Ben Lubar's teeth get dumber

So I had my wisdom teeth out today. Orange nose thing that feeds me N2O and smells like orange sherbet tastes, some kind of weird blue gel, some injections into my lower gums. Didn't feel the injections at all.
I was listing Dark Souls bosses in my head to make sure I was mentally ok. Asylum Demon, Taurus Demon, Bell Gargoyles, Capra Demon... Last Giant... Iyudex Gundar, Vordt, Curse-rotted Greatwood (and so on).
It was weird because every part of my body was normal except my mouth. I should have brought my dhromebook so I could type stuff on it, but whatever.

I got mine removed a few months ago. How many did they take out? You're in for a world of hurt if it was more than 2...

It's the bottom 2 that cause the world of hurt. When I had my top 2 removed, all I needed was one dose of Tylenol that night.

@asdf I had one dentist tell me to take them out. I got a second opinion, he said that until they actually cause physical pain, don't do anything. And also said it's a common thing for less scrupulous dentists to recommend doing it as a "precautionary" measure when it's completely unnecessary, because it's a low-risk, low-time, high-profit operation.
It's been 15 years, they haven't caused pain yet.

I had the whole "hmm, you might need to have your wisdom teeth out" followed by a "actually, then we're going to have to crack your jaw and spread it apart a bit to make room". We noped out shortly thereafter.
My teeth are awful. Imagine like the sidekick guy from Nacho Libre, but worse.

I got a couple teeth pulled today, neither of them wisdom teeth. Only wisdom tooth I've had out went with what was left of the molars near it.
I'm still not sure why people are loopy after teeth extractions. Is it a side effect of being put under? I've only ever had local anesthetic with dental work.

Yeah, I was similar. I only had two (the top two) for some reason, but they actually came in fine and didn't cause any problems for a while. Then it apparently turns out that they were hollow or something, and both of them ended up cracking/shattering, but there was no pain as there seemed to be a bone coating underneath where the tasty nougaty center of the tooth should have been that covered the nerve connection enough that I just left them until that ended up getting worn enough to get annoying, then I had them pulled.

Part of the reason i got a second opinion is when they do dental work for me they have to fully anesthetize me because I have the world's most sensitive gag reflex, and that makes the thing a whole lot more risky. (Still 99.99% safe, but a lot more risky than a local. And way more expensive.)
Anyway, depends on the dentist. Some will do full anesthesia either on their own recommendation or because the patient requests it. Some dentists refuse to even if the patient request it because, like I said, the possibility of something going wrong increases.

According to my mom, after I had mine out, I just repeated "I'm not loopy at all" over and over again the whole way back to the house. I only remember saying it once or twice.

I still have them all. I went through a few months of pain, but it was not enough to overcome my fear of dentists! I hate going to dentist, horrible gag reflex and sensitive teeth.
My wife had 2 extra wisdom teeth removed (she is wiser than me), so together we have done our share of losing wisdom I guess.

In the OP he had gas as well.
There is often epinephrine in the local.

Wisdom tooth extraction is a lot more invasive since they basically have to take teeth out from behind your rearmost molars, and if they're impacted (still below gums) they gotta slice that stuff open.
One of my wisdom teeth was rotated 90° and below gum, so to remove it the dentist first had to slice a window open to it, cut it into fourths, and take each piece out individually. It was very crunchy and unnerving and uncomfortable, but he only gave me local anesthetic. My guess is that the gas is to minimize discomfort.
Plus for these extractions you might get some strong painkillers that can leave you loopy. I only got a couple of Tylenol/codeine pills but my friends got oxy.

I had an impacted wisdom tooth that wasn't causing pain, but created an abscess that nearly destroyed my jaw. I've heard of similar cases where it got worse, and caused nerve damage in the face.
So, while I agree the whole "precautionary wisdom tooth removal" thing is usually bullshit, you really do need to get those x-rays during your normal dentist checkup.

Yeah, I haven't been to a dentist for... quite a while for that reason. Though once I did go it turned out I have actually pretty good teeth, so there.

Mine kept kind of coming in and then not. It was a little painful, but not really a big deal. Eventually, one of them wore a cavity into a molar so I really had to get them out.
Apparently while I was out some blood squirted from my mouth into the eye of one of the nurses, so I had to go get a blood test to make sure I didn't give her AIDS or something.

When I had mine removed, I did it in an hospital linked with a university (i.e. where a lot of interns watch/learn how to do stuff). After asking me if that was OK, the doctor was discussing the whole time what he was doing, for the benefit of a trainee doctor. Which was really OK, until he came to the point where he had a couple instruments in my mouth and was explaining "see, if I push here (slight prod), I'm going to hurt the gums, whereas if I slightly rotate here, the tooth is moving -- but not here, otherwise (another slight prod), see, this other tooth that we want to keep is moving also".
All that was very light and didn't hurt me in any way (not that I could feel with the anaesthetic, but still), yet it was quite unnerving having the guy discuss how the slightest wrong move on his part could maim me, while he had a lot of very sharp tools deep in my mouth...

This thread makes me feel like my experience was really unusual. I had all four wisdom teeth growing in at 90 degrees; we knew for a couple years they'd eventually impact but I didn't have to get them out quite yet. When they did impact, got them out under total anesthesia. Once I was up, I took Tylenol for a good week or so if I recall; they prescribed me Percocet or some such but I refuse to take narcotics. I guess I must have just had a really good oral surgeon.

It was mostly the poor bastards protruding their way into yet non-existent gum. I had small gaps between some of my teeth, after this onslaught all the suckers are now packed tight and tidy :--)
