Java version weirdness

  • This is what I got when trying to use ICE's web trading platform.

    Doesn't Java have a way to determine it's version number?

  • Isn't java 1.4 incompatible with 1.5 and higher?

    And java 1.7 is only in preview... maybe using an none-beta version would help?

  • @_bugmenot_ said:

    Clearly it does, since they detected your version number.

  • @Daid said:

    There are some incompatabilities, but for the most part Java binaries created by 1.4 should function in 5 and higher.

    Oooh, let's all criticize his choice of image format next!  I'll start!

    This should be in PNG because I am an obsessive-compulsive autistic with no friends!

    We always criticize the format, I'm sick of it.  Let's question the color depth instead.

    That's stupid, pesto. I mean, storing data (colors) in the title tag is an awesome idea, but

    1. The thing has no DOCTYPE.
    2. Script tags without the type attribute. Are you kidding me?
    3. THERE'S NOT EVEN A TITLE TAG! SERIOUSLY??
    Oh, and don't send anyone the codez...

    Edit: And I'm missing a "zoom out" function.

    Opera 10: Loaded in 20 seconds, with my slow uplink being the bottleneck. About 25 MB of memory usage increase. Opened the source after 5 secs of full CPU load.

    Let's be honest; Firefox sucks. Yeah, I sigh after few of the extensions... but I din't miss them enough to ignore the crappiness of FF as a whole... or maybe i should say whale?

    You think Firefox is bad with that one? You should see what happens when you use absolutely-positioned DIVs.  Compare that with the same image built with a table.

  •  The real WTF is that twitpic doesn't host there own pictures, but depend on Amazon AWS to deliver them, so if your security conscious and block cross site requets, you don't see any pictures!

    Additionally, twitpic is blocked at work due to social networking.  Photobucket, flickr, and imageshack are not.

    err, FTFY.  I don't know how his post got by my pedantry parser, but yours just tweaked it enough.

    FTFTFTFYFYFY.  Because your pedantry parser's broken.  Either twitpic is plural, or it is singular.  Personally, I don't care which it is - I could see arguments for either way (unless it's entirely run by a single admin, who owns the domain, and it's hosted on a single server.)

    To be fair, webkit (Safari/Chrome) also suck at this. IE8 is really fast, but doesn't display the whole "image."

    Personally, I'll use Firefox and the nifty extensions and take a pass on the stupid HTML tricks.

    God knows I don't need any actual features in my browser, nope, just the ability for it to render thousands of 1px table cells really quickly!

    Seriously, just give up the pretense of having a worthwhile life and switch to Lynx on X-less Gentoo.  It handles tables really quickly which will come in handy when your imaginary stripper/HTML-guru girlfriend sends you table-encoded photos of her and her sorority girlfriends engaging in topless pillow fights.  It's not like CSS support matters because imaginary people don't show up in color anyway.

    FTFY.  The problem is that Java does not have a version number.  It has a version identifier, which as your example shows, is sometimes not very numeric.  As such, its version checking tends to leave out important options.  This is an issue which plagues a great many software titles.

    That's what I was thinking. And I went with plural because Mole had 2 words in plural, but only 1 in singular. Simple majority decision.

    Actually, I moved to Opera after years of using ELinks (WITH rudimentary CSS support since quite some time, and JS support since a short while*!) on a X-less system. No, it wasn't Gentoo, I'm afraid...

    <FONT SIZE="1">* Might actually be year or more... I have problems with keeping track of time...

    ... and I'm not pretending that I have a life... I'm a bad liar.

    Ah, yes. I remember when Flash 10 came out, broke a lot of crappy version-detection scripts. Since, you now, testing for version.substring(0, 1) when the number is 10 doesn't really work.

  •  This is not a new problem.

    [quote user="Raymond Chen"]

     Version numbers. Very important. And so many people check them wrong.

    This is why Windows 95's GetVersion function returned 3.95 instead of 4.0. A lot of code checked the version number like this:

      UINT Ver = GetVersion();
    UINT MajorVersion = LOBYTE(uVer);
    UINT MinorVersion = HIBYTE(uVer);
    if (MajorVersion < 3 || MinorVersion < 10) {
    Error("This program requires Windows 3.1");
    }

    Now consider what happens when the version number is reported as 4.0. The major version check passes, but the minor version check fails since 0 is less than 10.

    This bug was so rife that we gave up shimming every app that had the problem and just decided, "Fine. If anybody asks, say that the Windows version is 3.95."

    I suspect this is also why DirectX always reports its version as 4.x.

    FTFTFTFYFYFY.  Because your pedantry parser's broken.  Either twitpic is plural, or it is singular of unknown gender, in which case "their" would be appropriate.  Personally, I don't care which it is - I could see arguments for either way (unless it's entirely run by a single admin, who owns the domain, and it's hosted on a single server.)
    FTFY.  Do you want to discuss which gender twitpic is?  because I'm pretty sure retards don't officially have a gender.
