Suggest speakers for a desktop!
-
So in my recent move the subwoofer on my cheap set of logitech desktop speakers died. This is my home gaming system, and I hate wearing headphones. I'll tolerate having a headset with a mic for voice chat occasionally, but do a lot of work on it without headphones on and listening to music.
Suggestions for speakers that don't suck and aren't stupidly expensive? I have outputs for the whole range from SPDIF (optical) to separated outputs for each channel.

@masonwheeler Please elaborate, if you will. What's the price threshold of "doesn't suck" in your experience? I don't need super-fancy-blow-down-the-walls, but having bass reproduction would be nice.

I've got Creative T20 stereo speakers on my desktop at home and they're pretty good.
-
@hungrier Thanks. I'll consider those.
Other suggestions would be wonderful.

10 seconds on Amazon finds me plenty of decent 2.1 speaker sets for £50 or less.
-
@benjamin-hall That was mostly facetious.
-
@masonwheeler ah. I guess my default setting of "take everything serious" failed me.

Around here?!?

@masonwheeler I have filters in place for most categories, but I guess I need to add some for this category as well. I'm used to the help categories being at least somewhat serious.
-
@masonwheeler To be fair to @Benjamin-Hall, this is a help section, and as such, is intended for help, not facetiousness.

@benjamin-hall Scott Hanselman is one of the best speakers of all time, but nowadays a bit on the web-y side.

25 watts and a subwoofer for only $11 more

I have a Logitech set like this:
Except the state-of-the-art in like 2004 or so. I'm not a huge audiophile, so I'll probably keep them until they stop working.
EDIT: if I want 7.1, for example in a stealth FPS game, I have a USB headset for that.

i didn't say they were perfect, but they're 25$, have "loud enough" sound that if you're not a metalhead should get you jiving to the groove just fine.

@blakeyrat I ended up with that system's big brother for one main reason--it was on sale. And I figured I should actually use all the ports on my machine =)
-
@benjamin-hall That's actually a really good sale. Too bad I don't have any place to put the rear speakers.

I actually run pretty soft on music. Ears can't handle super loud noises, which is why I teach high school...Oh, wait.
