I need 10 hours of sleep each night, do I have a disability?

So most people sleep about 8 hours, that's considered the "standard" amount of sleep. Some people (Bill Clinton famously) get by on 5-6 hours of sleep.
I need closer to 9.5-10 hours of sleep to function. If I get "only" 8 hours, I'm barely functional.
I realized this when I complained to my friend about my commute, and he's like "well even if you spent 10 hours doing work-stuff, you still have 6 hours free to do whatever" but the thing is: I don't. Because I need to sleep more than he does.
Do I have a disability?
If so, how do I get paid for it?

@cartman82 If I were just lazy, I'd spend that 2 extra hours a day playing video gamez. Lazy people don't want to spend all their time asleep, they just don't want to work.
I am definitely slack, but I wouldn't call myself lazy.

Sleep demands vary wildly. For many years I could get by on 4-6 (often on the low end) for extended runs. No longer.
Yet I have a problem seeing either variance as a "disability" [now if you said you needed 12-16 and had medical support for that, it would be different]

IMO 8 hours is the most an adult should need to sleep per night. Most people I know (including me) are fine with 6-7 hours.

Seconding these. Or it could be chronic fatigue. If it's any of the above you might be able to either fix the problem or get accommodations made

I can park like an asshole somewhere and the old lady on a walker can ask me "what's your disability?" and I'll say "I sleep 10 hours a night", then punch her. True story: if you have a park like an asshole tag, you can punch whoever you want consequence-free. I heard it somewhere.

:) You have it backwards.... The extra sleep is lowering the time you can spend money. Back in the day [remember I am no longer in NYC, and have not been in years], only sleeping 4 hours a night meant a lot more time spending money. :) :) :)

Do I have a disability?
No. That's just how you are. Some people need more, some need less.
However: If you have sleep apnea, that could mean that you just aren't getting good sleep, and if you were to treat it you could probably feel much better with less sleep than now.

Back when I had no responsibilities I would sleep 12 hours a day every day, if I got up before I had 12 hours of sleep I would feel exhausted and barely able to function.
Now I generally sleep for 5-6 hours on weekdays and play catch-up on the weekends. I found if I sleep 8+ hours on a weekday I generally feel worse off than if I sleep 6-7.
On weekends though I usually sleep for 10-12 hours.

I had a roommate who sometimes would sleep for 2 days straight. I heard after graduation he saw some doctors, diet and medication for fat cells in the blood, and now he has lost weight and is healthy with normal sleep.

@blakeyrat You should talk to your doctor about this. There are some diseases that really do cause you to need more sleep, and they are arguably a disability.

Suggesting that he might have other disabilities or conditions or how any of them might be remedied is therefore unsolicited (unless remedying that condition would result in him getting paid).

My sleep schedule has been generally fucked in various ways for quite a while. But I do know of a way to fix it: go live in the wild, away from electric lights, for a week or two. This should reveal your natural sleep patterns.

I can do okay with 7 or so hours a night, for months at a time. I can do somewhat okay with 4-5 hours for months at a time, but I do eventually burn out. I don't like sleeping more than 8 unless I'm sick. Sometimes I've slept in for 10 or 12 hours (or more), but it always messes up my sleep rhythm.

Well, that, and the fact that I have always felt like my family was railroading me into this whole SSD application thing. I really don't want to go through with it, but realistically, I don't see an alternative. The fact that they are absolutely right only makes me feel worse about it.
