Conexant soundcard drivers includes free keylogger!

It's a good thing I've hardly touched the Windows install on my work laptop, due to this epic fail in driver making:
So in addition to the Windows driver for the soundcard being a broken piece of shit that thinks the headphones gets disconnected whenever I pause music, it also logs and saves everything I type. Apparently, this is so it can track whenever the sound control buttons are pressed. Guess what! Linux can use those buttons fine without any special program, and I'm sure Windows can too without any special driver or program installed.
I'm trying to figure what use there is to save all keypresses to a file too. Does it save the keypress to a file and then read from it to see what got pressed? I don't even...

For volume and mute, yes. For media control keys, it's up to whatever software you're using to play your media, but also yes. The sound card doesn't need to know anything about playback control anyway.
-
@hungrier The keyboard have controls for volume, mute sound and mute mic. No special buttons for playback control.

soundcard
:o Those are still a thing? I don't think I've seen a soundcard offered for sale anytime this century! Motherboard-integrated audio has been standard pretty much forever.
-
@Atazhaia Mute mic may be special and need some handling from the driver. But it shouldn't need to log it, much less log anything that's not that.
-
@masonwheeler Well, the one integrated on the motherboard is still technically a soundcard. And my computer at home got a Soundblaster gaming soundcard, as the one integrated on the motherboard is a barebones basic model. I think they're more common for professional audio now, though, as any gaming motherboard nowadays tend to come with gaming-grade soundcard integrated.

standard yes, good no.
i've got a el-cheapo soundblaster in my backup rig because the mobo audio card crapped out and is incapable of outputting anything but static.

HP. nuff said.
-
@Atazhaia I've been playing with $5 USB sound card just fine. As long as it's stereo, it's enough for gaming.

IOW debug code included in prod.

@Gąska I do have 5.1 speakers, so something that does support it would be nice. Which the built-in does, but the last time I poked it it caused a kernel panic on boot so I don't trust it regardless and keep it disabled to be safe.
@CreatedToDislikeThis Ah. So they shipped a debug version of the driver. Doesn't make it any better, since it's still a fail! Sadly, next year will also have HP supplying new laptops despite the fact that they utterly cocked up this years delivery. I guess management are blind to the concerns from the staff that have to use the damn things. Of the options presented, our office wanted Dell. Although it doesn't matter to me as I have to wait a couple years for a new one anyway.

32" display would be nice too. Neither is necessary, or even helps that much with gaming.
-
@Gąska I have a 27" display atm. Thinking of dropping down to 24" when I get a new one, as I am going in the direction of using multiple monitors rather than one. Unsure if 1080p or 1440p yet. Sound system unsure. 5.1 was nice when I had the speakers placed properly, although atm I don't think it does a whole lot due to suboptimal placement. Although as I plan to get a new place to live soonTM I may be able to get optimal placement back again.
-
@Atazhaia BTW. I just noticed you're talking about speakers. As if your gaming setup involved speakers and not headphones. What the fuck is wrong with you?
-
@Gąska because there is no such thing as 5.1 surround sound headphones that have 6 sound emitters for immersive sound.
-
@Gąska I'm just not a fan of using headphones for long periods of time. I may be but I prefer speakers. I do use headphones whenever I need voice comms, though.
-
@Arantor what is 5.1 good for if you can't tell where the shot is fired from?

Your solitaire makes sounds?
-
@boomzilla yes it does. If yours doesn't, maybe try winning next time.

If you feel uneasy or exhausted from wearing headphones too long, the problem is that you spend too much time playing.
-
@Gąska Personally I just got bad ears that don't take well to being covered for extended periods.

I use Vengeance 2100s and they seem to be good enough. May not be perfect but I'm pretty sure after a certain point it doesn't really matter. My skill level (i.e., total scrub) makes the equipment largely irrelevant.

Oh also, I am reminded of realtek.
They're what passes for "normal" in the sound card world, so nothing here should surprise anyone
-
My dad also sticks to calling USB audio/MIDI interfaces "soundcards".

That's why hardware installation instructions always tell you to install the drivers before plugging in the hardware. If you do it the other way around, you would discover windows actually has the drivers as well and then not install the
bloatwarehandy helper applications
