For almost a decade now, Mozilla has been getting paid hundreds of millions of dollars a year to put a search bar in its browser, apparently because people are too stupid to bookmark Google (or Bing or whatever).

find the bookmark and activate it
wait the search page to display
type the desired search

Well, it sort of was a thing, IE had some very rudimentary support for it in a AOL-keywords-like fashion, but it didn't really become a Thing until Chrome introduced the 'omnibox' in 2009.

With version 8.5 (released in 2005) the advertisements were removed entirely and primary financial support for the browser came through revenue from Google (which is by contract Opera's default search engine)

before search in the address bar there was address widget plus the searchbox widget (FF still has it today)

Opera had both, strangely enough - there was the usual search box, and then there was the g something in the address bar, which Chrome I think has today.

That’s why you just set google.com as your start page back then. Oddly, search is now integrated into the address bar (in most common browsers anyway) but I doubt many people then use the browser’s start page functionality for anything else — or at all anymore.

@Gurth I've seen people set up start page to cnn.com, yahoo.com, and weather portal. All three just this month.

Not to mention people who set up Google as start page in Chrome.

By default, you have a built-in start page that consists of Google search bar and 8 thumbnails (or whatever they're called now) of frequently visited pages. Some people insist on replacing it with www.google.com.
