Can't translate wikipedia? Or is this just my browser?

  • Using http://translate.google.com/translate_t# to translate http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Droit_%C3%A0_l%27image gives me a very odd result. It seems to go into recursion, but stops about 8 steps through.

Can anyone else confirm? I didn't post a screenshot, as it's not visually stunning.

And if you can speak french (since I'm just a poor American slob), can you translate this to english for me? "Droit à l'image" I don't grok "right to the image" or "Image rights". Are they asking my permission to be in a photo?

I confirm that it looks very nice in Safari's activity window.

Yes, it means that publishing your photo without your approval is forbidden.

  • It's an article about the rights of the person(s) in a picture. It says something to the effect that if you should publish a picture somewhere you need permission from everyone who is in the picture.
They're not asking you permission to be in a photo but you have to ask permission from the ones who are already in the photo (if you publish it).

It's 14 years since high school so my french might be a bit rusty.

That was what I figured from the translation, so I said "Oui" but the program is in English, it would be nice if the followup registrations were in English as well. And my HS language was German (figured it might be better for the tech fields than French) so it's all ... Greek* ... to me.

    *ok, bad pun, very un-literal.

Ok, well then here's an image since yours is much more visually stunning than mine.

My parents were survivalists who were convinced the World Government was going to enslave us all to work in the salt mines, so I was forced to learn Esperanto.  They figured it would give me a leg up on my peers and permit me a job as Mine Foreman and all the attendant perks such as a husky, fertile wife and extra rations.

  •  Quick question, OP: couldn't you just copy-and-paste the text into the translator?

    a) that's what I resorted to, but it's easiest when the organisers who put everything else in English keep up the rythm, b) it's nicer to see the whole page in English, rather than translating every phrase I don't grok, and c) what is your english interpretation of this phrase "Droit à l'image" without being a native speaker?

If you didn't know English, and were given "In a New York Minute" what would you think that meant? Translators can't always give the most correct response...

And to think I always thought Pig Latin was the enslavement language... At least we don't have doublespeak yet.

I'd think someone was posting lyrics to the Don Henley song "New York Minute."

I'm a native English speaker and I still don't know what that means. I'm guessing, a long time?

It means a very brief time; an instant.  It's a play on New York's reputation for being fast-paced.

Hence my problem with the translation of a phrase from a language I don't grok. But then again, I thought that was a fairly common idiom.

I still look forward to one day retiring to a little housing complex on Major Body of Water #17.  The Mandatory Blackouts will make the sunset so very lovely and will bolster my love of Earth Government.

What a coincedence!  I'm hoping to be transferred to the nearby Reeducation Facility 7G after a few years of obedient labor in the Dissident Camps.  Perhaps you could visit on Day of Reverential Praise for Planetary Leader.  As every year, we will be performing the morality play Follies of the Inferior Peoples.  I'm playing Onion Harvester Who Fails to Heed Wisdom of Foreman and Receives the Whip.  Since it's a play, we won't use a real cat o' nine tails.  It will have seven tails, perhaps eight if I have failed to keep my sleeping pit free of spider webs.  Hope to see you there!

As a future leader of the Terran Empire, I am pleased to inform you both that these inefficient means of subjugation will not be employed under our rule. Life will not differ very much from usual, at least for the stable first world nations - second and third world residents will be forced to give up their petty regional disputes and refocus their efforts (or die). We have plans for solving all the world's major issues peacefully and with minimal cooperation - all we ask is that you allow us to streamline and unify government.

  • I'm planning to fetch the Victory Rifle in the Sniper Shack; but at the very least go round south on Megaton to grab the sniper rifle from the stone, because me likey snipey.
