Goodbye

  • Winner of the 2016 Presidential Election

Before anyone starts wondering in a few weeks or so: I've decided to leave this forum. I've had a lot of great and interesting interactions here, but in the end I spend way too much time here doing one of the following:

    • Losing sleep arguing with someone who's more interested in trolling than having an actual conversation. It would be nice to have serious conversations with people who have different political views from time to time, but I've come to realize that this is nearly impossible on this forum. Every time an interesting conversation develops (yes, they exist, even in the garage) someone destroys it after less than 12 hours.
    • Reading stories about how much people hate their jobs and this industry. It's important to vent and a lot of these stories are funny. However, I've noticed that I have slowly started to hate my profession. Not my job in particular, but this industry in general. This is not exactly a healthy attitude towards the profession you'll probably have for the rest of your life.
    • Getting trolled by professionals. It can be fun from time to time, but it has made me become an asshole to the people around me IRL, since I've started to accept this as a normal form of human interaction. And I don't want this development to continue.

For these reasons, I'll delete my password from the database now. I was using a throwaway email anyway, so I will not be able to restore it.

I'm not posting this to get a particular response, I simply think that leaving a community I've been interacting with as much as I have with you without an explanation would be rude. I will not be reading the replies to this post. I'm definitely curious what the reactions to this post will be and whether they're mostly negative or positive, but I have to quit cold turkey now.

    Thanks for all the fish!

  • FoxDev

It's a shame to see you go 😿

  • Dupa

Cheers, matey. Hope it gets better for you, once you have left. 🙂

  • BINNED

Darn it, I liked him, too!

Hope you could still hit us up on IRC or something from time to time at least, for old time's sake and all. Also, dick jokes.

Either way, good luck in whatever you get yourself into. And if you want to take an advice from this idiot: Never grow up, never surrender! :P

  • I survived the hour long Uno hand

Shame about bullets one and three. I feel the same a lot of the time. Ah well.

  • BINNED

That's too bad. See you in 6 months with a different name :P

Bullet 1 is somewhat ok depending on what the topic is, how far it drifts and whether certain people have joined the thread.

Bullet 3, completely agree and it's one of the reasons my interactions are somewhat limited around here, and why I take breaks from time to time because there are parts of this community that are somewhat toxic (like in any community) and even with the Garage segregating most of it, it's still not 100% non toxic elsewhere. The principle problem seems to be the people who must be right at any cost, and the resulting splash damage.

    Don't kid yourself.

Since this is not in the Lounge, you will definitely lurk this thread and see what people have to say.

That said, TDWTF is best done in moderation. But if you can't self-moderate, going cold turkey is a solution too.

It's why we locked them in the garage.

You just need to avoid the temptation to go there and check what they're saying.

  • @anonymous234 the Garage definitely mitigated a lot of the problem, but not all of it and what didn't get mitigated can become quite toxic in its own way.

  • @arantor
So you're saying the Garage wasn't good enough at sorting out the fruits and nuts? 🤔

I think we have a job for @cartman82's job candidates! 🍹

I never go in the garage. I mute threads outside the garage all the time for toxicity and borderline-garage behavior.

  • @yamikuronue this is exactly what I mean. There's plenty that is indisputably Garage, but the borderline is something that puts people off at different places and different rates.

There are certain people that if they visit a thread, even if the first post is innocuous enough, will eventually become frustrating reading for me.

  • I survived the hour long Uno hand

@arantor It doesn't help that some people like to tempt fate. Some posts get muted at the OP because I just know it's garage-bait and someone's going to bite.

  • Fake News

Personally, I think the Garage is a perfectly cromulent attempt to mitigate the trollery. There will always be gr[a|e]y areas that cause the troll factor of some threads to be subjective for one group of people or another. Heavy-handed moderation would only kill the forum entirely after some time.

  • FoxDev

    @yamikuronue said in Goodbye:

I mute threads outside the garage all the time for toxicity and borderline-garage behavior.

i estimate i mute one in three new threads, some authors get more lienency than others. Regular denizens of the cesspit are on a hair trigger, though long time trolls such as @pjh and @Polygeekery tend to have a bit more rope to play with as they are pretty good about keeping questionable content in the garage too.

I've even muted most of the megathreads because they strayed into that territory and there's no actual UI to easily see what threads you have explicitly muted in NodeBB so unless i remember what they are and in what category they were in i can't find them to unmute them (not that i bother of course, that's effort)

But yeah. the only reasons i'm still here are:

    • The Accalia goes insane thread
    • The pornNSFW thread (@Perverted_Vixen reads that one and gets "ideas" from it, i like to have warning about her "ideas" before she tries them on me without warning.)
    • The Sekret PM club

    Please don't.

You do realize WTDWTF is like one of the last places I know where the very conservative and the very liberal can cohabitate and grate against each other in a semi-civilized manner.

These days, everyone is moving into their own corner and taking their toys with them. Things becoming more and more extreme in both camps. It's kind of depressing for sort of a centrist like myself.

Even if you mute threads and ignore 90% of what the other side is saying, it's better than contributing to the splintering.

People are under the impression in general that our industry, which appears to be growing rapidly and making lots of money, is healthy. The more they deny reality, the worse it will get.

I think that's part of the "disagree without being disagreeable" thing. I don't think anyone here thinks you shouldn't exist; they believe that certain things you agree with are incorrect, and that many of the more prominent people advocating (and particularly acting upon) those ideas shouldn't exist because they're actively causing harm to people. But there's a huge gulf between that and "everyone who likes these ideas is someone I hate and they shouldn't exist."
