I could never figure out when it kicks in though.
From the Subaru manual:
On an uphill grade, when the clutch pedal is depressed while the brake pedal is also depressed, braking power is maintained temporarily by the Hill start assist system when the brake pedal is released.
Probably something like that.

He knew this was going to be a political/legal fight and that there would be word magic involved -- or should have known, in my opinion.
You're fined because you're not an Oregon licensed lawyer, and you're giving legal advice.
-
@TimeBandit Obviously, but how steep must the slope be before the system kicks in? I know Nissan's system won't do it on the flat or on a very mild slope, and there's no dashboard indicator until you come off the brake to pull away.
-
@RaceProUK Why should I care ?
I still clutch like if that system didn't exist. It's an "assist" system, not a replacement for a proper driver
-
@TimeBandit To be fair, I've spent over a decade driving cars with physical levers as handbrakes. If I drove one with an electronic brake long enough, I'd adapt, but four days isn't really long enough, especially when you don't have to do that many hill starts anyway.
-
@RaceProUK I don't use the handbrake to do hill starts, I just clutch fast enough.
But electronic handbrake is aA handbrake is the only thing that will help you stop if you have an hydraulic brake system failure. Give me a physical lever please !
Also, drifting in the snow

@abarker said in Want to challenge traffic light timings? Better get an engineering license:
If you've got your foot on the brake pedal anyway, engaging the handbrake isn't going to help at all.
But if you're rear-ended, your foot could come off the pedal, leaving you with braking on zero wheels as opposed to the handbrake's two.
Here's a study about the kinematics of being rear ended. They only had a study group of 6, but the consistency of the group was pretty remarkable. I only look at the preview, but that was enough to see that in a rear end collision, the driver in the front vehicle exerts no pressure on the brake pedal for an average 114 ms when they are unaware of the impending collision. So one tenth of a second when you are rear-ended unexpectedly. However, in every case where the driver is expecting the collision (they notice it coming somehow), the pressure on the brake pedal never reached 0 in any of the tests.
That's enough to indicate that in a low speed rear-end, your car isn't going to move very far simply because of the minimal time your foot is off the brake. In a high speed rear end, it wouldn't matter anyway as the impact will impart enough force to overcome the static friction between your wheels and the road, causing your vehicle to skid. If you hit that middle ground, you're probably screwed anyway since many vehicles have drum brakes in the rear, which aren't doing to do shit on their own to keep you from moving in the event of a collision.

@abarker said in Want to challenge traffic light timings? Better get an engineering license:
since many vehicles have drum brakes in the rear
That's the Real™
Disc brakes are so much better.
-
@abarker I'll read it later (on mobile), but I will say that a lot of what I know is from when I learnt to drive, and instructors err on the side of caution

Seen on the back of a semi-trailer:
Caution: this trailer is equipped with disc brakes and takes about 40% less breaking distance.
Why is semi-trailers equipped with drums still legal ?
-
@Unperverted-Vixen said in Want to challenge traffic light timings? Better get an engineering license:
Only if it's a 1-for-1 trade. It seems to me like you're going to get a greater increase in rear-end collisions than you get a decrease in T-bone collisions, though.
Exactly. We'd need to see actual numbers to make a judgement about whether it's a good trade.
@TimeBandit said in Want to challenge traffic light timings? Better get an engineering license:
Subaru fixed that a while ago
So did Ford (of all people). The Mustang I recently traded in for a Forester also had hill start assist.
-
@RaceProUK said in Want to challenge traffic light timings? Better get an engineering license:
The advice may be different in the US, but in the UK, learners are advised to apply the handbrake when waiting in a queue for a significant length of time (also for hill starts).
It's much more useful with a manual gear shift than with an automatic. It's utterly vital when you're doing a hill start in a manual, as you need to balance braking, gas and clutch control at the same time, and you've (probably) not got three feet…
Or at least if you do, O hedgehog, only two of them are down in the footwell. ;)
-
@TimeBandit said in Want to challenge traffic light timings? Better get an engineering license:
I don't use the handbrake to do hill starts, I just clutch fast enough.
That depends on how steep the hill is. We've got some that are about a 25% grade round here; they really require doing everything exactly right, and no, you can't move your feet that fast, given that rolling back into the car behind you is a very undesirable outcome.
-
@TimeBandit said in Want to challenge traffic light timings? Better get an engineering license:
Why is semi-trailers equipped with drums still legal ?
Because changing that costs money and truck operators are cheap ass gits who prefer to lobby for exemptions. OTOH, that doesn't mean that it should be legal to sell new ones with drums; at the very least, there ought to be replacement by simple attrition…

Yeah, at that grade I would be glad my Subaru's hill start assist would help me.

I reckon that's not really the case anymore for any decent car made this century. I don't know about the US, but you guys don't make any decent cars so the statement is probably still accurate .

Here's a study about the kinematics of being rear ended.
Later than intended, I've now read what I can access, and the only issue I have with the study is the tiny sample size. Still, while I wouldn't consider it conclusive, I do consider it indicative, which is good enough for this discussion
-
Last month, Järlström sued the engineering board for violating his First Amendment rights, and Tuesday a federal judge gave Järlström the temporary right to call himself an engineer, pending the results of his case.
Not a happy ending, but a reprieve, at least.
-
@cabrito said in Want to challenge traffic light timings? Better get an engineering license:
Also, a technical witness probably should be required to be an "Oregon registered engineer" in the matter at discussion.
So if there's a lawsuit in Oregon over a product manufactured in another State, it should be impossible to call the guy who designed the product as an expert witness? That's retarded.
"I'd like to call the guy who designed this Ford braking caliper to the stand, but I can't because he did the work in California and this State is retarded."

Do you Europeople fudge your hybrids to pretend to be manual transmissions? Or are you just burning tons of diesel you don't need to be by not buying hybrids at all?
Fact is: modern efficient cars are automatics. Deal with it.

Oh, they also shift much faster than any human, they scale more easily to having eight or ten gears so the engine can always be near minimum BSFC or peak torque, they don't "miss" shifts in 1/4 mile racing, they can be preloaded so a hard launch is easier on the drivetrain than dropping the clutch...

Canada is not part of Europe, learn some geography.

Oh, there can definitely be moments of excitement while driving. Thing is, those are the moments you really, really want to avoid, as they tend to be strongly correlated with visits to the hospital or the morgue. And automatic transmission helps with that--one less thing to take your hands off the wheel and your attention off the road.

@masonwheeler Spoken like someone who's never taken a car with a good chassis for a vigorous drive down a twisting country road :P
