  • For those for whom this will extend beyond theright end of the div, it seems RealPlayer has decided to create a file that is over 1/2 TB in size.  Click the image to get it full screen in a new window (or tab).

I did a bit of googling, and apparently this isn't a horribly uncommon problem.  Some people had trouble deleting the file, but I had no trouble.  The big shocker: It was too big for the Recycle Bin.

  • If you like it you should also try Adobe Acrobat... it has some bugs where the quick search system starts to cache the text from the PDF file in a temporary file and keeps caching and caching the same PDF file over and over, even when that temporary file goes over 4 GB. I've had to disable that function to fix the problem.

  • Vista and Realplayer. That's TRWTF².

  • Big WTF: It's in the roaming profile, so if you use roaming it would be synchronized to the server as well.

The network's latency wouldn't allow it to grow to that size, it could still get into the GB range, but I doubt it'd hit 10GB.

The real WTF is that you didn't collapse your column sizes and window sizes for this screenshot. There's an entire Explorer window's worth of height that you've wasted (only one row is relevant, in addition to the breadcrumbs path at the top of the window), and the majority of its width (only the name and size are needed, and name is much too wide). You're so bad at taking screenshots. Are you the kind of person who sends an entire desktop screengrab for one little dialogue window? I hate people like you. Learn to not be so damned wasteful. Think of all the pixeltrees that had to be chopped down to make an image ten times larger than it needed to be. You monster.

What have I done?  How can I atone?

There is only one thing you can do...

You can't. You have cancer now. D:

  • So, BTK,

Why The Fuck you're still using Real Player?

What? Roaming profiles are not used from the server, they're synchronised between the domain controller and client machine at every logoff and logon.

That said though, the profile being that size would actually prevent synchronisation - the domain controller would abort the sync after about 500MB and refuse to allow the client to roam the profile until the issue is resolved.

I laughed hard at this. The reason? Because I carefully pare down screenshots to only the relevant bits, but when I'm posting it on the (physical) wall of shame or something, I'll intentionally print the whole screen

  • "Why do I still use this program" should be "Why do I still use this operating system".

Vista is so ugly and messy it hurts...

Now, Vista is very pretty and stuff like that (really, it's lovely), but skinned shit has a tendency to get on my nerves after a few weeks, so I went back to classic shell and am much happer. You hardly notice it's Vista, even.

    Now Belgarion,

What I do want to know is what RealPlayer is doing on your computer, because it's been wholly obsolete for about a decade. Or two.

I didn't want to answer anybody else, but I'll answer you.

It's just kind of habit when I set up a computer to install it.  I know there are alternatives, but I just don't feel like exploring them.  I have VLC installed, but IIRC it has some issue with synching the video to the audio, which RP does not have.  I never had a serious problem with it until this issue on my Vista machine.

Plus, as an added bonus, it pops up this thing whenever I watch flash video (ala youtube) asking if I want to download it.  I never thought I would like this until I tried it, and I don't know of any other free product that does that, not that I've looked.

Also, it makes a better .flv player than VLC, as VLC has the same synching issue as I recall it having with .rm.

Stop installing? Stop installing where $OS >1? Take the time to see what's happening on each OS?

    There's lazy and there's.. Lazy.

I'm (naturally?) assuming you're defaulting to the lowest common denominator media player on all the platforms you support install.

    Oops. Sorry.

I don't use one media player for everything, if that's what you're asking.  I just know that eventually I'll come across a .rm file I want to play so I install realplayer.  On this install, it came with the added benefit of being able to download .flv files from youtube et al.

I'm not sure what you're getting at by this.  Could you clarify?  I didn't have a real good reason to not install RP, so I installed it.  It didn't gradually create this file, it created it all in one night, after I had the machine for a couple of months.

The fact that it's RealPlayer wasn't good enough?

  • I have MPlayer compiled against FFmpeg 0.5. I can play any valid RealVideo file in existence using entirely open source software. RealPlayer can go fuck itself.

Right, but the reason he's using realplayer is because it doesn't have the sound-sync issue vlc has, which you've failed to mention if mplayer has that issue or not.

    VLC synching issue
Use MPC with the Vista codec pack. I have yet to encounter a video file it couldn't play.

  • @belgariontheking said:

This is correct; I experience the same issue, but hardly ever.

When I do, there's a timing option in VLC where you can shift the audio track by a few ms so it all syncs up again. Though that's a bit annoying TBH, because it's hard to play that stuff by ear. No pun intended.

I guess it's okay to use RP then, but I don't know any sites that offer Real media. I mean, like, zero. Nobody uses rm anymore.

Some of the stuff I download comes in RM, like the first season of CSI.  And other things too.

  • Eh, forget about the file size - I like how for some reason the UI folks decided to draw the folder icons vertical...you know, because we all put folders on their edges like that so their contents spill all over the place.

Unless maybe you work in a centrifuge or maybe a zero-g environment?

Yes, because literal adherence to the folder metaphor is what makes a good OS.

  •  :care, dear sir, :care.

Also, to stay within your argument, you put your folders on the ground, balanced on the fold? The depicted "sideways" orientation is actually the common view on a folder when it's in your hand, being used.

Unless you weren't serious, and then you need some sarcasm tags. : )

Alas, 'tis a sad day when sarcasm tags are demoted from 'optional' to 'mandatory...

That said... balancing folders on the fold is great fun, although the 'tent' configuration is a bit less stressful. You can make a nice fort using them open edge-wise though...so maybe there is some merit to showing them sideways like that.

For some reason I just had a thought: wouldn't it be great if real folders were like "computer" folders and you could store them inside each other? Sounds like a Tardis, or something from Marry Poppins.  Or maybe Dr. Farnsworth's Universe-in-a-Box.

Indeed, when thoughts such as the one you put forth may very well be serial.
