Sarcastic no-shit God. I like it.

  •  I like the "What part of 'thou shalt not' didn't you understand?" one.

Uh..."Thou" and "Shalt"? I don't live in the Middle Ages, God.

  • Eh, I dunno how much I like the idea of God telling me to "cmon over and bring the kids." I'd, uh, rather not go right now thanks...

Why does it have to be a child with compassion?  Can't I sponsor a kid without even a trace of empathy?

People who believe in a personal god freak me the fuck out. I mean
really, even in the remote chance that there is some omnipotent entity
that we have not yet discovered, why the fuck should he care about me
and my life. And if he did, it would just mean he's a creepy old
    man/woman/it.

I know, I know, you shouldn't try to be rational about "religion", and just have "faith", whatever the fuck that actually means; but I still think that god is a lecherous old coot. (when entertaining the what-if case of god existing)

You would think that an intelligent geek would be able to concieve of and entertain for a while the notion and structure of a system with an omnipotent entity who is capable of this care without being "a creepy old man". Or the system of most any other religious worldview, for that matter.

If they're at all interested in the matter, that is - whether in terms of cultural understanding, historical understanding (of a major force in world history) or philosophy or anything like that. If they didn't care and just want to assuage their pre-existing prejudices, of course, they can be much lazier and dismissive; likewise if they just want to wage ideological warfare. In these cases you have no need for intellectual honesty or to entertain any argument which might conceivably disagree, and you can dismiss everyone with different modes of thought as brainless sheeple, and be oblivious to any hint of irony in the matter.

But don't expect a pat on the back for your insight from little old me if that's all you've got, buddy, cuz it's kinda weak. Doubly so as a matter of bragging.

This reminds me of the people who complain about voice mail and phone menus because they hate "talking to a machine", in the sense that they've apparently managed to convince themselves that their peculiar neurosis is actually part of a sage and enlightened philosophy of life.  If I had this problem, I probably wouldn't brag about it.

Start small.  Chat with some people who are only slightly religious, maybe some Unitarians or Mormons.  Then move up to some actual Christians or Jews.  With any luck, we can cure that phobia of yours in a few weeks or months.

Good point though.  Mormons are not actual Christians.

I wish Mormons around here were only slightly religious. Although, in fairness they tend to show more restraint (when they start gushing about their god) and prefer subtle conversion methods. Doesn't make their door-to-door any less annoying.

What you deem important or right, or your ability to comprehend the universe, does not determine reality.  I've heard lots of speculation from agnostics about how highly advanced aliens would appear to us (and vice versa)... think about how different their attitudes and behavior would be, and they would still be, in a way, human.  Would you expect a being that is radically different from us to have the same thoughts and experiences?

True, Mormons are very devout.  Giving Aaron the benefit of the doubt, though, I think he might have meant "people who are not particularly fanatical about religion".  Mormons tend to be very reserved and polite when interacting with non-Mormons, and much less strong in their language and posture than Evangelicals.

  • I like how this managed to go from a price increase somehow being a savings (maybe they take cues from the US Congress?) to a discussion about God.

Personally I believe in Logic, so you are left with the following possibilities: There are no deities, there are multiple deities, or there is one deity. Since those are mutually exclusive statements, only one of them can be true (that is, it is a senseless proposition to claim that there are simultaneously no deities and only one deity). (I'm ignoring, for the sake of simplicity, some of the more esoteric definitions such as mortal deities or the like which could be transient)

So the whole exercise is then to make an informed decision (I think) about which one of those possibilities matches up with observations of the universe, including historical records, the way people interact with each other, and even general physics, mathematics, and cosmology.

Hysteria, fanaticism, and other kinds of extreme "religion" are detrimental, no matter which of the three possibilities for which you are a proponent.

Then, of course, there are subclasses if you pick one of the 'deity' options: what kind of deity or deities? What is their character? etc. etc.

The worst thing, in my mind, is someone who picks any of the options "just because" rather than sitting and thinking about how observations match their theories. In fact, I often cringe when people claim to have the same conclusions regarding the spiritual as myself but they have no idea why they think that, or they use such arguments as "just because" or "they just feel that way."

By the way - where the heck did the preview button go?

I am unequivocally atheistic, but I'm not silly enough to think that logic need apply to a god. I accept that a deity or deities could exist, but see no evidence for it.  A lack of evidence is not disproof, of course, but until somebody provides something more substansive than a face in a cheese sandwich and the fact that bananas are easy to open, I'm not going to add unnecessary hypotheses. @too_many_usernames said:

I disagree.  While "I feel it in my heart" is not empirical evidence and thus doesn't sway me in the least, I accept this as a perfectly valid justification for them.  Taking that feeling as a justification for denying empirical evidence is completely unacceptable, though, which is why all the intelligent design people are 'tards.

I thought it sounded familiar when I read it back, but I couldn't place it.  It's definitely possible that I came across something similar in one of his columns.

The aphorism for this is "absence of evidence is not evidence of absence."

Combined with the other common saying, "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence", the only rational scientific position is theoretical agnosticism with practical atheism.

But again, there's not exactly any law requiring people to take the most rational scientific position on every subject.  Most people make the majority of important decisions based on belief or intuition as opposed to logical analysis.  And far too many of the "enlightened" folks who persist in disparaging every type of "theist" tend to make decisions and arrive at conclusions in exactly the same way when it comes to every other social or philosophical question - like, say, socialized health care, or "climate change."

(Hey, the can of worms was already open, right?)
