YouTube's new logo

It's shit.
-
full page animation greets me with the old logo morphing into the new logo with zero indication that i am capable of scrolling down to see the actual article.
Good job "The Verge" i am no longer motivated to actually read the article.

For the play button’s updated color, the team tried to find a grounding in the medium. “Looking at reds, we wanted to go for something that would tie to video,” Bettig explained. They settled on #FF0000, “a really pure red that goes to the RGB of video.”

Yeah… should have found a better article.
Oh well, here's a few alternatives:
-
@timebandit are there any browsers left that haven't drunk the everything is a phone brainworm and started hiding the scrollbars until you scroll?
There are a lot of words for "we changed it from something you could call a logo to an app icon next to the app name"
-
@raceprouk YouTube has desktop apps? Do they mean the browser app?
EDIT: I bet their online editing tools still require Flash to function, a technology Google themselves have shut down. Priorities! Half our features are 100% broken, but look guys, new logo.

Using Chrome Version 60.0.3112.90 on Linux, the scrollbar is there when the page load.

Same with Chrome on Windows.

The result of which is the buttons are RIDICULOUSLY bright.

They did not load for me. dunno if it was my screen resolution playing not nice with media queries or what, but chrome gave literally no indication that there was anything more than the animation to be seen.
-
I was under the impression that the play button was ALREADY their official logo.
Shows how much attention I pay to the upper left hand corner.
-
@weng You're confusing logo with icon.
-
@lb_ an icon is a type of logo.

I've been noticing the brighter icon all day and never once did I think "oh boy, this bright red sure reminds me of video!".

"... We'll bring a new level of functionality and a more consistent look across our desktop and mobile experiences," said Neal Mohan, YouTube's Chief Product Officer.
Translation: we'll make our website much shittier to better conform to our mobile experience, which is what we really want.

Eh, simplistic doesn't always mean shittier. Consistent look means Material Design for me, which is always a bonus.

I bid you good luck in your eternal crusade against visually appealing UIs. However none of that malarkey is relevant when you're talking about desktop screens, which is what the change affects.

GUYZ WE REDID OUUR LOGO
All my videos were demonetized by your broken "ad friendly" bot. People keep false flagging my content as offensive so my channel's been shut down. Scammers abuse the DCMA system to remove my videos. Corporations using bots give me ContentID strikes, even if I uploaded a private 2 second long video of a still black screen. Nazis, white supremacists and extremists are constantly posting violence and hateful videos. The comment section has little to no moderation so it's a useless cesspool. People steal my videos are re-upload them with no consequences. There are STILL no team tools to allow multiple people to manage a single account with granular permissions-- other than "everyone knows the one password for the one account". Can you fix those, please?
NEEEEEEEEEEEEW LOGOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
-
@lorne-kates You're forgetting "there's 10,000 channels doing nothing but livestreams of stolen TV shows, none of which ever receive copyright strikes or are taken down ever."

@pie_flavor IMO Google's new privacy dashboard is a hell of a lot uglier and harder to use on desktop than the old one, but meh
-
Looks like YouTube TV didn't get the memo....
-
OH! I knew/noticed something changed about it yesterday, but I wasn't able to put my finger on what was it specifically. All I could say is that it looked ...longer.
-
All of the red is now
rgb(255,0,0)
. My eyes are now bleeding.Time to install Stylish, methinks.
-
I noticed something was different (brighter reds?), but didn't immediately realize they changed the logo too.
Agreed. The old one was iconic. This new one looks like a hack job with font awesome icon and some text.

@anotherusername said in YouTube's new logo:

Actually, an icon is a piece of religious artwork, mostly found in the various Eastern Christian traditions (Orthodox, Eastern Catholic, etc.).

Hey, they say design is circular. I, for one, look forward to the resurgence of the web-safe colour palette.
-
@julianlam
Yeah, but next time it's going to be copyrighted and require an annual subscription to Google AdWords at the $1,000/yr or higher level in order to use.

Apparently there's not only a new logo, but also a new layout. With extra much whitespace everywhere. Presumably added to help me hit the various items with my mouse.
... oh, wait.
At least one can switch back to the old layout for the time being.
-
@cvi Is the new layout Chrome-only or something? It still looks the same in Vivaldi.
-

Nope, firefox here.
-
@erufael They've been switching to a new layout for a while now, it's not related to the logo.
Actually I don't think they've ever not been A/B testing new layouts.
-
Today, YouTube went black for me.
To be fair, I had switched to the black theme on YouTube Gaming a while back, and also, I like the black theme.

@jazzyjosh Only the "from scratch" video editor. The editor for already-uploaded videos is staying around (the "adjustments" editor).
-
@jazzyjosh said in YouTube's new logo:

They should probably mention that somewhere, because just two weeks ago when I tried to use it there was nothing. (It just plain didn't work, because apparently YouTube forgot a feature of their site uses Flash.)
@lb_ said in YouTube's new logo:

Ah that makes more sense. Yes I was trying to use the "adjustments" editor, which is broken in Google's own browser.

A couple of weeks ago, I was writing some subtitles for a video. I put some effort into them, and was trying to make them funny and entertaining. Took me a couple of hours. I was also browsing another site, which managed to crash Chrome right after I finished. Good thing it autosaves, right? Psych! It actually reset half the subtitle blocks to their original location, and moved the text of every subtitle block about four blocks forwards. Completely unsalvageable. Fuck YouTube online editors.

@pie_flavor If only YouTube had gotten that genius Jeff Atwood to work on their webapps!

Soon enough you'll be down to a classic green or yellow terminal, then?

216 colours ought to be enough for anyone. Hell if YouTube is using FF0000 then they are using one of them!
