What tools do you recommend?

Apparently we have some money spend...boss asks what kind of tools should we purchase.
.NET / SQL Server, Microsoft CRM (CRM didn't cost enough already???), Azure.
We already have things like RedGate and Resharper.

TFS? For CI purposes?

We already have TFS.
What are the current automated testing tools?
I'm so old I used SQA Robot.
-
@Yamikuronue said in What tools do you recommend?:

I think you're thinking of Visual Studio Online, which has TFS in it alongside all the CI stuff. But they'll have that anyway, as with all the MS stuff they have, they almost certainly have MS Accounts associated.

I don't' know the Microsoft stack as well. Selenium for webapps; BDD stuff? TDD stuff?
-
If you have VS2017 Enterprise and feel like switching to MSTest2, you won't need this, otherwise: NCrunch is invaluable.
-

I'm not as familiar as I should be with those, but I know there's stuff like NUnit, which you can probably guess from the name bears a lot of resemblance to JUnit. More recent versions of VS also have their own TDD suite built-in, imaginatively called the Visual Studio Unit Testing Framework. Those two are probably the best place to start.

We have probably 2 dozen developers and a single manual tester.
I'm just trying to get them to test at all at this point. We have so many edge cases with business rules that fixing one things often breaks another.

@thegoryone said in What tools do you recommend?:
@Karla Microsoft Dynamics? Jesus christ, slow down there Satan.
Yeah, I hate it.
Definitely pick up NUnit but I think it's Open Source anyways isn't it? Visual Studio is only very rarely part of my job.
We have money to spend, I am looking for paid tools.
Must use budget or get less money next year.
-
@thegoryone said in What tools do you recommend?:
@Karla Do what my boss did at Christmas. Alienware!
I'm pretty sure she meant software and hardware is a different budgetary item.
-
@thegoryone said in What tools do you recommend?:
@Karla That's why we invented the term "Creative accounting"
I work for government. That is above my paygrade.

@Karla Testing may actually be easier to explain with NCrunch or the new built-in continuous testing tool: the live feedback is incredibly compelling, even from watching a demo. Being able to see minor bugs as you write them saves an enormous amount of time.

That looks interesting. I will suggest it.
-
@Karla But again, if you write your tests in MSTest2, VS2017 Enterprise has it built in. So if you have that, I would suggest not buying NCrunch.
-
The only tools I'd shell some money for are NCrunch and BeyondCompare.
Other than that, I recommend some hookers and blow.
-
Web? http://CrossBrowserTesting.com can be used manually or with Selenium to test on all sorts of devices

Since no tests are currently written...
VS2017 Enterprise has it built in.
Still on 2015

Tabs Studio is a good VS extension

Tabs Studio
I like that...I may get myself a personal license.
-
@Karla between VS upgrades, a new PC and asking them directly for an extended license so I could try to convince my company to buy an enterprise license, I haven't paid yet but I will have to soon.
-
@Karla Advantages of MSTest2:
- VS2017 Enterprise can test it while you type
- Pretty normal asserts and such
- Has
[RowTest]
support (Though this annoyingly will only test one row in continuous mode)
I'm not a fan of NUnit and XUnit and such, which have an odd preference for renaming all the attributes and asserts for no reason.

I meant for my home computer.
-
@Karla You mentioned redgate but this is nice:
But I dunno what your Redgate deal does for. I will probably by the individual license after the trial period just for this produce as it is pretty damn good.
-
@Karla how about CodeScene? I only read a bit about temporal coupling here http://www.adamtornhill.com/articles/aspnetclones/killtheclones.html and have no idea if the tool would be useful in practice, but if you have money to burn a review would be welcome :)
-
@lucas1 Ants can certainly be very valuable, though the rest of it is pretty uninteresting.
-
@Magus Just Decompile does what RedGate reflector already did. I also built my own tool that was a command line version of Just Decompile because I wasn't allowed to install it. It was rather crude but normally I just wanna see what the library is doing underneath when they are doc'd poorly.
-
@lucas1 And I'd probably use dotPeek if I was going for a paid tool.
-
@Magus The stuff I usually work on is either
- fixing some crap that another company ballsed up
- updating very old .NET 1.0/1.1/2.0 WebForms apps
- basic web services.
Normally I don't really need anything other than ReSharper and VS.
-
@lucas1 I rarely even bother with resharper anymore.
-
@Magus Before VS2012 it was worth it but I doubt I will bother renewing after this year.
-
-
ILSpy isn't as good as JustDecompile in my experience. JustDecompile and RedGate reflector can completely de-compile an assembly that can be recompiled. ILSpy the last time wouldn't do it quite right and I would have to grep with gvim to find where it fucked up. Admittedly it was 4 years ago.
But JustDecompile is Free so I dunno why you would bother using the open source version that isn't as good.
-
@lucas1 ILSpy for a machine I don't have admin rights on, JustDecompile on one I do ;)
-
@RaceProUK Oh I see what you are saying now. I will just complain to the project manager until JustDecompile gets installed. Not really a problem now I work from home and I am effectively freelance.

Telerik. Telerik what? Telerik errthing.

@Yamikuronue TFS has had CI since at least TFS 2010.

Stupid autocorrect.
At first I was like ... and then I figured it out.
My old boss did one time give me a sample of almond flavored tequila. I liked it. I don't like almonds...but I don't like almonds. Go figure.
