Anyone use this? Is it any good?
-
Powered by Bing
I'll let you decide
-
Ecosia
-
It offers to install an addon rather than a search engine? (not a big WTF per se, but)
-
As far as I could see after a cursory glance of your addon's source code, all it does (for now anyway) is track when the addon was installed, add ecosia as a search engine, and this:
var FUNNEL_HIDE = '.addon-hide', FUNNEL_SHOW = '.addon-show'; function updateSearchSite() { // Hide elements only meant for new users. $(FUNNEL_HIDE).hide(); // Show elements meant for extension users. $(FUNNEL_SHOW).show(); } $(updateSearchSite);
On your site I see nothing with class
addon-show
and the only thing withaddon-hide
is the button to install the addon. I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt and say there eventually will be more stuff (eg a funnel) to justify this.- I don't know what stupid shit you're doing with the keypress events, but I can't use keyboard shortcuts while on your results page. THIS IS AN INSTANT SHOWSTOPPER AND A REASON TO POLITELY ASK YOU TO DIAFF.
Firefox?
(disregard tiny font. It's this system's font size)-
Different definition of "prevented from asking" from mine.
-
No way to check what software it's asking to install.
-
If I click "Allow" I get another prompt:
-
So it did prevent the site from asking to install something after all. And the something was a browser addon, not "software" as one would think (ie, an independent executable). The first prompt was redundant, unless they expect me to repeatedly visit a website that keeps offering me to install "software".
-
Now, it seems this new prompt gives me a link to find out more about the addon I'm installing, but that link just points to a generic page: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/find-and-install-add-ons-add-features-to-firefox?as=u&utm_source=inproduct
-
I've reached the addon's AMO page via the "Learn More." link on the website, not the "Learn more..." link on the Firefox prompt, thank you very much. Now, where's the button that lets me download the XPI so I can open it and see what it does? Or the link to see its source online? WHERE IS IT?
Note: I can right-click the Install button on the web page and choose "Save link", so I guess there's that.

They work, but only after I type one or more characters, which will be entered on the search input regardless of whether it is currently focused or not.
Don't mess with my keyboard shortcuts.

If I don't put additional load on their servers, they will have more money left for the trees

Ecosia-ing "purple dildo 486 thedailywtf" gives me lots of lewd results.
Googling it gives me the "yet another sleep thread" which is what I was actually trying to find.
-
Fuck, this seems to give Yahoo results.
(I just used the "purple dildo 486 thedailywtf" on some other search engines and compared)

Message to Google, and DDG as well:
Don't mess with my keyboard shortcuts.
I use my arrow keys for scrolling, not picking links.
Fake edit: I actually mostly use the mouse on page results, because I middle-click links anyway, so meh.

From Wikipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeedia:
On July 29, 2009, Microsoft and Yahoo! announced a deal in which Bing would henceforth power Yahoo! Search.
