PSA: MS Word is broken

@RaceProUK LibreOffice not affected
-
@TimeBandit both users will be relieved to hear that
-
@Jaloopa You're confusing Windows Phone market shares with LibreOffice

MS Word
Is this some sort of TeX package?
-
@bb36e nah, man, it'd have to be named something meaningful, memorable, and pronounceable like UlIbSpFrFxTtT31s18. (case sensitive)

I kind of was, actually.

man, that takes me back..... i remember laughing my ass off causing problems for the sheeple i knew by just texting them that at the most "random" times.

@accalia I don't recall- Oh, is that a text string that crashed iPhones or something?

That's the one. And they couldn't do anything about it, because all it took to crash their phone was receiving a text.

well, they could change the settings so iMessage wouldn't do push notifications anymore.
but that had some distinct negative sideeffects.

It's Microsoft's implementation of OLE that's badly broken.
-
so that's why suddenly every spam mail was attaching a word file?
good thing i don't use word

-
Great. Now if only I didn't have to give a Word document permission to pwn my system before it'll allow me to
FUCKING
PRINT IT.
-
@anotherusername
I have the impression office 2016 has resolved this. At least I haven't been enabling documents just to print anymore.
-
@anotherusername Speaking of stupid printing things... I just wanted to generate a PDF from a report in Access (think that was Access2007). Nope. Not unless you have a default printer set. It just refuses. (Seems the w10-pupdate lost my default [stupid-thing2]) It yells 'you don't have any printers installed'!!! In small print, 'or a default set'. Wankers.

Yes.
It works well for a dog club's membership database...

You're probably close to the limit of it

We're a small club. So we still have a little growth space!

Well... are you using 32 or 64-bit?

32, of course. 64bit Office likes to display "big scary warnings" about compatibility. Fuck that. I'll just stay stuck in the safe past!

Oh. Well you can add .53 🐕.
If it was 64 bit, you could add a m🐕, or at least 800 or so k🐕.

Well, Word may be broken, but you can just use PowerPoint. It's been proven

I am trwtf, but I actually use PowerPoint for graphics editing.
It's actually pretty good at doing simple SVG stuff with text, without having to learn all 100e21 menus in Gimp or paying/pirating Photoshop

For small values of "edit" …

Nah, I do some pretty intense stuff.
Eats ram like crazy though - something in their graphics system is not well optimized.

You could port TeX to it and use TikZ now :p

But why though...

@sloosecannon
Are you serious? The fact that you can should be reason enough for any serious computer scientist. Think of the great (and completely useless) papers you could write!This would be the best thing since that x86 emulator in JavaScript.
-
I'm honestly half surprised that Office hasn't been re-written in a managed language by now, though there are a lot of legacy links in the chain that would have to be carefully coddled (see also: OLE, as @El_Heffe points out, though that presentation is two years old). As always, I'm sure it's a battle between the developers excited about "This Is The New Shit" and project managers.
The day Windows is re-written in a managed language is the day I retire from the industry.

They tried. But we're talking about a company that still carries Win95 era Notepad from release to release, mostly unchanged.

You want Inkscape, maybe Dia. Or, you know, any other actual SVG editor.
Focusing more on graphics, is Paint.net not appropriate for your use cases?

Eh, every SVG editor has annoyances about it... I don't really spend enough time to actually invest time in learning a tool, so I'm just using the one I know
Paint.net is pretty good, but I don't like some things about it...
Obviously I'm , and I'm definitely trwtf, but... hey, it works :)

Thanks for reminding me that I have to do that annual task that involves a bunch of Access, which is made far more complicated than necessary by the fact that we really can't fit all the data in at once, so we have to load it in bits and pieces and do stuff with it.
