More Verizon Math at SoftLayer

  •  I would have thought that the youtube videos would have cured everyone of Verizon Math but apparently not.

Last time I checked, $99/month isn't quite the deal as $1.12/month is.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

Where are you getting $1.12 from?

    ?

Round, and assuming a month = 31 days.

  • 31 days *24 (hours/ day) * .15 cents / 100 (cents/$)=  1.12 $ (111.6 cents)

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

Oh bugger - finally noticed the decimal point; clearly the Verizon hint wasn't enough for me.

    Never mind me..

  • In addition to laughing at them, I contacted their sales department, and explained what this number actually meant. They'll be fixing the graphic shortly, and they're sending me a free T-shirt for my troubles! Thanks for the pointer.

You know that you need to snap yourself wearing this shirt, upload it, and change your avatar to said pic.

  •  Took me awhile to realize this wasn't actually Verizon again.  I was like "Why the fuck is Verizon jumping on the cloud bandwagon"?

They actually did put a lot of money into cloud technology, until they discovered that what they had invested in wasn't actually a way to generate storm clouds and send hurricanes to destroy their customers enemies.

They could have saved some money and just rewritten the US Constitution to allow George W. Bush to be President forever.

  • I think they looked into it and decided to donate to the Obama campaign.  It's quicker, easier, and much more destructive - not an easy feat, to be sure.

  •  Lemme just take this oportunity to say that while Softlayer's prices aren't great, their reliability is tops.  We've been using 'em for a year and a half, and have had maybe 5 minutes of downtime that could even be remotely attributed to them -- there was a network hiccup one day.  Our web frontend was showing 400 days of continuous uptime as of yesterday.

When Rackspace's dallas datacenter went down earlier this summer (and several others, IIRC), SoftLayer just kept humming along.

Their prices are up there compared to some of the bargin-basement hosts out there, but for the quality, they're not bad.

I was wondering what the fuck everyone was talking about since they had already fixed it by the time I looked.   Guess that is just a lesson to always screenshot things found live on the web since they will probably change.

Luckily there's a screen capture preserving the error right there in the original post.

  • Isnt the WTF here because of how english majors are taught to put US currency together? People are told that 15c = $0.15. however, some english teachers I've had in MIDDLE SCHOOL have stated you write this as $0.15c, as there is 0 USD and .15c. However, people are not taught that .15c = 15/100 cents. (15/10000 USD). Also, the occasional POS system writes change <$1 as ".xx cents". So thank some engrish major for this one.

    FTFY.

The teachers you had were imbeciles, as should have been obvious by virtue of their inability to land a better job than "middle-school English teacher."

The real problem, of course, is the ad copy writer who is still applying writing principles that he learned in middle school (and not just any middle school, but apparently one worse than mine).  I wonder if said writer is using those years as the basis for anything else in life.

    Maybe they like to teach.

    These people exist.

He's half-right.  Some people do like to teach.

But nobody likes to teach middle school.

What about pedophile gym teachers with an office that looks out into the boy's locker room?  Mr. Hannah always seemed pretty happy to me.

  • See my most recent twitpic.

They sent me a T-shirt (nice black one), drinking glass, toss ring, and a cool plastic carrying bag!

  • Wow!  This is just the gift that keeps on giving.

I don't know that I've ever run across anyone so impressed with themselves for getting a free t-shirt, frisbee, and bag or whatever.

But before you state the obvious - you're right, I'm just jealous because I didn't score all that crap by noticing it first.  Wait a minute...

I hope you're at least scoring some Mary.  Then again I can't imagine someone thing this is cool and being worth scoring..

Alex also deserves a piece of that action, for giving you a (literal) forum to point out the mistake.  And logically, this forum wouldn't exist without active contributors, so 20% of the Frisbee along with the bottom half of the glass should go to the forum member with the highest post count, whoever that might be.

But.. but.. I thought it was pretty cool..   Well, it's good to know the bitter jealousy hasn't warped your mind to the point where you can no longer recognize an attractive man (and prolific poster) who is worth scoring.

Seriously, credit to SoftLayer for responding this way rather than how Verizon handled it.

  • Yeah, getting SoftLayer squared away is pretty cool (something I didn't feel like doing myself).  Them giving away something for helping them out is pretty cool.  Alex having a forum for me is pretty cool and providing the sponsor for me to post is about is priceless.

Posting how cool you were for noticing a mistake in an ad when you had bright neon lights pointing the way...not so much.

I'm starting to suspect that all along the errant decimal point was actually a single grain of sand that strayed from your vagina.

Sure, but I don't know if he'll appreciate it.

  • I'd be happy to pass along the entire Frisbee thingy... not my style. I'm keeping the entire T-shirt though. :) And the last thing I need is another carrying case thingy, so I'll easily part with that as well.
