Results of Dangerous Experimentation

If you've participated in the Dangerous Experimentation thread, I'd like to hear more about what you've learned from your engagement with the other side.
Images of cute animals are completely optional. There's no floof tax here.
EDIT for blakeyrat: If what you've learned is "Nothing.", you don't need to reply as that was the expected result.

am i doing it right?
-
@accalia Well, given that floof is entirely optional here, you're certainly not doing it wrong. But did you participate in the Dangerous Experimentation thread, and, if so, do you have any insights you've gained that you want to share with us?
-
@antiquarian said in Results of Dangerous Experimentation:
But did you participate in the Dangerous Experimentation thread
not really. i think i posted a picture in the thread then wandered off for a while. when i came back it was talking about politics so my automute self preservation routines cut in and i muted it. Not because the content of the thread was bad per se but because the subject matter is about as stable as azidoazide azide, and has a similar reaction when it decomposes as well.
I too am curious as to the results of the experiment.
-
@accalia said in Results of Dangerous Experimentation:
about boring US politics
-
@accalia Everyone has been civil so far, but it seems like they are still talking past each other. On the other hand, at least it gives everyone the opportunity to have their say without being flamed for it.
-
@antiquarian Honestly, I feel like that only happened in the last 12 hours or so. Up until then I felt like there was more engagement between the participants.
-
I'm sad now. It went about as well as I could have hoped, though.
-
@yamikuronue At least you tried.
-
@antiquarian Yeah, honestly, I'm happy with the thread, I just...
It doesn't help that a lot of shit's going on in my personal life this week. I'm feeling really lonely and wounded in general right now, and having a reminder that some people I like will never accept me is like salt in the wound, you know? That's the other half of why I don't go in the garage: so I can pretend I belong better than I do.
-

I know how you feel, but unfortunately it's a part of life. You did what you could, and you should be commended for reaching out in the first place.
-
@antiquarian I know it is. But it sucks. You know?

Anyway, my feelings aside, the real result of dangerous experimentation is coming Real Soon Now, watch this space, etc etc
I don't have @Boomzilla 's access to make it so, though, so he controls the timeline.
-
@antiquarian I still think Boomzilla's basically a nazi. Or a royalist. Or a royalist nazi, is that a thing?
I stopped posting because it's really hard to attach images from my laptop either at home when it's on my bed stand and I don't have a mouse or at work where I don't want to be seen Googling got fuzzy dogs.
-
@yamikuronue said in Results of Dangerous Experimentation:
some people I like will never accept me
Hmm...I suspect that those people have a different conception of what's going on, though I understand that you've had experience where people said similar things but didn't appear to really mean it, so I can understand what you're saying here.
OK, let's remove the "sin" part and just consider some objectionable choice. We can imagine that these things are on a spectrum from "meh" to "Literally Hitler." Quick list to give an idea (obviously not exhaustive or linear or even necessarily in order):
- Leaves toilet seat up
- Talks in a movie theater
- Smokes
- Parks in a handicap spot illegally
- Shoplifts
- Votes
- Drives drunk
- Domestic abuse
- Rapist
- Murderer
So, somewhere along there you're going to decide that you don't accept the person and can't be friends. I think most people's will be different and even their implementation of "hate the act love the actor" will be different. Some people will have things on the list that don't exist on other people's list (obviously, that's the case we're discussing now).
Then we get to the case of, "I think this is better / best / good" and "I think this is worst / worse / bad" from a personal point of view. Sometimes that's projected as judgment on others, sometimes others perceive it as that (and maybe it is and maybe it isn't).
Very difficult to discuss those sorts of things intellectually without taking personal insult, whether or not such intent was present. And individuals will have very different capacities and interest in doing so.

@blakeyrat said in Results of Dangerous Experimentation:

Fascinating, as my self perception is totally opposite of both of those things, so I really wonder how that perception was formed.

No floofs required here. I also disagree that he's in the wrong thread, though I think what he posted would be helpful in both places.

