Yeah, seriously...I'm usually kind of hungry afterwards.

All this talk of penguins and hunger put me in mind of something we have here, but may not exist elsewhere. So, I went to find an advert to show it off, and… I found this:

On August 11, 1984, United States President Ronald Reagan, while running for re-election, was preparing to make his weekly Saturday radio address on National Public Radio. During a sound check before the address, Reagan made the following joke to the radio technicians: "My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."
[...]
Contrary to popular misconception, this microphone gaffe was not broadcast over the air, but rather leaked later to the general populace. But the Tokyo newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun reported in October 1984 that the Soviet Far East Army was placed on alert after word of the statement got out and that the alert was not withdrawn until 30 minutes later.
-
@Zecc Is it just me, or can you hear laughter in that clip at the end?
Also, I know the US and Russia have never exactly been besties, but come on, it was obvious that was a joke.

The

On the other hand, given how high the stakes were, can you really blame the Russians for being cautious?
I mean, it's not like they starting bombing or whatever, they just applied what I guess was their standard alarm procedure. And "the alert was not withdrawn until 30 minutes later"?? It takes longer than that to start most video-conf meetings here (yeah, I know... slight exageration)...
Still, funny joke.

Maybe they release them to get the word out, "Don't fuck with us or we'll... fuck YOU".

Looking into it a bit more, and it's not just the longest known piece of English literature, it might just be the longest piece of literature regardless of language.

E_NOT_A_DRILL
it's an end mill, and as it doens't have flutes on the tip it's one that can't plunge cut. so it's a horizontal mill only, which meanse the square jig is pointless as it can't plunge cut and therefore wouldn't need to be constrained to a square hole as it can't cut one.
it's an interesting concept and it could be used to cut a square hole, it could even do a flat bottomed square hole if it was designed right, but it wasn't and the design as shown won't work.
3/10.
-
Firstly, "Drill" is in the title of the video, so you need to check your facts better.
Secondly, The content of the video shows the drill actually working and drilling a square hole.
I don't think you can put stuff on youtube that's blatantly false and so I know who I'd rather believe.

I learned that by drinking coffee and having a sense of smell.

Caffeine is an odorless chemical, so no. You did not. There might be other stuff from the coffee in your pee, too. You might be able to smell them. But you couldn't be smelling the caffeine.
Based on what I read, only a trace amount -- about 3% of it -- ends up in the urine, anyway. The rest is broken down inside the body (which is what I expected to happen to it). So even if it had an odor, you still probably wouldn't be able to smell it.

@djls45 OK... What is it?
-
@RaceProUK It's a bunch of statistics about Worm, the first major piece of online fiction by Wildbow. It's a story about superheros and supervillains. Wildbow has also written Pact (a story about the supernatural, set in the modern day) and Twig (set in alternate universe where the Industrial Revolution was biological, not mechanical).

What the hell is up with those colors?
And why does it include "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe", but not "The Chronicles of Narnia series"? (other series are listed; in fact, it looks to me like 8 of the top 10 on the list are series, composed of multiple smaller books or volumes)
-
@anotherusername I have no idea. That would make more sense. I think the original purpose was to show that this one story is longer than many series are.
I'm not sure whether the document is publicly editable. I think it used to be; it was a lot shorter when it was first produced.

Nope: it's an official name

@RaceProUK yeah, it's been official for a while. But last I recall, nobody was using it and a lot of citizens hated it. I dunno, you'd have to ask someone from there what they think about it now. I just remember that being "official, but unused".
