.

From now on known as the Karla Performance Score.
How fast is this new iphone?
It's only 1.5 Karla's faster then the old model.
I'll wait then until next year. I hear that version will judo chop all predecessors in performance.
There is a pre-order queue at the front-desk.
