Spotify trials adding 'sponsored songs' to playlists
Only non-subscribers were included in the trial, the company said.
What do you think? Could I be a tabloid journalist? Is my topic title clickbaity enough?

I am a user of the free tier, and I never use playlists.
OTOH I hated it very much when for several years, if you listened to literally ANYTHING on Soundcloud, John Legend's All Of Me started playing afterwards as a "related track".

@RaceProUK Eh, I generally just grab one of the genre playlists or daily playlists and let it choose music for me already. When I hear something I like I tick it to let it know it did a good job and to give me more stuff like it. Sponsored songs, as long as they follow the genre I'm listening to somewhat, would be indistinguishable from the rest of the songs for me.

do they still require a FB account to use?
because if so :DONOTWANT.AVI: on that account alone.
also play music still includes a youtube red subscription and has a bigger music library.

@accalia The mobile app doesn't hijack anything. But it also doesn't let you choose songs directly without premium; you have to listen to playlist/artist/album/radio on shuffle.

I signed up a few weeks before they announced that Facebook integration shit. Like I want to spam my friends with every song I listen to (and some of my friends did exactly that).
My brother signed up just after, and went for the obvious choice of creating a fake FB profile (Elgor Promethius I think)
Is the native application still awful and doing things like hijacking the close button to force you to do file -> exit to close it? I used to use the web interface purely because of that dick move

There is a setting now which makes the close button the close button. No problem with the native app nowadays, except it's not really native. The UI takes a long time to appear.

FWIW I've never had a problem with the Windows app. It hooks into my keyboard media keys and sits in the
traynotification area happily playing music. However it didn't like adding my local music collection, and the interface for browsing through that leaves much to be desired.

Yeah, but come on, it's less than $5 per month for premium, so there's really no reason to use the free tier.

True. I stream my music all the time.
I was paying for Play Music unlimited until my card expired and I didn't get round to updating the details. Thought I'd try going back to the free tier of what I uploaded before I started paying and I suddenly rediscovered a load of music I'd forgotten about.
If I buy an album every month or two, I'll still be paying less than the subscription and have a gradually increasing library that doesn't disappear when I stop paying. And it's all available from any PC or phone with an internet connection

I understand where you're coming from, but I still prefer streaming and I'm prepared to deal with the risk of me deciding to stop paying, the company going under or changing a device.
The last one I deal with by using Spotify, which works great on a great number of platforms. That's the reason why I never went Apple Music (apart from the free trial). It's awesome, but for example I wouldn't be able to use it while at work.
As for building the collection with the money I spend on Spotify, this wouldn't really work for me. I use the family plan, which I share with my girlfriend and a friend. The family plan is 30 PLN, or around $7. Which means my share is 10 PLN, or like $2.5. I could buy an album every 4-6 months, if that was my budget.

Wow, where do you live/what station are you listening to? I stopped listening to FM radio years ago, partly because of the ever-increasing amount and frequency of ad breaks (and the increasing awfulness of that ad content)...

There's still some reasonable stations left in the UK (depending on what your taste in listening runs to, of course). @wharrgarbl is in Brazil so who knows.

unfortunately, my music tastes aren't popular enough to be broadcast anywhere
including spotify or pandora, which can't even figure out any other similar artists, and in some cases have never even heard of the original artist that i searched for.i pick a station on pandora and get the same 25 songs over and over because it's the only 25 songs they can even find.

You might actually be able to listen on iHeartRadio.com -- I don't think you need an account to listen to live radio, but I don't know if they do IP sniffing to region-lock. They have some stations that are commercial-free, even.

I've used Spotify quite a bit, and it's so far been the best of the lot.
Pandora wants me to listen to emopop no matter how much I tell it I don't want to, and Spotify has introduced me to more music than Pandora has.
However, some of the things they have, they only have like one song of. Like Megababe (A band that's easier to buy than pirate. Who would have believed it!?). So far the only reliable place I can get music I like is, therefore, the Windows Store. And yet Groove Music makes you pay to turn the radio on at all, and won't let me choose indie bands I know they have as my interests, because the interests page has no search.
