Good brand names for dietary supplements?

At the advice of a doctor friend, I'm want to start taking melatonin in an effort to hopefully stop having insomnia all the fucking time.
The problem is it's a non-FDA regulated "dietary supplement" and I'm wary because I've read all kinds of scary articles about those being filled with like lead paint or dead rotting mules.
So... are there any good trusted brands that sell dietary supplements I can be reasonably sure of? Apparently there's an organization called "NSF" that certifies these, are they actually all that?

@blakeyrat good luck. I tried melatonin and valerian root both and neither did a single thing to help me sleep. I tried several brands and none of them did anything.
My doctor did prescribe a good medication that worked well. I could check the medicine cabinet if you want the name. Supposedly it has no side effects and no risk of dependence.

Neither worked for me either.
Benadryl is pretty safe.

From what I'm told, if lack of melatonin isn't your problem, melatonin will do jack shit for you. But if it is, it'll work wonders.

The decision to try melatonin is not the question, I already decided that.

When I need a trustworthy product, I go on Amazon and just trust the ratings. Find the products with lots of them, then compare percentages of negative ones (rather than the final stars. I'd rather have 95% 4-star ratings than 80% 5 star and 20% 1 star).

@blakeyrat I use a brand called Kalms. I don't know if it contains the ingredient you asked for, but it's a well known brand here in the UK, and I've had very good results from them. I feel sleepy within 30 minutes of taking them, and got very good sleep. I went through a patch of really bad insomnia over Christmas and these tablets helped me get over it within a week.
I hope you manage to get over your insomnia, I know how horrible it can be.

The biggest problem with non-FDA regulated supplements is not that you'll get something that contains lead paint or dead mule carcass, but that you'll get something that contains no useful ingredients at all.

Amazon seems to have best ratings on Nature's Bounty and Natrol.
Problem is, NEITHER of those has the NSF logo. That's kind of my second question about whether that matters, or whether NSF is toothless and their approval doesn't mean anything.

NOW is on Amazon, but no USP or NSF certification.
Kalms (on Amazon) just has "Valerian Root Extract", or "Hop Stobiles" and sounds like homeopathy bullshit.
Jarrow's there and has good reviews, but nothing to indicate it has certifications or which certifications if any.
Dr's Best is on there, with good reviews, no indication of certifications.
Herb Pharm is missing from Amazon altogether.
Am I the crazy person for wanting some assurance that this drug product:
- Doesn't contain anything awful
- Does contain what it's supposed to?
It's starting to feel like I'm the crazy one here. If you're selling this unregulated crap, and could get a NSF logo, why wouldn't you? I mean, am I paranoid to think it's because you wouldn't pass their requirements?
I guess I'll just pick up the Jarrow's brand? I dunno. It seems like "buying safe dietary supplements" should be a solved problem here in 2017.

@anonymous234 Damnit, I swear to Christ I looked at Nature Made brand and it had no certification when I did. Lemme go change my order real quick.
EDIT: I am not insane. They don't have the logo on the "vitamelts" or "adult gummies" version of the same product. Only the regular pills.

If I remember rightly, that's the brand I tried. They're very small pills, if that's your concern. Quite easy to swallow with some liquid.

@anonymous234 Thanks for posting the image; I'm away from home and couldn't remember it but immediately recognized it. I use Nature Made melatonin when I need to sort out my sleep cycle and it works well for me.

At the risk of being that guy who gives you advice you haven't asked for: have you tried the likes of f.lux to adjust the brightness and color of your screen?
It might not work for you, but at least it's not something you dump on your body, so.

The reason I mentioned f.lux is that it is claimed that reducing the amount of blue light you receive from screens helps with your melatonin. So it is relevant to this thread.
If you've already tried it, you could have just told me so.

OK I'll answer your stupid question and fuck you.
A lot of things are "claimed" that aren't backed by science. I yet to see any serious study that shows that f.lux (and ripoffs) do anything whatsoever, and until I do I have that filed firmly under "bullshit-orama".
You can use f.lux while you're drinking your homeopathy "detox" tea and doing your reiki massage exercises before you enter the sensory isolation chamber to align your chakras.
