    @yamikuronue
    As brain-dead easy as federation is to set up (there's a very simple setting for let anyone federate with me, and a slightly less simple setting to only whitelist certain domains in), I'm surprised that they didn't get Skype working instead of falling back to GTM.

    Though getting Skype screen sharing working cross-network can be substantially more complicated (like all things SIP through a firewall), so yeah...

    Skype screen sharing

    I've yet to see this work well in any set-up, regardless of whether it's Skype Skype or Lync Skype.

  • I survived the hour long Uno hand

    @raceprouk
    It works great (once you get the firewall issues taken care of). Allows for remote control ala TeamViewer, allows remote clients to connect via a web client with just a magic link (no username/password/registration) -- though that limits your ability to do escalated things on their computer via remote control, and does require an additional download if they're letting you remote control them.

    It's just.... kind of picky (aka, SIP) to get set up the first time. If you are in a position to follow the Microsoft recommendation of "no NAT for external facing Skype stuff", it reduces the setup complexity by about 95%.

  • @raceprouk it still works better than Slack screen sharing or ScreenHero.

  • Minor WTF of the day: Currently installing browsers on my Surfaces for school. I'm giving my pupils the choice between Opera, Edge, Chrome and Firefox.

    You know about those popup pages / tabs / dialogs you get when you first install a browser? Like: "Oy, nice you're here! Make me your default NOW!" or "Please login. Please please please!"

    Opera: Had zero of that shit. No landing page, no popup, nothing. Just unadulterated bliss of getting to browse without crap interruptions immediately after installation. No surprises after second launch of browser.
    Edge: Had a landing tab once (1) after first launch of the browser. Reasonable. No surprises after second launch of browser.
    Firefox: Had a landing tab once and the "Make me default!" popup. Reasonable, considering that Edge only didn't have that because it was already set as default. No surprises after second launch of browser.

    Then there's Chrome, which is ... special. You get a whole page upon launch only dedicated on how to make Chrome the default. If you then start Chrome again, you get a whole page dedicated on "Please login to your Google account!" If you then restart you get a banner on top of the page: "Chrome isn't the default, please fix!"

    Basically, you have to restart Chrome four (4) times to make sure that there are no annoying pages, popups or banners.

    Geeze,

  • @rhywden said in WTF Bites:

    Edge doesn't need to make itself the default because every Windows interface has a button specifically bound to "open Edge with a useless Bing search".

    Our iPad we use for testing in the office just turned into a bell. When connected to the MacBook, it starts connecting and disconnecting in quick succession, accompanying each with the chime. Obviously that means it won't charge and we can't push the application to it.

    Update: Colleague went to the next office and tried to connect it to another MacBook and it worked. Using the same cable.

    Yeah, Apple's shitty drivers do that when the cable is just barely on the edge, and it can't do the secret Apple handshake quite up to Apple snuff. So it disconnects it, and lo and behold there's this Apple device connected. So it tries to connect it. And fails. And disconnects. Repeat. I keep my phone on vibrate. Buzz-buzz buzz-buzz buzz-buzz... sometimes I can get it to turn off sex toy mode and start charging by killing the iTunesHelper.exe process (on Windows).

    Sometimes, and this is really fucking awesome, it launches iTunes -- even though I've explicitly told it not to launch iTunes when I plug in the phone. (Because waiting for iTunes to load when you didn't want it is almost as fun as waiting for Help to load when you hit F1 in Excel by mistake.)

    Fun fact... I have never had a non-Apple-device USB cable stop working.

  • @anotherusername I've had cables fail, but they were cheap ones that had been abused.

    The opening iTunes when disabled thing is seriously bad. Seems to hit my iPad randomly. On an old MacBook pro (last of the 2012 non retina models) it takes ages and makes the system unusable until it finishes as it eats all system resources.

    Another Apple related wtf: I had iTunes on my desktop when I upgraded it to Windows 10. Now I can't uninstall it or upgrade it because the version I have isn't compatible with Windows 10. The auto updater runs periodically, but fails. The uninstall fails. I can't manually install a new version, because removing the old one fails. Thanks Apple!

    My daughter normally has an external monitor plugged into her laptop. She's currently away from her normal spot, so no external monitor. Windows 10 is apparently too retarded to notice that the monitor isn't there any more so it was opening programs off screen, which she didn't know how to fix, because why would this even occur to you to be the problem?

    Hover your mouse over the taskbar icon until the window preview pops up. Right-click the preview, select "Move" from that contextual menu. Hit any of the arrow keys on the keyboard, and the window will "snap" to the mouse position, where you can then move it where you want it.

    This works unless the application is Discord, because the retarded developers who shat out that piece of crap didn't bother implementing any standard Windows window controls.

    Note that windows opening off-screen is an application problem, not an OS problem. Windows (the OS) is not lying to those applications about where the monitors are, the applications are using stored coordinates without bothering to sanity-check them.

    And if you're the guy writing applications, goddamnit, it's fucking 2017: get a clue. Everything is plug-and-play. Monitors, audio devices, input devices. Stop caching shit without sanity-checking it when you read the cache. Stop assuming hardware can't disappear at any random time, because it can and you have to fucking cope. There's monitors powered by fucking USB plugs, you can buy from them NewEgg for $80, so stop giving us this broken bullshit and write quality code.

    It could, but that would break another app that put a window offscreen on purpose. (And yes, arguably that should never have been possible, but we live in the world we live in.) Windows has no way of knowing whether the application put the window offscreen on purpose or not.

    EDIT: actually I'm genuinely curious now. Are there any windowed OSes that don't let you put windows 100% offscreen? Unless recent macOS versions have changed that, I don't think I've ever seen one. (And yes, I know there's like Linux WMs that do tiles instead of windows, I'm talking about OSes with windows.)

    So the wife wanted a Spotify account. I still think the whole streaming business is a pretty stupid idea, especially as I listen to a lot of music where I have only rather expensive if any connectivity, but OK, at least that liberates me from party muzak selection duty.
    Of course the service is Not Available in My Cuntry™. Luckily I still have a German credit card and a VPN to France. So I go to spotify.com and it helpfully redirects me to spotify.com/fr/ so I can read everything in French. Because obviously HTTP's Accept-Language header is bullshit and the language people with French IP addresses understand best is always French. My French is pretty crap but at least I'm fluent in HTTP, so I try to replace that "fr" in the URL with "en". Nope, Spotify knows what's best for me and I get redirected to the French site again. Ah well. Crappy French is crappy but should do for filling up some form. Works well enough. When I get to the credit card part, however: "Il semble que vous utilisiez une carte du pays suivant : Allemagne. Votre compte Spotify doit être enregistré dans le même pays que votre mode de paiement. Remplacez par un compte en Allemagne ou utilisez une autre carte."

    WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?! European Union, motherfuckers, have you heard of it?! It's none of your fucking business where my card is from! If this was an American company they'd be excused but they are SWEDES! Juncker Christ, WTF.

    OK, at least they present me with a button "Change to Germany". The URL changes to https://www.spotify.com/fr/something/something?country=DE, they reset my payment method to motherfucking PayPal and give me this mishmash that perfectly matches the URL:
