Wondows 10 Craters' Pupdate

@anonymous234 Doing it before update seems... unproductive. And since it doesn't boot afterwards...
Dunno, I'm just not excited for Paint 3D enough to take such drastic steps... Good info though.

Once again, I'm so glad in Windows you never need the command line. There's always a GUI for everything.
Not like that crappy open source OS
Toby Faire it isn't a utility that a normal user should ever be touching. The official line for a problem like this would probably be pay MS support to fix it or use the nice graphical Windows 10 reset thingy.

Hokay, update, ran those commands...
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool Version: 10.0.14393.0 Image Version: 10.0.14393.0 [==========================100.0%==========================] The restore operation completed successfully. The operation completed successfully. PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> sfc /scannow Beginning system scan. This process will take some time. Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 100% complete. Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. PS C:\WINDOWS\system32>
So yeah, don't think it did much. Poking through my device manager revealed a bunch of VMWare NICs, and I did find some claims of VMWare Player causing problems now. Well, don't need it anymore, uninstalled, fingers crossed...

!Arse, I was hoping that would do it. That error does seem to relate to the windows update and logs folder though.
An accepted answer on Superuser says:
a) Press Windows key + R
b) Type: %windir%\system32\cleanmgr.exe
c) Hit Enter on your keyboardMaybe that will help...

Yes, that never breaks.
On Debian stable, no.
Ubuntu on the other hand...

Aaanyway, cleaned stuff up, the installation in Windows passed and... Same shit after reboot.
I give up, I'll let it install stuff over time, maybe it decides to work at some point.

muscle memory? before 8 you needed the R to get the run dialog.
-
The start menu quick launch (whatever it's called) has been there since Vista and 99% of the time it's more useful than the Run dialog.
-
@hungrier Yeah. If you type the name of an executable in the path, it will run it, so it works as a command line. But this feature is kind of hidden, so I guess a lot of people don't know it, whereas "Run command" is more explicit.

You mean the one that likes to show you a program on your computer and then switch to a Bing search for some unrelated thing after you push enter?

@LB_ said in Wondows 10 Craters' Pupdate:
@Atazhaia is there maybe some kind of low-level software that just abstracts the boot drive from Windows so it can't see (and screw with) partitions it didn't create? A full-on VM sounds like a hefty price to pay for just hiding some partitions. Maybe some layer between UEFI and Windows? (I know very little about this subject...)
There used to be ways that HID partitions, but they don't work in modern operating systems since they were Interrupt 19 based.

@Tsaukpaetra The touch keyboard is buried behind a menu when you're logging in.

Oh, you mean the on-screen-keyboard. Yeah, it's basically the same thing, but you said touch and that's Different.

I also hate how searching for "update" will first show the Windows 10 Updates icon as first result, then suddenly replace it with "Check for Java updates" from installed programs just before I click. Damn clickbait!

Just on the work laptop.
I'd probably get flagged for a policy violation for not having the latest java installed.

Actually I think the policy violation checking tool requires java (What's a windows domain?). And I'd definitely get flagged for not running that.

Clean install of Wondows 10 Craters' Pupdate
Install Program A and Program B. The two most important applications I use.Program A installs and runs fine.
Program B won't install. Says an error occurred but won't tell me what the error is. Contacted vendor, their helpful answer is "you probably have a virus". Uh . . no. Not unless Microsoft is distributing virus-infected ISOs from their website. (possible but unlikely)Wipe drive, re-install Wondows.
Program A installs but won't run. Throws an error. Sent screenshot of error to vendor. Still no reply.

Nice!
Well, not nice that you'll force reboots, but nice that it's more likely for me to notice that you're going to do so without my permission.
-
I'm glad MS is so forward-thinking...
-
Status: I heard there was a cumulative update that would be applied literally as soon as you finished booting the first time.
... Huh.
Well, maybe it's WSUS being dumb...
Nope, looks like WSUS says I need 3 (THREE) updates, in fact.
...
So.....
WTF Windows Update?!!?!
My computer is apparently the only one that still needs these updates:
So... I guess I'll wait a day for it to realize it really really needs them?
-
@Cursorkeys said in Wondows 10 Craters' Pupdate:

Wait, that actually worked for someone?
I've probably had that suggested about a dozen times when I've had issues, and it has never helped me.

I think it actually ignores invalid values, as my laptop certainly doesn't freeze up when I unplug it.
Spot testing looks like the minimum my CPU can clock at is apparently 770 MHz (supposedly).
Re-visiting the dialog box though reveals that Windows "Corrected" the value to 600 MHz.
-
Edit: BTW The shortcut to invoke this is apparently Alt-J (for upvote?) and Alt-K

Go to bed, leave computer on as I usually do. Wake up next morning, cannot access external hard drives. Wondows cannot find anything connected to my USB 3.0 ports, despite working fine a few hours earlier.

And plugged in. A 1.3 PHz processor must generate quite a bit of heat.
-
@anonymous234 That's only the maximum frequency, though. I imagine most of the time it would be throttled down to something much lower, a few THz maybe.
-
Thanks to all the people who "beta tested" this update!
Looks like the upgrade on my desktop PC went well. No missing Linux bootloader, disappeared drives or messed up drivers....
So far the only complaint is that the update reactivated Fast startup which is a no-no for my audio drivers and dual booting.
-
Got the Creators' Update on our main machine. Seems OK except that it keeps giving me a message saying it's removed Daemon Tools because it's not compatible with Windows 10.
The first time that came up I tried the "more info" link only to be told that the page didn't exist. So I went and got the latest version of DT, which said it supported Win10, and installed that. Windows still keeps telling me that it's removed it because it's not compatible (but at least the "more info" page is working now, not that it says anything useful).
On the other hand, I've seen the app window pop up once or twice, so I don't really know if it's actually installed and/or working. I don't use it very often, so I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
-
@Scarlet_Manuka does Daemon Tools do anything that Win10 can't do natively any more? I'm sure you can mount ISOs without a third party tool now
-

Can Windows load raw image files (i.e. Audio disks)?
There's not much point nowadays, but older stuff definitely needs that...

It can mount a bunch of file formats that Windows 10 doesn't support (using the extra data from those image types where useful). It also emulates some forms of copy protection.
@Tsaukpaetra said in Wondows 10 Craters' Pupdate:

Windows (Vista and up?) can mount some types of image files, including .ISO, .IMG, and .VHD/.VHDX.
FWIW, I use Alcohol 120% (main machine) and 52% (others, if necessary) mostly because I've had a license for 120% for forever. While Steam and GOG have replaced most of its usefulness for backing up games and playing them without their CDs in the drive, I've been using it lately to make disc images for DVDs with many options and secrets hidden in the menus. (It'd be nicer as a pile of video files with alternate audio tracks and whatnot, but I don't know squat about making those while the disc image involves putting in the DVD and pressing a button.)

@Parody said in Wondows 10 Craters' Pupdate:

DVD decryptor used to be perfect for that, since all a DVD is is mp2 videos with playlists.
