What movies did everyone else seem to enjoy, or get high marks by critics, but you felt like the only person who thought it was shit? Since other people might disagree and haven't seen the movie yet, I suggest using spoiler tags where appropriate.

    The Prestige

    Hoverbait

    It's a Wonderful Life

Long, drawn out, and follows a man who's life story was as long as Forrest Gump's, but 10% as interesting. Pass.

The Game (1997 with Sean Penn)

It's old, but I'll give it spoiler tags

    Burn After Reading

I might give this one another try. I recall reading the back of the cover before renting it from Blockbuster way back when, and intrigued with the summary, rented it. I think I was simply expecting a different execution, so this could be a matter of me doing a taste test of milk and, drinking orange juice instead, I give it an unfair assessment.

    Little Miss Sunshine

This movie just seemed creepy to me. But it's probably also because I find childrens' pageants to be inherently creepy anyways.

    The Prestige

This was literally the thing I immediately thought of when I saw the thread title.

I have a somewhat unique perspective on this film, because I got into the theatre a few minutes late and missed the entire opening scene, in which we see the cloning machine in action. Also, I didn't know what the film was supposed to be about; I had seen the trailer for The Illusionist (which came out at about the same time) once, and that was the movie I thought I was going to be seeing.

So I didn't know that the cloning was real, and since the idea violates the Laws of Thermodynamics, I thought that that was the puzzle we were supposed to be solving: what's the trick behind Tesla's machine? But no, apparently it's real (somehow!) and the puzzle we're supposed to be solving was how the other teleportation trick works. (Which I took one look at and said "obviously he has a twin.")

Between the horrible science, the misplaced puzzles, and the bit that goes like this:

👨🏻 What knot did you use?
    👨🏼 I don't remember!
    👨🏻 Well you suck!
👨🏼 Well Wolverine could totally beat up Batman!
    👨🏻 Oh, it's on now!

...and then they commence being absolutely horrible people (not just towards each other, but in general) for the rest of the movie, leaving me with no one to root for, I really didn't enjoy The Prestige at all.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The trailers showed us the promise of a Star Wars heist film.

Act 1 set up the need for a heist. Act 2 set up a heist.

Then out of nowhere in act 3, it takes a hard left and turns into a D-Day IN SPACE film where everyone ends up dead. :wtf:

Sorry, but that's just not what I paid for a ticket to watch.

  • Impossible Mission - B

Also, while we're on the subject of Christopher Nolan...

Our hero is doing his very best to defend his home, a comics-version of New York City, from the scourge of crime, when an insane villain comes along and begins wreaking havoc. This nutcase believes that people are inherently evil and vicious, and wants to push the hero to the breaking point.

As part of his sadistic crusade to destroy the hero, he sets him up with a horrendous choice: save the woman he loves, or an alternate target with high societal value.

But in the end, the people of the city defy his dark expectations. They don't turn on our hero; they choose to do what's right instead. This is the point where the villain has lost, and after that the hero's pro forma victory is assured.

I am, of course, describing Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man movie. Why, what superhero film did you think I was talking about?

Huh? Did you never watch Star Wars? How did you not know everyone would die? The D-Day comparisons are way overblown. Go watch that movie again. Comparing the two is just lazy. And seriously, you have no one to blame but yourself for that.

  • And then the murders began.

Huh? Did you never watch Star Wars? How did you not know everyone would die?

Star Wars claims that the events of Rogue One were "their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire". Generally fights where you lose 95% of your solders, and the enemy escapes unscathed, are not considered "victories".

  • Ways you're wrong:

It's a Wonderful Life is a wonderful movie. Maybe Pottersville is "more interesting", but that's not the point at all. "Zuzu's petals! Zuzu's... there they are! Bert! What do you know about that! Merry Christmas!"

Little Miss Sunshine every plot line in this movie is amazing, but by far my favorite is the teenage son's. I won't spoil it here, but holy shit. (Yes some of the jokes fall completely flat or are strangely and off-putting-ly slapstick, but I think the movie as a whole holds up.)

    My list:

    The Graduate

Yes the boomers love this one, until I point out the plot of this movie is: "oh, by the way, if you stalk a girl in a creepy-enough fashion, she'll fall in love with you." To which they'll reply either:

    1. it was a different time, or
    2. well the movie doesn't make it clear she loves Benjamin, just that she doesn't love the other guy. (Kind of a slightly valid argument, but the movie's still creep-o central.)

Either way, you're wrong, boomers. Having a great soundtrack and that one cute joke about "plastics, Benjamin, plastics" doesn't make it a great film.

