I can't tell if you are being serious or not, that page (while dated) is far easier to read than the plague that is the flat UI we have currently.

@Dragoon I hear sentiments like that often on these forums, but I have no idea what everyone is getting on about. Do you have an example of a modern weboage that is hard to read?

Even then, readability is not the only criteria. You sound like my dad when he talks about cars from the 70's being easy to work on.

dunno. what is a weboage? is that some new sex move?

Yeah, but the difficulty to work on the new cars is intentional.

You can design a car with similar features and not make it take all day to reach something in the hood.

  • Grade A Premium Asshole

@xaade that has less to do with the way it was designed and has more to do with the design decision to cram everything they could on one single page and giving their visitors ADD.

  • Grade A Premium Asshole

@xaade said in Dumb things being crowdfunded.:

Yeah, but the difficulty to work on the new cars is intentional.

No it isn't. We want lots of interior room and we also want smaller cars that do not feel like boats and we want them as cheaply as possible. You can only increase the cabin space and decrease the overall size of the car (and therefore the raw materials used in them) by cramming shit together more tightly.

Also, due to wanting things more cheaply, they have started modularizing the assemblies so they load the complete drivetrain from below in to a very cramped engine compartment that maximizes interior legroom.

Couple that with everything in the car being computerized for emissions and fuel mileage and everything else and they can be difficult to work on.

But that is only if "ease of access for working on the car" is your only criteria. Cars from the 70's were completely shot at 100K miles. The engines were worn out, the suspension was shot and they were rusting in two by that point. The entire car needed an overhaul. And to get to that 100K miles you had to repack the wheel bearings once every year or two, and constantly fiddle with the carburetor and timing and points and, and, and...

My daily driver is 14 years old, has almost 200K miles on it at this point and it would not bother me to drive it across the USA as it is still dead reliable.

  • @Polygeekery said in Dumb things being crowdfunded.:

    No it isn't.

They have cars with computers designed so that independent mechanics can't work on them, and you have to take them to the dealer for certain jobs.

Yes, it is intentional. It may not be the only reason, but it definitely contributes.

Like what jobs? I have yet to run in to that.

John Deere machinery, yes. Cars, I have yet to see it. I am not saying that it is not true, I would just like to read about examples before I get righteously outraged.

  • @Polygeekery said in Dumb things being crowdfunded.:

Like what jobs? I have yet to run in to that.

I remember there being something with my car... and the mechanic said I had to take it to the dealer.

I remember for certain that independent mechanics can't reset the "needs service" notification.

This was two different things though.

If I remember exactly what it was, I'll add it.

@xaade said in Dumb things being crowdfunded.:

Not that I have ever run in to. OBD scanners can reset them. You can on all of our vehicles. I know this for certain because I think we got some bad gas at our neighborhood gas station because all of our pre-cat O2 sensors went out in the span of a month and I had to replace them and then reset the trouble codes. My $40 OBD scanner did it no problem.

  • @xaade said in Dumb things being crowdfunded.:

Like headlights? But then how can mechanics charge $100+ to change one bulb?
(I had to (almost) remove the battery to change one. I was able to shift it enough that removal wasn't necessary)

  • @Polygeekery said in Dumb things being crowdfunded.:

I probably had a crappy mechanic then.

I used to buy these frozen Banquet Chicken Finger Meals all the time, but they recently discontinued them. It is too bad, they were really great with a bit of Texas Peat hot sauce. The real kicker for me is it was exactly the right amount of food. These usually didn't leave me feeling too full or wanting more.

Whatever they put in the brownie would give me just enough of a boost to get me going in the morning. Since that was frozen, I didn't
have to worry about a baked good sitting around tempting me, drying out, quickly reaching an expiration date, or attracting bugs. I think some consumers may have been confused because the brownie was more cake-like rather than gooey. But I happen to prefer my brownies well-done. And there was the pure convenience of just plopping one of these in the microwave in the morning without having to worry about a thing more.

Can't say the allegedly chicken was really super, but it was food. The new (smaller, more snack-sized) versions prominently advertise they are made with "100% chicken breast meat", which I assume means they found a legal loophole that lets them redefine the term "100% chicken breast meat" to mean puraided artificially shaped and textured mutant chicken anus. :P

Well done brownies? The man's a maniac!

  • @xaade said in Toasty!:

Yeah, but the difficulty to work on the new cars is intentional.

That's not true for two reasons:

    1. Modern car features take more space (especially in hybrid cars, where you have basically two entirely different fuel systems and powerplants.)

    2. Modern aerodynamic design makes less space available.

Think about the concept of crumple zones. Safe and efficient cars have crumple zones and hybrid powerplants. Despite weighing more and being more complex, they're an order of magnitude safer than older cars and several times more efficient with practically zero trade-off. They're also several times more reliable-- pretty much any car off the lot will go 100k miles with zero maintenance. (Not counting stuff like oil changes, or buying new tires or refilling that little windshield squirty fluid stuff.)

So while it's true that modern cars are less repair-able, it's entirely false that their lack of repairability gives no benefits.

Where the incentives are different, the results are different. Look at jet airliners. They're also very complex machines, but most of the stuff in them is extremely reliable and doesn't require much inspection, except the engines. The airline industry solves this by putting this engines on little pylons, so they're easily inspectable and removeable and replaceable. (There are also aerodynamic benefits, for example, the engine intakes get "clean air" that hasn't been buffeted by hitting the plane's skin first.)

I don't think a car would work as well with its engines in pods or nacelles.
