So I came into work yesterday morning to find one of the lads rewiring our VoIP closet. There were a few silly problems with it recently: cables were swapped around a few times so we had no idea which one corresponded to what phone; they also get used 24/7 and usually overheat after a 48 hour period of being on; several cables seemed to be carrying quite a lot of noise so they were getting replaced.
Anyhow, this was the final result of the 3 hour operation, cables were sorted but not labeled, just the fxs units were labeled. What needed to be replaced was replaced, and the fxs units were hung from their cat5 + cat3 cables to maximize the surface area accessable to the airflow from the fan below.

If it's anything like the company I work for, no. Shelves *have* to be installed by building maintenance, which means scheduling them to come and do it. It also means you need to also get health and safety involved to ensure the shelf installation will not cause any harm to others or increase accident rates/etc.
Far easier to dangle :)

Good point. It's the same where I work I guess. We had to move to another set of cubes six months ago, and being computer guys we just started packing up and moving our computers (it's not like we don't know how to plug in a fuckign computer). Well, a guy from the Department of Guys Who Walk Around Installing Shit (or DGWWAIS for short), came up and started yelling at us, telling us that we were not authorized to move the comptuers ourselves.

This is by far either the dumbest or the cleverest installation I've seen in a long time — I just can't decide which.

I like this install - with two exceptions.
First, why the fuck do you have a 3com Superstack 3 in there? That shit ain't even a switch, for god's sake!
Second, WHAT THE HELL IS THAT BOX DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH IT? That looks even more dangerously ancient.
I'm not sure what the unit up top is exactly, but it has that "I was built in the last decade" look to it.
Oh, and while I can see the point in using them, I don't think those Linksys units are really appropriate and if you keep trying to scale this you're going to end up with nothing but a disaster.

I did this once with a ZIP drive. It was suspended from the IDE cable out of an open case.
That was a temporary reverse-backup operation, though. O_O

I have this sneaking suspicion that health and safety would have more of an issue with the fan in the picture that has no grille on the front (just the fully exposed spinning fan blades).
I would also be interested in seeing one of those units fall from it's hanging location and hit the exposed, spinning fan blades.

I'm guessing it was probably just lying around doing nothing so they used that when doing the original install. VoIP doesn't exactly use a lot of bandwidth so a hub is really all thats needed.

That is a callmaster unit. It's used for monitoring/managing the calls, and providing power to the individual phone handsets. It's actually relatively new it only looks like that because its actually made from a home/student electronics kit. NO company made any such unit at the time we were setting up the VoIP system and all providers that we look at had either no management software or all their software was a web application, with massive latency run from their end and not ours. (of course that also means that if their web server went down, which a few did frequesntly then we would have no way of managing/monitoring the lines during that time).

If we were going to scale then we would first have to take over the neighbouring buildings... no room to even consider putting in any new phones.

It's a desk fan, if I put my finger (or my avatar) in there, the blades would break and the motor would burn out.

I'm afraid not, all I know is that they're built by some guy in Cyprus.