(BTW another way to annoy boomers: point out that Sideways is mostly a film about drunk driving. Because holy fuck, how does the filmmaker just ignore the constant drunk driving? Seriously! Talk about fridge logic.)

    The Talented Mr. Ripley

Here's the plot of this movie, which I'm going to spoil because fuck this movie:

    • There's a gay guy in a decade before it was ok to be a gay guy
    • He finds another gay guy who's rich and shacks up with him
    • He murders the other gay guy and briefly takes on his identity
    • He finds another gay guy who's rich and shacks up with him
    • He murders the other gay guy and briefly takes on his identity
    • He finds another gay guy who's rich and shacks up with him
    • He murders the other gay guy and briefly takes on his iden---
    • Then the movie just ends without any kind of conclusion or resolution whatsoever

    Absolute garbage film.

The movie is VERY Stanley Kubrick. Which I happen to be a huge fan of.

I wouldn't call it dull, I'd call it "very deliberately paced". The point of the movie is that it doesn't have any answers (unlike the book which in comparison just spells everything out in great detail). When you're making a movie that doesn't have any answers, you have to give the audience time to reflect on it and come up with their own interpretation, and that's exactly what 2001: A Space Odyssey does. (Everything from the simple obvious ones, like "they hear the nasty whining tone because the Monolith's transmission interferes with their moon suit radios" to the really obtuse, "what the hell is going on with the ending?" ones.)

It's also one of my favorite movies ever, so them's fighting words, etc.

I don't agree it's a movie I hate, but goddamned has any movie in history been more over-rated than The Big Lebovsky? Maybe the Rocky Horror Picture Show-- and only because it spawned a new kind of participatory art form in theaters, not because it's actually that great a movie.

Well, I like hard sci-fi, and I don't like the trippy hippy drug induced nonsense. So from my perspective, Kubrik's influence ruins the movie, while Clarke's more conventional story with clearly fleshed out ideas hits the mark.

You expect too much from a movie made on like $ 10K budget. It's not perfect, but it's way better than it has any right to be given their production.

It's not the indie sci-fi movie Jesus. Everyone knows that honor goes to "The Man From Earth".

  • Looking through the IMDB top 250 list, I have a few more:

    - Django Unchained (2012)

My least favorite Tarantino film. I didn't dig the main character and hated the action scenes. They felt entirely tensionless. The whole thing felt like white guilt self-flagellation got in the way of everything else.

    - Inglourious Basterds (2009)

My second least favorite Tarantino film. I didn't like the dialogue scenes, they didn't work with subtitles. None of the protagonists was particularly compelling. I was just bored most of the time.

    - The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

I stopped watching half-way through. I disliked DiCaprio's character and didn't want to watch his predictable douchebaggery followed by downfall. Already seen that a million times.

    - 12 Years a Slave (2013)

This is an average drama at best, that is elevated to top 250 on the wings of American white guilt. Movies based on real life are always a hard sell for me, and this one is particularly dull and uninteresting.

  • @cartman82 said in Highly Acclaimed Movies you Hate Thread:

Besides, I preferred there being a movie I could watch and not have it end in a huge cliffhanger whose conclusioncontinuation is first two or so years later. (Also, I ended up rather disliking the force awakens one, after having to watch it a second time.)

I thought it was at least less annoying than Force Awakens. Most of the broken in it is pacing, IMHO. Character development is too rushed and as such the third act just seems jarring.

Speaking of highly acclaimed nerd movies - Lord of the Rings. Fuck it. Fuck it with a boring machine. Inception

I've already posted a lengthy explanation elsewhere on this forum. (Maybe it was in the Unpopular Opinions Thread?) Anyway, the movie was advertised as something deep and mind-blowing, but in the end it was just a mediocre action movie with a plot that makes Swiss cheese look solid. There were also zero relatable characters in the movie, the premise was ridiculous and the mechanics of the fictional world were changed/ignored almost constantly.

All in all, it was just a series of nice special effects without any real story behind it, so they shouldn't have advertised it as anything else.

If you look closely, yes, the movie gives away all kinds of hints. Just like many movies with a twist, where after watching it a second time knowing the twist, you can see those scenes and say "oh of course! Now I see why the guy said that!" But its intention was to make it hidden.

And that fits the movie's theme of distracting the audience while it deceives them. In that sense I understand why people consider it well written, and I can appreciate it, but I just considered the twist itself to be way too out there.

  • Interstellar. It sets up a really great, somewhat hard sci-fi premise and then chucks everything out of the window for a sappy climax. Probably the only Nolan movie I have major issues with.
