Why is the number of times you can get a password wrong before the account is locked always an odd number?
-
It's one of those things you never think about until someone points it out to you.
-
@raceprouk It's not. I've seen 10 in a million places.
Why are cats always purple guyz you never think about until someone points it out to you that cats are purple 100% of the time this question certainly reflects reality.
-
I guess I don't make enough typos to ever find out. I've only been locked out of an account once in my memory.

well.....
2) they aren't. it's six here at work and 10 in our CMS. it seems to be 4 for my laptop using fingerprint identification, since if it fails a read 4 times it forces me to use my password instead.
4) the common value ofthe one less than four but more than two
is chosen because once might be a mistake and so might twice butthe one less than four but more than two
times is.... well i guess that's the minimum you can get away with without sounding paranoid.
6) then we generalize to larger numbers by adding 2 far more easily than we just pick a value that makes sense for the use case
8)Then security cargo culting takes over and decides that odd numbers must be more secure and changing your password every month must be too, leading to situations where you have just forced the entire company to write their current password down on a scrap of paper so they can log in successfully in the morning
10) ..... Where did my odd numbers go?

TIL 10 is an odd number. I guess it is kind of odd that they'd allow 10 times.
i'm sure this was 'd

@accalia since when is "one" not an odd number?

@accalia since when is "one" not an odd number?
when it's referring to an item rather than counting a number.
One
is a number,the one
is referring to a discrete set of items (typically of size one, but can be larger if the group of items is being mentioned rather than their members) This is a distinct usage of the word to mean something other than a number, though of course the concept of quantity is not wholly divorced from the word in this usage.so NYA! :-P

@raceprouk Simple logic: Prime numbers are used in security algorithms. That means prime numbers are more secure. All prime numbers greater than 2 are odd. That means odd numbers are safer.

@karla I'm actually shocked and amazed Super Sonic Fan hasn't posted some joke about Big the Cat yet. Who is a purple cat (well "cat"), but I didn't remember that until after I made that dumb joke.
-
@blakeyrat Honestly, that thought hadn't occurred to me. I was going to post a pic of Blaze somewhere, but then I got distracted and did something else instead.
Anyway, here's a purple cat on skis holding a gun:
-
@raceprouk See I also thought Blaze was supposed to be pink but as a man the whole "purple/pink" continuum kind of eludes me entirely.
Either way she never wears skis.
She looks slightly more than a cat like Big the Cat though. Slightly.

She does in the Winter Olympics games.

She's from the post apocalyptic future full of lava and flames that doesn't even seem to have liquid water, much less snow, but she's somehow an expert Olympic-level skier. Makes sense.

purple is what "manly men" call pink when they want to wear it but aren't confident enough in their "masculinity" to call it pink, so they call it purple because it's "safer"
Look you "manly" "men", we know the code. you're not fooling anyone. also we don't care. if you want to wear pink you want o wear pink. so wear pink and anyone who tells you you shouldn't you can, and should, tell to fuck right off.
-
@accalia Men in Seattle wear pink all the time. It kind of weirds me out.

@accalia Do you feel the same way about utilikilts?
BTW PJH "oh mans this is off-topic Blakeyrat must be about to post meme cartoons or whatever!" but look no I'm not because the new topic is more fun to discuss than the old one, which was based on a completely stupid and wrong premise anyway.

you want to wear a utilikilt, be my flipping guest.
as long as you maintain a level of skin coverage that society and situation consider appropriate, whatever you choose to wear is fine by me.
-
@accalia You should come to Seattle, the pink shirt and utilikilt capital of the world.

I was long skeptical of the modern kilt.
And then I bought one. Ho. Lee. Fuck. You know how you wear shorts when pants wouldn't be comfortable? Shorts are an utterly inadequate compromise.
The one and only problem I have is that the supplied pockets on the brand I bought are utterly useless.

Purple is a fully saturated color that can't be produced by monochromatic light. Pink is just red+white.
-
@blakeyrat Fantastic. But if you're not a shorts guy (I probably wouldn't be in Seattle's weather either) it's probably not for you.
I bought a kilt on the recommendation of a fellow racecar driver who, quite notoriously, wears a kilt at the track literally all the time (including when he's hanging upside down welding something on someone else's car).
Why would he recommended such a thing? A bunch of us were standing around having the traditional complaint fest about chafed thighs, stanky butt sweat and general discomfort that comes with a summer weekend spent at the track. The usual "yeah man baby powder makes it all better!" line was making the rounds. Which is a lie, by the way.
Then this guy points out that simple ventilation makes the problems go away.
He's fucking right.

@hungrier It's far from the most distressing think you're likely to see on any given weekend.

I like purple. I have a shitload of purple stuff in my house. I don't have any problem with pink from a "manly man" perspective, I just don't like it. They are clearly different colours, although there are shades that are judgement calls between them, similar to red and orange.

I'm actually quite puzzled at exactly how they managed to make them this useless.
When I get home I'll have to illustrate.
-
@weng I don't think you need to XD I have bought pants that turned out to have entirely fake pockets Like, the top of a pocket with no actual pocket.
-
@yamikuronue No, this is different. They intentionally included pockets that appear to be very useful and a close analog of actual pants.
But they somehow made them utterly and completely useless.

@weng Womens' clothing often has pockets that are only deep enough to fit a quarter into.
(I know from female relatives)

I don't think the first part is compatible with the second part, if worn in the (apocryphally?) correct manner in the US.
