@ben_lubar's internet is getting suspiciously bad

My internet plan is 12 Mbps down, 1.5 Mbps up, which AT&T's website denies the existence of, saying they only provide "up to 25 Mbps" for my house and no other speeds.
In the last day, my latency on GW2 has spiked from 150ms (moderately uncomfortable) to 400+ms (physically painful).
I decided to do some speed tests (I'm on the Gunnar's Hold world, which is in the Frankfurt data center).
And just for a control group, here's a closer Germany:
And here's what happens if my ISP can't detect that I'm doing a speed test (this connection goes straight to Google with no unencrypted traffic that could tell my ISP that it was a speed test as opposed to anything else):
Here's a screenshot of GW2, which I've left running in a pretty empty area without pushing any buttons while I wrote this post:
As a side note, it seems like AT&T really don't want people to be able to find out what upload speed their users should be getting. I couldn't find it by searching their website - I had to Google it and go to a page that looked like it was last updated in the 1990s.
AT&T also has a speed test on their website. Let's see what it says.
Am I witnessing Net Neutrality dying?

Aren't you in or near a major city?
I'm in a small town and I had DSL for the last 4 years that was consistently 25-27mbps and just switched to 70mbps cable.

Crap, even @ben_lubar's got better internet than me.

@ben_lubar
Your speedtests to AT&T's server stay (1) in their network and (2) on the North American continent. It's 0.00000% surprising that you get lower results across the trans-Atlantic cables.Which is not to say there may or may not be problems with AT&T's peerings to other providers filling up as well. But there's no NN weirdness happening here.
-
@ben_lubar Call them on the telephono and complain. Wheels without squeak get no greaze.

That definitely explains why the Google-provided HTTPS speed test to the second-closest major city to me gave me 2.39/0.84 whereas the one that was over unencrypted HTTP to a New Jersey server owned by my ISP gave me 15.41/1.31.

Apparently they're no longer offering the "Premier" tier, so it must be something between 100 mbps and 300 mbps "max"
Oh! I managed to find Cox's "new" speed test (the old one was flash-based and Chrome wouldn't even pop a notification to enable it this time)
Apparently we're supposed to be at 150 Mbps.
Sorely lacking, I'd say...

Yes, there is definitely a "specifc In-Home issue": We're paying $15 per mbit and there's NOBODY ELSE THAT WANTS TO DO BETTER!

Shit! It just got worse!
We're being marked!
-

AT&T charges $10 per 50GB if you go over the 1TB monthly limit, so 1TB costs $50.09 and 2TB costs $254.80.

.... Don't you have to be maxing out your connection at advertised speeds to exceed that though?
Actually, checking.....
Technically, if you were maxing out your connection 24/7, you would get to 1 Tb in just under 9 days (8 days, 21 hours).
Good to know if we ever need to restore our source control from the cloud, we'll be out a whole week+...
-
@tsaukpaetra 12Mbps is roughly 4TB per month

Oh, no, there's a loyalty discount that applies of 0%.

Out of curiosity, I decided to run this at work.
Pretty sure Atlanta is on a different continent. I guess we have a pretty decent connection here? (This was via the Google Fiber speed test, couldn't find the other one...)
-
@cvi The other one you can reach by typing "speed test" into Google.
(I saw this in one of @ben_lubar's screenshots).
-
@zecc Saw it too, and tried it. Didn't get the popup that Ben seemed to get. I just get the standard search page with the first hit being the thing by Ookla. Searching for "speed test google" gave me the Google Fiber thing as the first hit instead (but still no popup).
Maybe it's a Chrome only thing? Haven't got that installed here, though.

Nope. I got that in Firefox. I think Google just doesn't like you.

Sadly, that only works if AT&T has some sort of incentive to do a better job.

I tested with Google then Ookla and finally Verizon. Google's test was a bit slower (~10% - even downloading from Frankfurt was faster!). My upload speed to Frankfurt dropped about 85% compared to local servers. Upload was the same across Ookla, Verizon and Google (for local servers).
-
that's......... WHAT?!
let's check what my router thinks is going on.......
yeah that's about what i expected.... pay for the best service possible get..... where's my 150/15? oh 70/7 is what i get? ...... TWC (Now Spectrum) are arseholes.

@zecc If I disable the country redirect, it seems to work.
Guess morning is officially over, now everybody is here clogging the lines. ;-)

@cvi said in @ben_lubar's internet is getting suspiciously bad:

Oh, TIL. Nice, thanks!
Mmmm how come most of the pictures posted here show an upload significantly greater than the download? (I also get 100 Mbps/down, 200 Mpbs/up)
I thought most connections were asymmetrical? Is that a thing of the past?
-
@remi
My guess would be that Google's speedtest servers are overloaded and maxing out its upload, but the number of people who have really asymmetric connections (cable, DSL, etc where their download is much higher than their upload) is high enough that the download to Google's speedtest server isn't overfilling.
-
@remi said in @ben_lubar's internet is getting suspiciously bad:

Mine is supposed to be symmetrical. That may be a fiber specific thing. The upload in my tests was ~10% faster than downloads.
-
This post is deleted!
-
@boomzilla Oh that's right, fiber is supposed to be symmetrical (I think?) and is becoming more common. Plus, I guess a lot of people are actually testing their office connection rather than home (I know that I did...), and are therefore more likely to be on a symmetrical one.
(in my case, I think that what I am testing are the various bottlenecks between me and Google rather than what our ISP provides, because I know that my employer has a very beefy connection and I have seen bigger throughputs in transfers between e.g. one of our offices and a client's)

That's insane
http://i.imgur.com/UN9VIEI.pngI'm frequently over 3TB in a month. Hell, I went over 4TB a couple of times back when I was on 25mbps DSL.

@cvi Just disabling redirect didn't work for me, I had to also use a private tab, because I was logged in to my google account. But then I found a link in that about page, that list not only the speed test, but a bunch of different ones.

Curious. I didn't have any problems, despite being logged into my google account. (OTOH, Google is a bit confused about which location my account should be bound to, so maybe that's the reason.)

-
From the NodeBB offices... not bad, could be worse. We're actually paying to 120mbps down, but given that my home internet caps out at 20, I'll take what I can get. I thought cable was supposed to have better upload
-
@julianlam said in @ben_lubar's internet is getting suspiciously bad:

Yes, but typically that's shared on the same line, an argument "for" DSL that annoys me to no end.
Sure, with DSL you're getting a "dedicated" connection, but if it's ten to a hundred times slower what's the point?
Things have gotten way better with fiber, but almost nobody is really gunning for the infrastructure improvements needed.
-
There are multiple excellent fiber (fibre? whichever, the one that doesn't make you go to the bathroom) providers in Toronto... although they build out their own networks so if it isn't hooked up, you're in the dark... and seeing as we're in a small 10-20 unit building, we're definitely in the dark
