@rad131304 I'd like to read the description of it but every time I get about 3 words in, Google says "first, let's verify it's actually you" and seems to want me to log in and then I said fuck it.

did that for me too, fortunately in incognito mode i could tell the login screen to piss off
for the lazy

@accalia crap didn't realize it was doing that. We use google chat at work so I'm always logged in.
Basically it's an app that detects the bluetooth signal of some credit card skimmers.

Yeah same here with the login,
what the hell causes that?apparently therdid=
, but what is that even supposed to be doing? I thought I was getting phished. Also why does any link generated by NodeBB to any app I try have Arabic (or something) words in it when the whole page is in English?

2nd! I was curious about that as well

I read a couple of pages of reviews, mostly saying "works well. Hasn't detected any yet"
-
You have to put your cards into machines, like cavemen?

Is that really such a common problem? I've read stories and warnings about it, sure, but I have yet to meet any real person who has told me that he or she has actually seen such a thing directly. Not a friend of a friend, but a direct testimony.
I think you'd better be worried about cruising the wrong part of the city and getting mugged (and here I know some people who were directl victims!) than this.

Duh. This is the US. We still have to swipe in many places.
-
@coldandtired said in Kind of a cool app ...:

It frees up that hand for reloading the gun while we defend ourselves at the automatic ATM machine (tellers of the human persuasion often provide this as a free service to customers, so) or while pumping gas (also why we risk explosions with the dealiebops that allow you to let go of the handle of the gas pump but that keeps the gas flowing).
-
@boomzilla Actually, I really do not want cards that do not require being put into a machine somehow. I guess that my natural sloth would probably overcome my lack of trust for people being able to remotely read the information on my cards, but I'm not trying to imply that's a good thing.
-
@boomzilla I'm ok with putting the card in a thing, but y'all need to cut it out with the signatures
I lived in the US for 4 months and after using my credit card everywhere my signature deteriorated into a wiggly line
-
@bb36e said in Kind of a cool app ...:

Yeah, I'm not really sure what the point of that is any more. So long as they don't make us go to PINs numbers like Eurotards.
-
@bb36e said in Kind of a cool app ...:

It's even worse now where I live, a lot of businesses are using iPads running square instead of a traditional POS. (INB4 iPads are a POS.) Drawing my signature with my finger on a tablet or phone is basically impossible, so wiggly line it is. My wife is really tempted to start drawing penises on those things...
-
@boomzilla said in Kind of a cool app ...:

I need my PIN about twice a month, and my card hasn't left my wallet for about three years. I got my transactions achievement years ago.
-
@coldandtired said in Kind of a cool app ...:

So: what's the point (assuming you use the card a lot)?
No, but seriously.
-
@boomzilla Oh, also, @coldandtired, do you have to take your wallet out of your pocket or whatever? Or do you wave your butt at the machine? Or does it ever read the wrong card if someone else is nearby?
-

That's what mine is.
My husband laughs every time he sees me sign something.
-
@boomzilla I only have one bank card in my wallet (which, while not a credit card, works with pretty much everything you used to need a credit card for). so I just have to wave my wallet near the reader. I don't think the readers are powerful enough to read it if it was inside my bag, and they are usually placed too high for trouser pockets.
The PIN is only needed if the transaction is over 50 PLN, which is generally enough for daily purchases. As far as I know that limit can't be changed (at least in my bank).
-
@coldandtired said in Kind of a cool app ...:

I have 4. Would really suck if waving my butt caused all 4 to trigger... (I use certain cards for certain things - points)
-
@bb36e Damn, zug.com is down.
Used to have a great page on the "credit card prank" where he'd just start writing random shit on credit card slips, taking a photo of it, while paying. He'd draw animals, a portrait of Hitler, then eventually phrases like "I will not pay my credit card bill".
It was pretty funny. It ended up with him going to Best Buy and putting like $16,000 worth of electronics on a card just to see if they'd bother matching signatures for such a large amount of goods. (They did.)
-
@boomzilla I regret that I have but one U-boat to give...
-

And signatures are generally only required here after $25 or $50 depending on the retailer (they don't want to hold up the line for small stuff). I don't think I sign for anything more than about twice a month given most large purchases I make would be on the Internet. I guess I sign at restaurants, but I don't go out much (and I consider it more convenient to do that whenever I'm ready than have a machine brought to me).
-
@boomzilla said in Kind of a cool app ...:

In theory it proves that the card is yours and not stolen. They're supposed to compare it against the one on card. Mostly a legal requirement.

The problem is that not only they don't do it, but even when someone steals and uses a blatantly false signature, and you point it out later (when you contest the payment), they don't accept that it was their fault.
This happened to my mother, on a cheque which is kind of the same process as with the card (the bank is supposed to check the signature vs. the one they have on file before paying). Someone managed to steal a cheque and sign it. My mother contested the charge and requested a copy of the cheque to prove she didn't sign it. It was obvious when she got it (and had to pay for the copy, of course, because a bank will fuck you in every way they can) that it wasn't her signature, and the bank did not even try to say that it was hers. Yet they never admitted it was their fault, they only consented to a "commercial gesture" (this expression always makes me think ) of reimbursing her the amount -- so she didn't lose any money and let the thing slide in the end, but they were careful in making sure it was no admission of guilt. 'cause, you know, doing what is your legal obligation as a bank is a hassle.

This app uses your phone's Bluetooth radio to detect a common radio component in modern fuel pump skimmers (HC-05)
Hey, I used that module to build a bluetooth thing a couple years ago! ARE YOU CALLING ME A SCAMMER? FLAGGED FOR LIBEL
Seriously though, that's just the cheap Chinese bluetooth module that 99% of Arduino hobbyists use. You're bound to get more false positives than real positives.

You're not likely to find a false positive attached to a gas pump, though. So it's still a pretty good idea.

I recently had a number of fraudulent transactions on my debit card. I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure they got the info from a skimmer.

Using mBank, huh? They screwed up gamification so hard I can’t even…

No, but seriously.
In Poland, if you pay via contactless you don’t have to enter PIN for transactions up to 50 PLN (around $12). They’re thinking about increasing this limit to something like 80 or 100 PLN now.

If the reader detects more than 1 card it yells at you and requests a retry.

I wonder if there's such a thing as bait cards I can request, that when skimmed and then subsequently used would instantly trigger fraud investigation...

Not really, no, not in my case.

I think my card may have been skimmed. I think it was at a parking meter in NYC. That's the only place I remember using my card and a few weeks later someone had a clone of it.

It sounds like we need to give all our cards condoms nowadays...
