Prevously, on :
Matherfoocking Wondows 10:And now, Episode 4.
Finally got Wondows 10 to recognize the external drives.
And they're completely fucked.Recover 4TB of
furry pornimportant files from backups.Wipe and re-install Wondows 10 Crater' Pupdate.
Everything works fine.Do stuff. Go to bed. Leave computer running overnight.
Wake up in the morning and surprise, surprise, can't
access external drives. But this time, once I get things
working again, only one of the drives is fucked, so I
only have to recover half as much data from backups.Oh well, it was a fun experiment. Back on Windows 7,
apparently for a long time to come. Microsoft can go
fuck themselves.

@El_Heffe What makes you think the OS version has anything to do with your failing-ass drives?
-
Funny how I use this all the time and never run into these problems that don't really exist.
-
@blakeyrat modern computer systems - both software and hardware and everything inbetween - are too complex for any single human being to comprehend in whole, and that means pinpointing the exact reason of many issues next to impossible. OS is just as likely to be the source if @El_Heffe's suffering as the drive itself.
-
@Gąska By that logic, you could also blame doing the cha-cha on Easter Sunday.

Huh. Does chacha even exist still?
Ha. Nope.

Either that or I've wasted a lot of time getting my MCITPEA/MCSE/MCSA etc for literally no reason.
Why not both?

All hardware is exactly the same, the only difference is changing the OS.
Leave computer running overnight (which I do all the time).
Number of times drives were corrupted and inaccessible the next morning:
Windows 10 - twice in two days
Windows 7 - neverIt could possibly be aliens, or fairies or cosmic rays from a neutron star in the Andromeda galaxy. But I'm ruling those out due to all the other half-assed bullshit in Windows 10.

You can have written your new OS over bad disk clusters and corrupted it. Did it get better on a windows 7 reinstall?

The corrupted drives (in this case) are external hard drives. The drive where Windows 10 is actually installed is fine. Never had a problem in that regard.
However, all my other drives (3 internal, 2 external) have become corrupted at various times when running Win10 vs Never in 7+ years of running Windows 7. This has been consistent behavior since the first release of Win10 in 2015.
Went back to Windows 7 two days ago. Woke up this morning to my external drives working just fine for the second day in a row.
Could be the fault of the Loch Ness Monster, or maybe one of the moons of Neptune is slightly out of alignment. But I'm still leaning toward Win10 is half-assed shit.
-
@El_Heffe, when you say corrupted... are they appearing to be just raw partitions? As in, the partition table itself seems to have kept the partition size/offset data, but everything else is buggered?
Not that I have a solution, but I wonder if it's the same thing that fscked up that dual-boot laptop I complained about. It's been fine since though, in my case it was the installer that broke things and now it seems fine.
Other than the thing refusing to wake up at times since the update. But that's another kettle of
fishhawks.
-
@Onyx there was actually a bug in many insider previews where external drives would appear corrupted but actually weren't corrupted at all and Windows 10 had just dropped Velma's glasses. I wonder if it's related.
-
@LB_ Well, in my case it didn't appear so to Windows alone: both grub and gparted (running from a live USB) were pretty much onboard with that idea. Might be a thing that's bothering @El_Heffe though.

Yeah, pretty much like all the issues I see people complaining about with Linux that I never run into that don't really exist.
