Using 'back' sometimes breaks rendering for anon users

  • 🚽 Regular

Begrudging registered here to report an annoying bug that kept popping up while I was lurking.

Randomly when I use the 'back' button (Firefox 29.0.1) I just see pages of un-rendered site gubbins instead, e.g.

    {"post_stream":{"posts":[{"id":9283,"name":"sam","username":"sam","avatar_template":"/user_avatar/what.thedailywtf.com/sam/{size}......[continued for a long while]

Once it starts it persists doing this all the way through the page buffer until I perform a refresh which temporarily fixes the issue.

    I haven't found a repeatable trigger yet.

  • Out of interest, how were you managing to keep up with the discussions without an account? I found it almost impossible (hence the account).

I wasn't really. Mostly I was just following the sidebar discussions by scrolling to the bottom then 'backing off' until I saw posts I remembered.
Trying to following any of the main threads was frustrating, partially as people keep splitting the damn things which is hideous behavior IMHO.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

I'm not really convinced that having an account helps all that much; splitting is still confusing. The only place where I'd accept it a bit would be in threads in Meta where a bug is fully identified; splitting off into the Bug sub-category at that point isn't too harmful. (I'm willing to consider Meta to be the most general-Discourse-like area of this site.)

But otherwise? Please don't, @codinghorror. It's not a feature that really fits with how this community rolls.

This has been discussed and I wouldn't call it an issue any more, the split-fever seems to have gone.

OK so this only happened ..

    • on extended reading of topics
    • as an anonymous user
    • after pressing the back button?

That's all correct. I know that's almost uselessly broad but bug reports are always more data as to which areas of the architecture might need a closer look I guess.

I haven't had it happen (yet) as a logged in user.