@boomzilla Nazi = extreme authoritarian + that special extra blend of plain cruelty. (For example, wanting the Seattle $15 minimum wage to fail just because you don't want anybody to get more money.)
Royalist because you want to encourage policies that let the rich get richer and fuck everybody else. Which means you're a good fit for 2017 America, which seems to be completely oriented around that concept.
I was actually just talking with Ben L yesterday or the day before about the difference between Trump and Pence. It's not like they vary highly in views, it's that Trump is cruel, just plain mean whenever he can get away with it, and all his beliefs/actions are maximized around being able to inflict maximum cruelty. Pence strikes me as a guy who genuinely believes he knows the better philosophy of life. I disagree 100% with both their counter-productive stupid ideas, but at least Pence isn't cruel.
There's a difference between "I'm a conservative because I genuinely think it will improve the country" and "I'm a conservative because it allows me to be cruel to people". There's a difference between people who get wealthy, then use the money to do things they genuinely think will improve the world, like Gates, Buffet and Elon Musk, and "got mine fuck you". You can guess which group I think Boomzilla occupies.

Nothing about that describes me or my opinion about the Seattle $15 minimum wage, which is ironically itself more authoritarian than I like in my economic policies.

Nothing about that describes me either, except that I'm opposed to policies whose goals are to prevent "the rich get[ting] richer" for that purpose or that will also harm others.
However, I think this is an excelent example of my first post in the experimentation thread:

Well, a negative result (he hasn't learned a thing) is a result if you want to be a about it, but that wasn't really what I had in mind when I started the thread.
-
@antiquarian said in Results of Dangerous Experimentation:

That's not what it says in the first post.
But fine whatever, ignore.

-
@antiquarian That's exactly the question I answered. If that's not an answer you "like", sorry? But you're changing the rules in the middle of the thread and you can't expect people to run a relay race over a crumbling bridge.
-
@blakeyrat Fine, I'll edit the OP.
-
@antiquarian Oh good, edit the OP to say "blakeyrat's a dumb shit moron idiot." Not enough threads contained that content.
The answer I gave wasn't "nothing". If I meant to answer "nothing" I would have typed the word "nothing." I did not. "Blakeyrat's not saying the answer I wanted so I'm just going to discount everything he did say and claim he said nothing, hello I'm in the world's biggest asshole!" Would have saved both our time if you'd just started the thread with "hey if your name's blakeyrat I'm going to be a huge asshole to you" in the first fucking place.
Whatever, fuck all this.

I'm still reading, but I find that I actually agree with @blakeyrat . Again. And this time without having to filter away all the vitriol, which made for a nice change.
If it's not too late when I come to the end of the thread, I may chime in with some observations re healthcare.

I'd like to thank @Yamikuronue for starting the thread - I didn't participate much in the political discussions (see note on mobile floof tax above, and I'm almost always mobile :P ) but I really appreciate the discussion and the fact that most of the discussion was very civil. I see we've made a new category - hopefully we can have good discussions on these issues without all the flames.
Thanks @Yamikuronue!

I too am curious as to the results of the experiment.
" 'Due to their behavior during the process of synthesis, it was obvious that the sensitivities (of these compounds) will be not less than extreme. . .
The sensitivity of C2N14 is beyond our capabilities of measurement. The smallest possible loadings in shock and friction tests led to explosive decomposition. . .'Yep, below the detection limits of a lab that specializes in the nastiest, most energetic stuff they can think up."
Sounds about right. [Sounds like the type of thing Yazeran would've been interested in.]

@yamikuronue I feel like at least some forum-goers got to learn about possible shared values with other forum members that they wouldn't normally have seen.

That, in reference to gays or any other so-called "alternative lifestyle", is the problem, not whether said person finds anything to be within their so-called acceptable level of objectionableness. It belies a fundamental disagreement about the nature of humanity.

sounds like a lot of work for mods. must require floof.
Also, automatically replace anytime someone says nazi, right-wing, left-wing, liberal, fascist, conservative, BLM, antifa, white supremacist, racist, lgbtq, etc with a purple unicorn instead, so you can't tell which side is being complained about.

@yamikuronue the purple unicorns rounded up all the purple unicorns and put them in purple unicorns, where they would eventually be purple unicorned to death.
actually... i think that's more offensive than leaving the real words in....
-
@darkmatter Thanks, now I got my wires crossed and tried to type "purple unicorn" instead of "discord" into windows' search bar.

@yamikuronue you're purple unicorn.
