OneDrive for Business/Sharepoint WTF

  • I guess the WTF is what I'm saying as I try to figure this shit out.

I set up a "OneDrive for Business" folder, and shared it with a group (call it Visitors) through the OneDrive for Business app.

I got on a client, signed in as a different member of Visitors, and don't see the files I shared. OK.

I look around in the Teams, and it has no Microsoft Office 365 groups. Hm, OK.

I look around in the Outlook, and there's a Visitors group. But so what, I guess.

I look around in the Sharepoint web app, and there's a Visitors group. And I can even see my files. Yes!

So I install the Sharepoint app on my tablet. And I don't see the files.

    I DON'T SEE THE FILES.

    I DON'T SEE THE FILES

  • @Captain
If your account was recently added to the Visitors group, try logging out and logging back in. Group membership gets cached at login time and does not refresh very often.

  • It wasn't added recently. I made the group in March, and put my name@... and ops@... accounts in the group then.

  • :belt_onion:

@Captain i see where you went wrong.

    Sharepoint.

  • BINNED

    @Captain
Teams and Groups are not what you think they are.
Only way of consistently going to a shared OneDrive is by having the fucking 'Somedipshit shared some shit with you' mail, that is just slightly more convenient then writing the URL down.

  • @darkmatter I thought I was using OneDrive. Heck, I want to be using OneDrive, since all the Microsoft Office 365 apps know how to open and save files to OneDrive by default.

As opposed to opening and saving files from Sharepoint. In my experience, the Office 365 apps are worse at opening files from Sharepoint than previous versions. Once you actually manage to get the file open & checked out in the app it is fine, and will check in the file when you are done and ask you if you want to check in changes if you try to close it without doing so. But before you get there, it can fail to find the file, fail to open the file, fail to check out the file, fail to realize you are the one who has it checked out if you try to check it out first in Sharepoint and then open it ("<filename> is locked for editing by <my domain\my user>" after just entering that name along with the password to open the file), etc.

Bonus :wtf:: There's no way to browse into Sharepoint from an already open Office app and find a file, even if you paste a URL into the file dialog, even though the apps clearly know how to communicate with Sharepoint. Sorta.

  • @devjoe Yes, I ran into all of that garbage last night when I tried setting up Teams, and tried to get Word to use the Team site as a data store.

Teams is actually pretty cool. Too bad it doesn't do the obvious thing.

Also, it's frustrating that uploading to Teams requires that I make all my own subdirectories. If I upload a folder, it recursively dumps all the files out into the Teams folder I'm in.
