McAfee is STILL on my shit list

Re: McAfee is still on my shit list.
Having just bought a refurbished Acer computer with billed as FREE McAfee anti-virus software I tried to uninstall same when it ran out. Unfortunately hand in hand with Acer it cannot be uninstalled, to do so will freeze your computer although it can be de-activated, remaining an unknown impediment to further AV programs or general health of your machine. And yes I tried the Acer help line and they confirmed this. So Acer also joins my permanent shitlist along with McAfee.

@accalia No, that's Step three.
Step One: Go to the website for the laptop and download all the drivers for the correct OS.
Step Two: Put said drivers on a USB drive.

@sloosecannon Hey, isn't Acer one of those companies that detect if you're running a virgin Windows install and use Systems Management Mode to inject an in-BIOS copy of the McAfee installer into it?
@accalia Hey, isn't Acer one of those companies that ship with instrumented Secure Boot turned on and freak out if you try to turn it off to install real OS's?
Hey, aren't computers amazing nowadays? It's like they took lessons from the printer and software companies: even if you buy it, you don't really own it.

fuck if i know. i don't buy acer because they've pulled shit like this in the past. i buy hardware that goes "you want a real OS? that's cool can i help?" and "Oh, you want to put a virgin install of windows on here? i'll get out of your way and let you do that"
and yes, there are still companies that do that, if you take the time to look for them.
SO NYA! :-P

The video I posted actually has some good (maybe) tidbits.
I assume you've already tried this?
Wow mcafee has some ugly urls.
Step 2: Download and run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR)

if your hardware requires drivers that windows can't find via windows update then you need to install a real os. cause the drivers you get from the manufacturer are shit and completely untrustworthy.
so either buy hardware that can accept a pure virgin install of windows or get the @Perverted_Vixen of OSes instead.
neither statement was false. the information available for both statements was merely different.
:-P

@dangeruss I used that removal tool successfully when I was at my relatives' house fixing their computers.

-
@accalia For some strange reason, Windows has a nasty tendency to not have drivers shipped with it for hardware released after it was.
And lets not go into the "quality" of some of the drivers you download from Windows Update.

Otoh, I have installed Linux Mint with Secure Boot enabled on my HP work laptop without it freaking out. The only issue with it is that I have to press F9 while booting to get the EFI boot menu and select the OS from that one, or it will for some reason try to run a non-working copy of Grub.

Sounds like an incorrect BIOS setting. Maybe you have to disable "Legacy BIOS" mode somewhere.

Edit: Subtract Gentoo from it as well. It takes far too much time to get a working OS with that.

@accalia said in McAfee is STILL on my shit list:
Here's a penny young-un. Go find yourself a real OS
Why not just buy real hardware that comes with a real OS ?
Then, of course, wipe Ubuntu and put Mint/CentOS/Debian
