A quick thank you to all and spam!

  • Hey Guys,  I know the recent influxes of spam here have made things a bit difficult as of late.  And I wanted to let you know we appreciate your help and patience with it all.  I usually peruse all the boards to try and hunt the spam down each morning (deleted 10 from today so far)  and then periodically as time at work allows. When you guys report the spam It makes it easier for us mods to find and kill it.  It also provides us a direct link to the offending post.  Please continue to report the spam you find and if you need anything I can be reached through pm here or you can email me on my personal email (direct to my phone) at info [at] brandonleachphoto [dot] com.

  •  I wish you would stop deleting it.  I really appreciate the links to cheap shoes.  I mean, I've purchased about 35 pairs now, it's just so amazing of a deal.

What about the celebrity handbags?  Are those doing anything for you?

If you'd like I could email you contents of all the spam threads!  Hell while I'm at it I could just place you on their mailing lists as well!  Soon you could be swimming in savings!

  • The comments on the front page stories don't have a "report abuse" button. The spammers have dropped some in the main story today. So what is the preferred reporting mechanism?

The forum mods have no power on the front page.  I suppose you could bug Alex about it.

  • I mentioned this in the main article today.  Bstorer is right.  Our privaledges extend only to the forums themselveswe can't do anything to the article comments.  I suggest still reporting them however as eventually Ammoq or Alex will see it.

There's no point really, there is such a rediculous amount of spam posted on the main site. I tried everything... akismet, blocked all of China, redid captcha, required registration, throttled, etc... but there's no winning. Stops 'em for a day. They have people manually do it.

I'm going to try Akismet again... i'm sure they've improved. But for now, I just bulk delete spam direclty in the database.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

bad-behavior ? (Not intended to be a total solution, but part of one.)

    redid captcha

Hey, so that's where craaazy, pirates, atari, doom and tacos went!

  • I figured you'd have to directly delete them from the DB.  Short of disabling commenting entirely there probably isn't really any way of stopping them permanently.  Kudo's for your efforts though.

I recently realized that my anti-spam efforts did not include "[url=" searches. It was in the db query ( LIKE '%[url=')... but the [ needs to be escaped out. So, i'll do that one of these days and go back through all the old comments.

I am thinking of disabling comments on older articles, but it's easy enough to delete everything in bulk. This article is always crazy: http://thedailywtf.com/Comments/Interview_by_Proxy.aspx

Wow! 14 pages of pure spam... Why are they still hitting that article 5 months later?  Years ago (early 2000's) I ran a webzine in the music industry that sometimess got up to 10k visitors a day.  This is one of the reasons it folded around 2004.  The other being my partners didn't have the time or energy to put into it anymore.  The forums became clogged with spam way beyond our ability to maintain.

My wife thinks they're awesome.  I got one of Michelle Obama's lightly used at a 75% discount: now only $2,000!
