Assorted WTFery

  • I've been collecting these screenshots for a couple months, but I don't think they qualify much as WTFs on their own, so I'm posting them all in one huge thread. Enjoy.

Well, that's one way to file a bug report

Why the "www" makes a difference

Ironically enough, this works in other browsers.

From the "don't say we didn't give you a choice" department:

This one is my attempt to install Python 3.1 on my PC. Oddly enough, once you clicked through this question, you couldn't go back to it, as if it were a seperate installer altogether.

This isn't much of a WTF but errors like this always make the front page anyways.

Took this at the hotel restaurant at RCFM '09. Therefore, it's the only one I have that I can actually put a date to. Click for larger view.

    And lastly,

I guess the Prius isn't as popular as I thought

    Take that, product placement!

On an unrelated note, I had problems uploading these pictures to Photobucket. It freezes your browser for several seconds on each page load, and copying the image URLs to the clipboard consists of mousing over the image to make the textbox appear, selecting all the text in the textbox, and hitting Ctrl+C twice without moving the mouse cursor away.

  • Would be awesome if the "Back to safety" button redirected you to https://google.com.

You forgot to say if your PC runs Vista?

  •  Good question. Shame it doesn't have any window frame, title bar or anything to identify the OS.

It could either be: Vista, Windows 7, or any previous version with a skin installed.

Good point, although the fact that the screenshot itself says "not available on Vista" should tell you what I have.

Well, and the fact that Windows 7 is pretty unlikely and I'm not aware of any skin for pre-Vista Windows that can replicate the "glass" look of Aero.

Except that Aero is very clearly not enabled in the screenshot (opaque titlebar/borders).

  • Huh? But I did have Aero enabled.

It's just hard to see because of my wallpaper.

Take a look at the Close button - when Aero isn't enabled, it's not aligned to the top of window.

But according to the site, I already did. Now where does that leave me?

This is actually not an WTF at all.  I've worked with this system before.  It's a touch screen system for servers to ring in orders which get printed in the kitchen/bar.  The printer at the bar was jammed so the system routed the ticket to a printer that would print, and gave a message saying it had printed there.  What would you expect to happen?

    And that, without Aero:

    - the titlebar has is a sick blue tint, while the shot has the vista default colour tones.
    - the titlebar has a gradient instead of that "glassy shine" texture background, while the shot has the texture
    - And the window edge has no texture at all, while the shot has.

I'm thinking Root Horick was under the influence of substances when posting. Odd that it has a detrimental effect on observational ablities, because it seems to work out for Morbs.

I was Posting Under the Influence as well but since I have Aero Glass disabled in Vista and the screenshot showed window borders more transparent-y than mine I was able to figure that one out.

Well, since the backup is listed as "Broiler Printer", I'd kind of expect the receipt to be branded onto a flame-broiled beef patty or something.  But maybe that's just me.

It has a title bar widget completely alien to Vista, looks like a maximize icon with an arrow coming out of it. Given that, it's almost certainly a skin and it's impossible to identify the OS, but it's probably *not* Vista. (Since a normal person wouldn't skin Vista to look like Vista.)

Which the server could take to the bartender in exchange for the drink that s/he rang in.  The bartender gets fed, the customer gets their drink, everyone wins.

I'm using UltraMon. The new button is the "move to next monitor" button.

So where's the WTF?  They want the same installer to run on all versions of windows; on one version of windows it can't offer a particular option, so rather than skip the screen altogether they were slightly lazy and just pre-selected the only valid option and greyed them both out.  At least you get to be told why you're not being offered a choice you might otherwise have expected to be offered.

You know, I'd forgotten there were people who DON'T use UltraMon.

Also, get more RAM. Only 2gb? Pathetic, that stuff comes free in your breakfast cereal these days.

So this blonde goes into a bar and asks the bartender "Hey, bartender - give me an entendre, and make it a double!"

The bartender answers "So, you want a big one?"

WindowBlinds can. And yes, there's still people using this crappy piece of software.

Ughhhhhhhhhhh. One of my "friends" insists on using it. I've gotten into fistfights with him over it on at least 2 drunken occasions.

You're doing it wrong.  I just click once in the textbox and it immediately copies and shows a little yellow notification of the fact.

I think it might be Flashblock's fault for that. However, I do want to point out that on Linux, it shows the notification without copying at all.

I think the first few times I used photobucket, it notified without copying.  This is even more of a problem if you close the tab/window while believing the link you want is on the clipboard.  Even worse if something else is on the clipboard and you don't notice until after posting it somewhere.

How so? I need to change the godforsaken shit music that somehow ended up playing, and that means I have to use his computer. It logically follows that I see the UI and get pissed off. So I go get in a fistfight. Makes perfect sense to me.

Violence is never a valid response to a poor UI.  It's better to explain to them what they're doing wrong.  Be sure to use lots of easy-to-follow analogies, such as "WindowBlinds is the software-equivalent of the steaming pile I just left on your coffee table."  If he takes a swing at you, then, sure, you're morally obligated to hit him back, but at least you tried to reason with him.

    1. Steaming piles appear on your coffee table
    2. Fist-fights with non WB users
